975) Jallianwala Bagh Massacre: Centenary Remembrance (13.04.1919-13.04.2019): A set of two stamps issued by India Post, in honour of the martyrs of the infamous incident which changed the course of India's Freedom Struggle from the British India Raj: Stamps issue date: 13.04.2019:

The circumstances leading to the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre:

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, Punjab took place in undivided India, barely a few months after World War I ended in Europe.

More than 4,00,000 soldiers Undivided Punjab had participated in the British India's colonial war effort. Nevertheless, the wartime sacrifices of Punjab were forgotten by the British India authorities and these demobilised soldiers from various fronts in Europe returned home to unemployment and starvation, as crop failures contributed to food shortages and sky-rocketing prices.

Meanwhile, the British Raj authorities grew very concerned as Indian Independence leaders called for peaceful protests against the draconian Rowlatt Act.

On 06.04.1919, a complete "hartal" ("strike") was called for by the Indian National Congress (INC).

Nevertheless, what started as a peaceful protest turned to several incidents of violence owing to unemployment and desperation among the local populace/protesters. It seems that about 20 persons were killed in the violence while crossing a railway bridge that led to the British settlement, which included four or five Europeans, including an assault on an English woman missionary who was beaten up.

The outbreak of violence shook the British authorities, and Brig. Gen. Reginald Dyer, the third officer sent to Amritsar within 48 hours was asked to take a tough stand and control the situation. At this time, the British in Amritsar were panicking  and feeling overrun and there was a great concern about the unrest and the crowds protesting against British India policies.

Two prominent Indian leaders were arrested on ground of "sedition", leading to further resentment among the protesters.

On Baisakhi Day on 13.04.2019, at Jallianwala Bagh grounds:

On 13.04.1919, a large number of persons estimated between 15,000 and 20,000 persons, including women and children had gathered at Jallianwala Bagh to celebrate the harvest festival of Baisakhi.

The mood of the gathered persons was quite sombre and less festive, as the incidents of the 10th April had led to every exit in and out of Amritsar was sealed and guarded by the British authorities and one could only leave the city after taking proper permission.

Jallianwala Bagh at that time was not really a "Bagh" (garden), ad was more in the nature of a vacant plot of land, an irregular quadrangle surrounded by houses. It was a private property owned by Sardar Himmat Singh, a noble in the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The main entrance could be accessed by a narrow passage and only at four or five points, it was possible to exit the site.

Dyer arrived at the Jallianwala Bagh with 50 soldiers, armed with .303 Lee-Enfield bolt-action rifles. Some soldiers had knives and "khukris" (daggers used by Gurkhas in combat) with them. After closing all the exit points, he ordered indiscriminate firing, which went on for about 20 minutes, which stopped only when they ran out of ammunition (1,650 bullets/rounds) in their arsenal

Dyer made no efforts to provide medical aid to the wounded, saying it was not his duty and he along with his troops left the scene of dead, dying and wounded civilians who had gathered for the Baisakhi celebrations.

An estimate puts the number of persons who died in this uncalled for firing by Dyer at around 1,000 and many more wounded. The martyrs of this dreadful and senseless act included a seven month old baby boy and an 80 year old man. At least four women died in the incident most of them middle-aged. At least 52 who were shot dead were below the age of 18 years of age. Many of the wounded died painfully, bleeding through the night crying out for water. Several others died of suffocation, buried under piles of corpses or drowned in the well.

Local hospitals under British administration orders refused to tend to the wounded and the government doctor Lt. Col Smith even turned away the wounded, calling them "rabid dogs". As a result many more persons died later and swelled up the count of fatal casualties.

(We have visited the Jallianwala Bagh in 2012, on a whirl-wind tour of Amritsar which our friend Rajan Trikha had arranged for - tasted the famous cuisine of Amritsar, dined at the famous Kesar-Da-Dhaba, (which had a branch in Lahore, Pakistan), witnessed the Wagah border lowering of the Flags Ceremony, saw the Golden Temple among other important sites of this famous city.  An account of our visit by Sumita  can be visited at the following link:

Food, Friends and Family: A trip to Gurgaon, Delhi and Amritsar

The aftermath:

- A fall-out of Dyer's indiscriminate firing on the assembled persons was that British India forces were forbidden to fire on civilians.

- The senseless violence catalysed the Indian Independence Movement and gave it a new shape and momentum.

- Rabindranath Tagore renounced the knighthood conferred upon him as a protest against this senseless brutality.

The Retribution:

In the 1930s, Reginald Dyer died of health issues.

Udham Singh, a Ghadar Party freedom fighter, avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, when he shot dead Michael O'Dwyer, former lieutenant governor of British Punjab, who had ordered the massacre at a meeting of East Indian Association at Caxton Hall in London on 13.03.1940, some 21 years later . He also fired several shots leaving Lord Zetland, Secretary for India, Lord Lamington, a former governor of Bombay and Louis Dane, former governor of Punjab wounded. He was overpowered and arrested on the spot.

He was given a short unfair trial of two days and the jury unanimously pronounced him guilty

Before sentencing, he was given a last chance to say something in his defence. He however, mentioned that he was not afraid to die, and wanted to help his country by highlighting their plight in England.

He also expressed a resolve that the "dirty English dogs" will be driven out of India, for all the misdeeds done by them, and in a political speech, tried to highlight the poor treatment of Indians under British Rule, which was not recorded by the judge.

An appeal filed on his behalf on 24.06.1940 citing inadequate defence before the jury, was turned down and he was martyred in Pentonville Prison, London on 31.07.1940.

Although he was martyred in 1940, his mortal remains were only returned to India in 1974.

He remains a popular martyr for the people of India/Punjab, who hold him in very high regard for his action in avenging the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

The narrow passage which leads to the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Site

Standing before the wall at Jallianwala Bagh memorial in which bullet marks fired by Dwyer's troops had penetrated the bricks

The description reads - "The wall has its own historic significance as it has twehty eight bullet marks which can be easily seen at present and these were fired into the crowd by the order of General Dyer. Moreover, no warning was given to disperse before Dyer opened fire (on the crowd) which was gathered here (peacefully protesting against the Rowlatt Act & celebrating the Festival of Baisakhi). One thousand six hundred and fifty rounds were fired."

                             The Jallianwala Bagh Memorial

The description of the above plaque reads - " JALLIANWALA BAGH"

"Jallianwala Bagh Massacre involved the killing of hundreds of unarmed defenseless Indians by a senior British military officer, Reginald Edward Harry Dyer on 13th April 1919 at this spot in the holy city of Amritsar. The Jallianwala Bagh then was property of family of Sardar Himmat Singh, a noble in the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. General Dyer deployed his rifle men, near the entrance and without warning or ordering the crowd to disperse, opened fire. The firing continued for 20 minutes and 1650 rounds of 0.303 Mark VI ammunition had been fired. The official figure is 379 killed and 1,200 wounded. The crowd was estimated at between 15,000 and 20,000. The Jallianwala Bagh was acquired by the nation on 1st August 1920 at the cost of Rs.5.65/- lakhs and the memorial befittingly named "THE FLAME OF LIBERTY" was built at a cost of Rs.9.25/- lakh. It was inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of the Republic of India, in the presence of Jawaharlal Nehru , the first Prime Minister of India on 13th April 1961."

"Very nicely written. I was under the impression that Udham Singh killed Michael O’Dwyer inside the British Parliament. I learned from your post that was not the case - it happened outside. Another piece of information that you may consider is that even though Udham Singh was martyred in 1940, his mortal remains were returned to India only in 1974. If accurate, you may include in your post."

"Another minor correction perhaps in spellings. Reginald Dyer led the troops who carried out the massacre. This man apparently died of health issues in the 1930s. Udham Singh killed Michael O’Dwyer who was then the Governor of Punjab and had ordered the massacre."

    2. Thank you so much for the valuable corrections. I have corrected the spelling of Reginald. I have also added a brief about the shooting of Michael O'Dwyer as mentioned by you, and three other persons who were shot and wounded by Udham Singh before he was overpowered. I have gone through so much material that this oversight on Michael would have gone unnoticed, but for your keen observation. Thanks again.
