271) Historical First Day Covers (FDCs) on Post Independence India on Post Cards: Compiled by Karnataka Postal Circle of the Department of Posts, India in 2015:



In 2015, Karnataka Postal Circle of India Post has compiled a set of 32 Post Cards depicting historical First Day Covers from its official collection and an individual private collection, from after India became Independent from British Rule,  which are like a trip down memory lane with these Covers acting as important pictorial milestones: 
 The postcards, together with my descriptions of the Covers  are recreated here:


1) Issued on 15.08.1947, this First Day Cover (FDC) is titled “Jai Hind”. The Cancellation is with the Indian Flag and Rabindranath Tagore’s prayer for India:

“When the mind is without fear ant the head is held high:

Where knowledge is free:

Where the world has not been broken up into

Fragments by narrow domestic walls:

Where words come out from the depth of truth:

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection:

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit:

Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action –

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.”                                                      
Rabindranath Tagore

 The two Postage Stamps on this cover still show the portrait of George VI facing left and the denomination of the stamps as “9 pies”. The Postage is titled “India Postage” and there is a sign of victory along with the letter “V” on the stamps.

2) Issued on 15.12.1947, this First Day Cover (FDC) commemorates India’s Independence and bears two out of the three stamps which were issued on Independence Day – the Ashok Capitol (symbol of the Indian Government), the Stamp value being 1 ½ Annas and an Aeroplane, the Stamp value being 12 Annas.


 Issued on 15.08.1947, these three stamps depicting the Ashok Capitol (1 ½ Annas), National Flag (3 ½ Annas) and a Douglas IX 4 Aircraft (12 Annas) were the first three stamps of Independent India.

3) Issued on 08.06.1948, this Cover Commemorates the inauguration of the “India – UK Inaugural Flight”. The inscriptions are “AIR MAIL”, “BOMBAY – LONDON INAUGURAL FLIGHT” and “AIR-INDIA INTERNATIONAL”, “BOMBAY”, “CAIRO”, GENEVA”, “LONDON”. The colours on this envelope are those of the Indian Flag – Saffron, White and Green.The Cancellation Stamp reads - "Air Mail Bombay Mondon 8.6.49 First Flight".


4) Issued on 15.08.1948, this First Day Cover (FDC) is in memory of the Father of the Nation. The inscriptions on this Cover are “IN MEMORIUM OF THE FATHER OF OUR NATION MAHATMA GANDHI ‘THE LIGHT THAT SHONE’ – BORN 02 OCT 1869 – DIED 30 JAN 1948” Mahatma Gandhi is shown in the foreground with the Indian Tri-Colour. Three stamps depicting Mahatma Gandhi titled “Bapu” (in Hindi) meaning “Father” in the denominations of 1 ½, 3 ½ and 12 Annas are affixed. The Cancellation reads “Jai Hind” and is dated 15 August 1948.


 5) Issued on 15.08.1948, this is the Official First Day Cover of the First Anniversary of Indian Independence. The inscriptions read “Indian INDEPENDENCE” “FIRST ANNIVERSARY 15 AUGUST 1948”. “INDIAN POSTS & TELEGRAPHS”.  The stamps include four denominations of stamps on Mahatma Gandhi – 1 ½, 3 ½, 10 and 12 ½ Annas. The Cancellation reads “Jai Hind” and is dated 15 August 1948. 


6) Issued on 15.08.1948, this is a First Day Cover issued by the Bombay Philatelic Company on Mahatma Gandhi.  The symbolic image of Mahatma Gandhi standing in the foreground of the Indian Map reads “FIRST DAY COVER issued by THE BOMBAY PHILATELIC Co. FORT, BOMBAY. In the centre right is the inscription “GANDHI MEMORIAL STAMPS – 15th August 1948”. At the bottom is the inscription “THE GREAT PATRIOT – THE ARCHITECT OF OUR INDEPENDENCE”. The postage stamps are of the denominations of 1 ½, 3 ½ and 12 Annas. The Cancellation reads “Jai Hind” and is dated 15 August 1948.

7) Issued on 10.10.1949, this Cover commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the formation of the Universal Postal Union (UPA). There is a picture of the Globe on the left hand side, with Postal carriers – A Mail Aeroplane, Railways, A Mail Ship and a Horse Carriage (or Tonga) carting the inscription “ 75th ANNIVERSARIO U.P.U. 1874-1949. The Postage Stamps are in the denomination of 2, 3½, 12 Annas and 9 Pies. The stamps are titled “Universal Postal Union”.


