a) Dr. Ambedkar and the Constitution of India: Commemorative stamps issued by the Department of Posts, India:

About Dr. B.R. Ambedkar:

The life of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, born on 14.04.1891 in a Mahar Family was marked by struggles, but he proved that every hurdle in life can be overcome with talent and firm determination. The biggest barrier in his life was the caste system adopted by the Hindu Society according to which the family he was born into belonged to the depressed classes as such he was considered to be “untouchable”.

After graduating from Elphinston College Bombay (present day Mumbai) in 1912, he did his higher studies at Columbia University, USA where he was awarded Ph.D.

Later, he was admitted to the London School of Economics and Political Science where he obtained a degree of D.Sc. (Eco), whereafter he became a Barrister from Gray’s Inn.

In 1927, he led the Mahad March at the Chowder Tank at Colaba, near Bombay (present day Mumbai), to give the Depressed Classes the right to draw water from a public tank. This marked the beginning of his crusade against the practice of social discrimination.

In 1930, he launched the Temple entry Movement at Kalaram Temple, Nasik which became another landmark in his struggle for human rights and social justice.

On 24.09.1932, Dr. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi reached an understanding popularly called the Poona Pact (present day Pune) which carved out a clear and definite position for the Depressed Classes in the political scene of the country. The Pact also opened up opportunities of education and Government service for them and gave them a right to vote.

Dr. Ambedkar attended all the three Round Table Conferences in London and every time, forcefully projected his views in the interest of the Depressed Classes.

He organised the Independent Labour Party, participated in Provincial Elections and was elected to the Bombay Legislative Assembly (present day Mumbai).

In 1947, when India became Independent, he became the first Law Minister of the Central Government. Nevertheless, he differed with the Government over the Hindu Code Bill and he resigned from the Central Government.

On 29.08.1947, Dr. Ambedkar was appointed the Chairman of the drafting Committee that was constituted by the Constituent assembly to draft a Constitution for Independent India. He played a seminal role in the framing of the Indian Constitution.

He used his vast experience and knowledge in drafting the Constitution, In his capacity as the chairman of the drafting Committee, he drafted a comprehensive workable Constitution. He gave Independent India its legal framework, and the people the basis of their freedom.

He was a champion of Fundamental Rights to the citizens.

Some Fundamental Rights contained in Articles 15 (2), 17, 23 and 24 are also enforceable against individuals as they are very significant rights relating to the prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth etc.

The text prepared by Dr. Ambedkar provided constitutional guarantees and protections for a wide range of civil liberties for individual citizens, including freedom of religion, the abolition of untouchability and outlawing all forms of discrimination.

He stood for extensive economic and social rights for women. His social democracy comprised politicians, political parties with high standards of political morality, honesty and integrity and highly responsible Opposition Party or Parties committed to the cause of the downtrodden and Depressed classes. The Preamble to the Indian Constitution echoes the principles of Parliamentary democracy.

In 1948, Dr. Ambedkar almost single-handedly, completed the draft of the Constitution of India and presented it to the Constituent Assembly.

In November 1949, this draft was adopted with very few amendments and came into force on 25.01.1950 marking the beginning of a new era in the history of India.

Dr Ambedkar passed away on 14.10.1956, secure in the knowledge that his life’s work was done.

In 1990, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the India Constitution was given the Bharat Ratna.

The contribution of Dr. Ambedkar in social, political and economic sectors is enormous and he is one of the key founders of Modern India. The life of Dr. Ambedkar is an inspiration to millions. Growing up in a very challenging environment and having faced many difficulties in childhood, Dr. Ambedkar completed his higher education in the best universities of the world, only due to his sheer determination, tremendous hard work and humility.
He is known as the Architect of the Constitution of India. The hard word done by him in the drafting of the Constitution, made it a powerful tool for social and economic empowerment of the downtrodden, which is praise-worthy. Dr. Ambedkar ensured that there are appropriate checks and balances in the democratic system of Government and ensured that the three wings of the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary, function independently with accountability to one another.

The following images are of a Rs.10/- circulation coin received by me during a recent trip to Kanpur from Chetali Jairath. Interestingly, after demonetisation, Bank branches in Kanpur were giving out bags of 100 ten rupee coins to customers giving withdrawal cheques in odd numbers, say Rs.3000/-. This coin is from one such lot:
