The Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Casa Real de la Moneda has issued Collector coins on 27.05.2019 in the denominations of Gold (200 Euros or 4 Escudos) and Silver (10 Euros or 8 Reales), which are a part of the on-going Europa "The Ages of Europe" Star Series, which highlights the various eras of European civilisation.

The specific Ages or Epochs are taken from the seven eras depicted on the Eurozone Banknote Series introduced in 2002. The common theme for the 2019 dated Coins focusses on the Renaissance, which was prevalent in Europe during the 14th Century to the 17th Century AD, promoting the rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature and art, as well as, an awakening of a more enlightened mode of thinking and concept in political matters.

The Europa Coin Programme - A brief:

The Europa Coin Programme is an initiative dedicated to issuing collector coins in precious metals which celebrate European identity.

Coins issued under this series are issued by the European Union's Eurozone Member States and the issuing authorities of the European Union Member countries voluntarily contribute coins to the Europa Coin Programme.

The Europa Star Series highlights European achievements, anniversaries and common history or cultural ties.

Several countries have taken part in this programme, since its inception in 2004.

Some coins are denominated in Euros, while others are denominated in other currencies. These coins are all legal tender.

The Euro Star logo:

The Eurostar logo is the special mark used on these coins, which signify that they have been issued under the "Euro  Coin Programme". The design of the logo isa stylised combination of an "E" (often used to symbolise a member nation, for example on the EU Flag).

It is a requirement that the coins must show the Eurostar distinctly and visibly to the naked eye, but not be an integral to the coin's design.

Other standard features for coins issued under the programme:

a) The coins should be at least .900 Silver or Gold and be of Proof Quality.

b) The coins should be approx. "crown-sized" which allows for national traditions and customs.

c) The coins must show the Eurostar logo distinctly.

The themes over the past years for the Eurostar Programme coin issues:

2004 - EU Enlargement

2005 - Peace and Freedom

2006 - Distinguished European figures

2007 - European Realisation

2008 - Cultural Heritage

The coins issued by the Fabrica  Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Casa Real de la Moneda have been issued  under  the on-going "The Ages of Europe"  Theme of "Europa Coin Programme" - 2016:

The Coins issued by the Spanish Mint features three elements of cultural life which reflect this time and include - a portrait of the well-known fictional figure of Don Quixote authored by Miguel de Cervantes, the Palace of Carlos V and a portrait of Juan de la Cosa.

These Coins are released as the 16th Series of Coins of the Europa Programme and are fourth of the new concept of the programme for the 2016-2020 period - "Ages of Europe" - dedicated to Renaissance.

The Spanish Coins are referred to in their traditional denominations of Eight Reales (Silver) and Four Escudos (Gold) and are available separately or as a set of two coins.

The Silver 10 Euro (Eight Reales) Coin:

The Obverse and Reverse of the 10 Euro Silver coin shown placed together

The Reverse of the 10 Euro Silver Coin shows the depictions of - a portrait of Don Quixote, the Palace of Carlos V and a portrait of Juan de la Cosa (This image of Juan de la Cosa is preserved at the Naval Museum in Madrid).

Juan de la Cosa (1460-1510)

He was a Spanish navigator and cartographer, known for designing a European world map that incorporated the territories of the Americas. He played an essential role in the first and second travels of Christopher Columbus, as he was the owner and captain of the Santa Maria - one of the three ships that explored small islands and landed in America.

The image of la Costa is depicted with a colourised application on the Silver Proof strikes only.

The Palace of Carlos V, located in Alhambra, Granada:

Emperor Carlos V (reigned 1516-1556) built a magnificent royal residence in the territory conquered by his grand-parents - the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. The palace also became a Spanish symbol of the triumph of Christianity with the final victory in the war with Granada, which defeated the last Muslim state in Iberia and all of Western Europe.

Don Quixote:

The popular Spanish novel was written by Miguel de Cervantes (1547 - 1616), whose actual title was "The Ingenious Gentleman Sir Quixote of La Mancha".

Cervantes is considered to be the greatest writer in the Spanish language and was one of the world's preeminent novelists.

The Obverse of the 10 Euro Silver Coin is the common design for the fourth Europa Series and has been designed/engraved by artists from the Monnaie de Paris.

The profile portrait of King Filipe VI, facing left, is centred along with the inscription - "FILIPE VI REY DE ESPANA" (meaning "Philip VI, King of Spain"). On the upper periphery is inscribed - "REENACIMIENTO" (meaning "Renaissance"). The Europa star logo features prominently on the lower periphery, while the year of issue "2019" figures towards the lower right centre.