8) Issued on 15.08.1949, this Cover Commemorates Archaeological Survey and is part of the Archaeological Series. On the left is mentioned “INDEPENDENCE DAY COVER” below which is a statue symbolising a Hindu God and 15 AUGUST 1949”. The Postage stamps contain pictures of famous Hindu temples and a dancing Nataraj (The Hindu God Shiva) in a Tandav Dance pose (meaning “The Dance of Destruction”). The Cancellation Stamp reads – “Poona, Independence Day, 15 Aug 1949”.


9) Issued on 30.01.1949, this Cover Commemorates “Inland and Night Airmail inauguration” with a Mahatma Gandhi slogan “Sabko Sanmati de Bhagwan” (meaning “God give everyone good or right judgment or mind or a good understanding”). Affixed on the Cover are two 1 ½ Annas postage Stamps. The Cancellation Stamp is dated “30.01.49, NAGPUR, AIR” and “FIRST FLIGHT”.


10) Issued on 15.08.1949, this Cover Commemorates Archaeological Survey and is part of the Archaeological Series. On the left is mentioned “INDEPENDENCE DAY COVER” below which is a statue symbolising a Hindu God and 15 AUGUST 1949”. The Postage stamps contain pictures of famous Hindu temples and a dancing Nataraj (The Hindu God Shiva) in a Tandav Dance pose (meaning “The Dance of Destruction”). There are also stamps depicting the Taj Mahal & Kutub Minar. The Cancellation Stamp reads – “Poona, Independence Day, 15 Aug 1949”.


11) Issued on 26.01.1950, this Cover Commemorates the Republic of India and the Inauguration of the new Constitution. On the left are images of the Indian Parliament and the Constitution of India on top of which is mentioned “BHARAT – REPUBLIC OF INDIA”. The postage stamps show musical instruments, a Farmers implements, an inkpot and a quill, the “Charkha” or the “Spinning Wheel”. The Cancellation Stamp is “Bombay dated 26.01.1950”.


12) Issued on 01.03.1951, this First Day Cover (FDC) commemorates the “1st ASIAN GAMES” held on 4th March 1951. There is an image of a running athlete, with the Globe in th background symbolising the growing emergence of these Games on the International platform. The two Postage stamps are of the value of 2 and 12 Annas and depict the Flame of the asian Games. The Cancellation stamp is of New Delhi, dated 04.03.1951 and depicts two wrestlers.

13) Issued on 01.10.1952, this is the official Cover on Saints and Poets of India – Rabindranath Tagore, Meera, Ghalib, Surdas, Tuldidas, Kabir. The Stamps are of the value of 12 Annas, 2 ½ Annas, 4 ½ Annas, 4 ½ Annas, 1 Anna and 9 Pies respectively. There is a picture of a displaying Peacock with, book and a Veena (a musical instrument). The Cancellation Stamp is of Bombay dated 1 Oct 1952.


14) Issued on 02.10.1953, this First Day Cover commemorates the Conquest of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the World. The Cover shows a picture of the Himalayan Mountain Range including Mount Everest with photos of the conquering Mountaineers – Edmund Hillary on the left and Tenzing Norgay on the right shown in small circles, below whch is mentioned “INDIA – CONQUEST OF MOUNT EVEREST”. The Postage Stamps are titled “Conquest of Everest” and are dated “29.05.53” (the date of the Everest Conquest). The Postage Stamps are of the value of 2 and 14 Annas. The Cancellation is of Bombay GPO. and is titled "Everest Vijay" (meaning "Conquest of Everest").


15) Issued on 16.04.1943, this First Day Cover (FDC) commemorates the Centenary of the Indian Railways (1853-1953). Depicted on this Cover are images of the old Railways with an old design Steam Engine pulling a Goods Bogie, and a Modern Steam Engine pulling a Passenger Train. In the centre is mentioned “16th April 1953” INDIAN RAILWAYS CENTENARY 1853 – 1953”. The Postage Stamp is of 2 Annas and titled “RAILWAY CENTENARY” and depicts an old engine with the year mentioned as 1853 and a modern day engine with the year mentioned as 1953. The Cancellation Stamp is of Bombay and is dated “16.04.1953”.

