On 19.09.2018, the Bank of Greece is issuing a collector Gold Coin which is part of their Coin Series titled "Greek Mythology", the theme of which features Olympian Gods.

This new coin will depict the God Apollo, the son of Zeus and Leto and twin brother of Artemis.

Apollo is known in mythology as the God of Light, music and the Arts, as well as prophecy, healing, measure and harmony. He was born in the island of Delos, at the centre of the Cyclades, where the Delia festivals were held in his honour.

After killing the serpent Python, he founded the famous Oracle at Delphi, where the Pythian Games were held/celebrated.

Other important sanctuaries of Apollo existed in Amyclae (near Sparta), Bassae in Arcadia (Temple of Apollo Episkourios) and Didyma (Asia Minor).

Many temples are dedicated to Apollo in Greece and Greek colonies. These temples show the spread of the Cult of Apollo and the evolution of the Greek architecture, which was mostly based on the rightness of form and on mathematical relations. The most important temples are - Thebes (Greece), Eretria, Dreros (Crete), Gortyn (Crete), Thermon (West Greece), Corinth, Cyrene (Libya), Naukratis, Syracuse (Sicily), Selinus (Sicily), Delphi, Chios, Abae (Phicis), Bassae (Peloponnesus), Didyma (near Miletus), Clarus (near ancient Colophon), Hamaxitus (Troad), Veii (Etruria), Pompeii (Italy), Melite (modern mdina, Malta) etc.

Apollo was traditionally portrayed as a beardless, idealistic youth, holding a lyre and sometimes a bow. He was not without his dark side, and although his son was Asclepius, the Greek God of medicine, healing, rejuvenation and physicians,  Apollo is regarded as the God of plague and a punisher of hubris. Some of his other epithets were Phoebus, Loxias (in reference to his ambiguous Oracles) and Musagetes (leader of the Muses) and director of their choir. Hermes created the lyre for him and the instrument became a common attribute of Apollo. Hymns sung to Apollo are called "paeans".

In Hellenistic times, particularly during the 3rd century BC, as "Apollo Helios" he was identified with "Helios" - the "Titan God of the Sun". His chief epithet was "Phoebus" (literally meaning "bright")

In Tarot cards/decks, he is often associated with the Magician Card and is treated as a prankster, in conformity with his ambiguous Oracles and his advice is to be treated with circumspection by the querent.

The Reverse of the 100 Euro Gold Proof Coin depicts a classic and familiar stylised depiction of the young God Apollo seated and holding a lyre, with a quiver of arrows on his back.

He is shown wearing a laurel wreath on his head, symbolic of his royal status as the son of Zeus. The text in the upper half of the coin reads "Apollo Greek Mythology" in Greek, which is placed in the upper half of the coin in two lines.

The mint mark of the Greek State Mint is placed to the right of Apollo's face. The year of issue is just below the lyre "2018". A uniform Greek key design/pattern is engraved along the coin's periphery/border.

The Obverse of the 100 Euro Gold Proof Coin depicts a Sun motif as the central design, in the middle of which is the Enblem of Greece with the text "Hellenic Republic" in Greek, encircling the Emblem. The denomination "100 EURO" (mentioned in Greek) is placed below the sun design.

On the periphery is a uniform Greek key design/pattern on this face too.