16) Issued on 01.11.1953, this First Day of Issue Cover commemorates the Centenary of India Telegraph Centenary (1851 – 1951). On the left is shown Telegraph lines and the crackling of a telegraph machine as it sends out its messages. Mentioned on this image is “INDIA TELEGRAPH CENTENARY B.D.S. PRODUCTION”. The Postage Stamp is of the value of 2 Annas and shows multiple telegraph lines on poles. The Cancellation is titled “Bhartiya Telegraph Shatabdi” (meaning “Indian Telegraph Centenary”).



17) Issued on 24.10.1954, this First Day Cover commemorates United Nations Day. On the Cover is shown the logo of the United Nations with “INDIA” mentioned alongside symbolising that India was a part of the United Nations. There are trees growing on mountains and a clearer picture shows the Lotus, the National Flower of India, blooming in all its glory in a water body.  The ribbon at the bottom reads “UNITED NATIONS DAY”. The date is mentioned as “24th October 1954”. The 2 Annas Postage Stamp is titled “United Nations Day” and shows the logo of the UNO and the Lotus. The Cancellation Stamp is of Madras GPO and is dated “24 Oct 54”.



18) Issued on 01.10.1954, this First Day Cover commemorates the “Indian Postage Stamp Centenary (1854-1954)”. The Cover reads “Postage Stamp Centenary” and shows a 1854 Stamp of One Anna depicting Queen Victoria and a 1954 Stamp of 3 Annas depicting the Lion Capitol Emblem of the government of India. The four stamps beautifully show the evolution of the Indian Postal delivery – The Indian Dak Runner, the Camel Mode of Postal Delivery, the Pigeon Carrier, the cycling postman (which is a mode of delivery, prevalent even today), the Mail Aircraft, the Mail-ship etc. The Postage Stamps are of the value of 1, 2, 4 and 14 Annas. The Cancellation Stamp is of Bombay GPO.

19) Issued on 26.01.1955, this First Day Cover is on the Five Year Plan.  Stamps depicting various facets of a resurgent India have been affixed on this Cover. The Cancellation Stamp is of Bombay GPO and prominently displays the numeral 5. The Cancellation is dated 26.01.55.


20) Issued on 24.05.1956, this Firat Day Cover (FDC) commemorates 2500th Buddha Jayanti” or the “2500th Anniversary of the Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana”. The Postage Stamps show the Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha attained his Enlightenment and the “Dharma Chakra” and are of the value of 2 Annas and 14 Annas. The Cancellation Stamp is of Bombay GPO and is inscribed “2500 vin Buddha Jayanti” and is dated “24.05.56”.

21) Issued on 24.05.1956, this First Day Cover also commemorates the “2500th Buddha Jayanti” ot the “2500th Anniversary of the Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana”.  There is a picture of a green Leaf with the inscription “2500th Buddha Jayanti” on the left side. The two Stamps which are there on the above FDC are also affixed to this Cover with the Cancellation Stamp of Bombay GPO dated “25.05.56”.


22) Issued on 15.08.1957, this First Day of Issue Cover (FDC) commemorates the Centenary of the 1857 First War of Indian Independence. The picture shows the legendary Jhansi-Ki-Rani with a sword in hand symbolising the fight for Independence, and with a map of India in the background bound with a Chain shown inside an artistic arch. Also shown below this image are the pictures of the brave Generals Tatya Tope and Nana Sahib and the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar who participated with all the resources at their disposal in the First War of Indian Independence. The Postage stamp of “15 Naya Paise” shows the legendary Jhansi – Ki – Rani on horseback sword in hand heading towards the field of battle outside Jhansi Fort. (Notice that this stamp is denominated in “Naye Paise” which were introduced in 1957 marking the introduction of the decimal coinage in India. The Cancellation Stamp is of Bombay GPO and is dated “15 Aug 57”.

23) Issued on 15.08.1957, this First Day Cover (FDC) also commemorates the Centenary of the 1857 First War of Indian Independence. The picture shows the legendary Jhansi-Ki-Rani with a sword in hand, heading towards the field of battle outside Jhansi Fort symbolising the fight for Independence. The Postage stamp is denominated in “15 Naye Paise” shows the legendary Jhansi – Ki – Rani on horseback sword in hand heading towards the field of battle outside Jhansi Fort, while the other stamp is denominated in “90 Naye Paise” and shows an “Eternal Flame” (Martyrs memorial) for the Indian patriots who fought for the freedom of their country with a sapling growing in the centre symbolising renewal. The Cancellation Stamp is of Bombay GPO and is dated “15 Aug 57”.
 24) Issued on 15.08.1957, this First Day Cover (FDC) commemorates the Centenary of the 1857 First War of Indian Independence. The picture shows the legendary Jhansi-Ki-Rani with a sword in hand, in the field of battle outside Jhansi Fort against the British Army symbolising the fight for Independence. The Postage stamp is denominated in “15 Naye Paise” shows the legendary Jhansi – Ki – Rani on horseback sword in hand heading towards the field of battle outside Jhansi Fort, while the other stamp is denominated in “90 Naye Paise” and shows an “Eternal Flame” (Martyrs memorial) for the Indian patriots who fought for the freedom of their country with a sapling growing in the centre symbolising renewal. The Cancellation Stamp is of Bombay GPO and is dated “15 Aug 57”.



25) Issued on 04.04.1957, this First Day Cover (FDC) symbolises the introduction of the Decimal Coinage in India. There is an inscription “Father Coin” or “100 Naye Paise” coin denoting the highest denomination of coin introduced in the New Series. The other denominations are 50, 10, 25, 5, 2 and 1 Naye Paise. Various denominations are seen on the Postage Stamps – 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 13, 20, 25, 50 and 75 Paise value. The Cancellation Stamp of Madras GPO is in the shape of a 10 Naye Paise coin and is inscribed “Dashmik Sikke” (meaning “Decimal Coins”) and is dated “04.04.57”.

26) Issued on 14.11.1957, this First Day Cover (FDC) commemorates “Children’ Day”. There is the image of two children playing on a swing and children are depicted on all three Postage Stamps of the value of 15, 8 and 15 Naya Paise respectively. The Cancellation Stamps are of three years and have the dates “14.11.57, 14.11.58, 14.11.59” on them and are of New Delhi GPO.

27) Issued on 22.06.1960, this First Day Cover commemorates the poet, Kalidas. Scenes from his work “Shakuntala” (Shakuntala was the wife of Dushyant and the mother of Samrat “Bharat”, after whom our country gets its name. Her story is told in the Indian epic “Mahabharat” and dramatised by Kalidas in the play “Abhijnansakuntala” – meaning “the sign of Shakuntala”) are depicted on the 15 NP and Rs.1.03 Stamps having the Calcutta GPO Cancellation stamps dated “22 June 60”.



28) Issued on 18.02.1961, this First Day Cover commemorates the First Aerial Post, Golden Jubilee (1911-1961). Shown in the picture and on the Postage Stamps, are the first flight aeroplane and a modern day aircraft. The Postage stamps are of the value of Re 1, and 15 Naye Paise respectively. The Cancellation Stamp is of Jaipur GPO and is inscribed Golden Jubilee and depicts a mail carrying aircraft and is dated “18.02.61”.



29) Issued on 07.10.1963, this First Day Cover is on the Preservation of Wildlife. The Postage Stamps show a Himalayan Panda, a Tiger, an Indian Lion, an Indian Elephant and an Indian Bison or “Gaur”. The Postage Stamps are of the value of 15, 30 and 50 Naye Paise and Re.1/-. The Cancellation Stamps are of New Delhi GPO and are dated “07.10.63”.


30) Issued on 23.01.1964, this First Day Cover commemorates Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. There is a picture of the INA logo on the Cover and Netaji’s photos along with the INA logo on the two postage stamps of 15 and 55 Naye Paise. The Cancellation Stamp is of Bombay GPO and is inscribed “Subhash Chandra Bose” and has the cancellation date “23.01.64”.



31) Issued on 23.01.1964, this First Day Cover also, commemorates Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. There is a picture of the INA Martyr’s Memorial in Singapore on the Cover and Netaji’s photos along with the INA logo on the two postage stamps of 15 and 55 Naye Paise. The Cancellation Stamp is of Bombay GPO and is inscribed “Subhash Chandra Bose” and has the cancellation date “23.01.64”.

 32) Issued on 15.12.1997, this First Day Cover commemorates “Indipex 97” at the “Philatelic Congress of India”. This FDC also contains a Miniature Sheet of a Stamp of Rs.45/- on Mother Teresa and with her holding a child in her arms. The Cancellation Stamp is of New delhi GPO and is dated “15.12.1997”.

    1. Thank you for visiting the blog. These postcards were a one time issue from the Karnataka Postal Circle of India Post, based on a private collection, so they may not be readily available except a few on sites like eBay or with Philately dealers.
