About
Konark Sun Temple:
The
legend & past history:
Legend has it that the Temple
was constructed by Samba, the second son of Lord Krishna. Samba was afflicted
by leprosy and after twelve years of penance was cured by “Surya”, the Sun God, in whose honour he built this temple. The name
“Konark is derived from the two Sanskrit words – “Kona” (meaning “corner” or “angle”) and “Ark” (meaning “Sun”) as the Temple is dedicated to the Sun God “Surya”.
The present structure of
the Konark Sun Temple was built by King Narasimhadeva I (1238-1264 AD) of the Eastern
Ganga Dynasty in 1255 AD.
The Temple is located at a
distance of about 35 kilometres from Puri and 65 kilometres from Bhubaneswar. The
Temple Complex was conceived in the shape of a gigantic chariot which has
elaborately carved stone wheels. The Konark sun Temple has a phenomenal wealth
of decorations from minute patterns in its bas-relief dome to boldly modelled
free standing sculptures of exceptionally large size.
Designated as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site in 1984, a large part of the Temple is now in disrepair
and has underwent renovation.
The UNESCO description in
a UNESCO book titled “Treasures of the World” – a complete guide to the UNESCO
World Heritage Sites reads as under :–
“On the shores of the Bay
of Bengal bathed in the rays of the rising sun, the temple at Konarak was one
of the earliest centres of sun worship in India. Built around 1250, the entire
temple was conceived as a representation of the Sun God “Surya’s” chariot, with
a set of spokes and elaborate carvings. Its twenty-four wheels are decorated with
symbolic designs referring to the cycle of the seasons and the months, and it
is led by a team of seven horses, six of them which still exist. The temple is
carefully oriented so as to permit the first rays of the Sun to strike its
principal entry. It is one of the most famous temples dedicated to the Sun in
Asia. Legend has it that the temple was constructed by Samba, the second son of
Lord Krishna. Samba was afflicted by leprosy and after twelve years of penance
was cured by Surya, the Sun God, in whose honour he built this temple.”
The Temple is one of the
most sublime monuments in the World, famous as much for its imposing dimensions
and faultless proportions as for the harmonious integration of architectural
grandeur. Its elegant art-work, beautifully engraved animals and human figures
give it a vast superiority over other temples in India and other such structures
in the World.
The
Temple is also listed as one of the Seven Wonders of India.
The
Temple Concept and Construction:
The Temple was originally constructed
at the mouth of the River Chandraprabha. It was built in the form of a
giant ornamented chariot of the Sun God “Surya”
with twelve pairs of elaborately carved stone wheels, each of them three metres
wide and is pulled by a group of seven horses (four on the right and three on
the left).
A Chariot Wheel at the Konark Sun Temple which also acts as a Sundial.
The wheels of the chariot are Sundials
which can be used to calculate time accurately to a minute including day and
night.
The Temple is built in the
traditional Kalinga Architectural style. It is carefully oriented
towards the East so that the first rays of the sunrise strike the main
entrance. The temple is built from Khondalite rocks.
The original Temple had a
main “Sanctum Sanctorum”
(or “Vimana”) which was
originally built upto a height of 229 feet (or about 70 metres) tall, which is
where the main deity presided. The weight of the 70 metres tall super structure
was substantial and it is believed that Portuguese seamen removed the strong
magnetised rod at the centre of the dome (which had till then attracted the
iron ore laden rocks and kept them in a state of balance) which ultimately led
to weakening of the structure and in the main “Vimana” falling down in 1837.
The Audience Hall (“Jagamohan”) is about 128 Feet (or
about 30 metres) tall and has elaborate external projections and still stands
present day. It was built as the principal structure among other structures
like the Dance Hall (“Natya Mandir”)
and Dining Hall (“Bhog Mandap”)
, the latter two, have become dilapidated with the passage of time &
seeming neglect.
The Konark Temple is
replete with several erotic sculptures of “Maithuna” meaning sexual union in a “Tantrik” ritual context).
The entire Temple compound
measures 857 feet by 540 feet.
The alignment of the
Konark Sun Temple is towards the East-West direction. The Temple is located
in natural surroundings with several varieties of trees growing around it.
Two smaller temples
were discovered near the Konark Sun Temple – one dedicated to one of the
wives of the Sun God “Surya”, Mayadevi”
(which was built around the late 11th century and predates the main
Sun Temple). The other one seemingly belongs to a “Vaishnav”
Deity, as sculptures of Balaram, Varaha and Trivikram have been found at
the Temple site (which is most likely, considering that Samba, the son of Lord
Krishna is credited with having built the first “Surya” temple). The main idols of both temples are missing.
The Archaeological Survey
of India (ASI) maintains a collection of some of the fallen sculptures at the “Konark
Archaeological Museum”.

Some interesting depictions of the Sun Chariot of the Sun God "Surya":
The Trundholm Sun Chariot:
The Trundholm Sun Chariot (in Danish “Solvognen”) is a late Nordic Bronze age
artefact discovered in Denmark. It is a representation of the Sun chariot, a
bronze statue of a horse and a large bronze disk which are placed on a device
with spoked wheels.
It was discovered in 1902 in a peat bog
on the Trundholm moor in West Zealand County on the Northwest coast of the
island of Sealand (Sjaelland) Denmark.
The two sides of the disk
have been interpreted as an indication of the Sun drawn across the heavens from
East to West during the day, presenting its bright side to the earth and
returning from the West to East during the night, when the dark side is
presented to the Earth. It is believed that a chariot similar to the artefact
was pulled around during religious rituals to demonstrate the movement of the
Sun in the heavens.
The above is an image of
the Trundholm Sun Chariot, from the early bronze age, discovered in Denmark. The Chariot is brightly lit/polished representing the Sun’s
rays falling on the planet Earth as it traverses through the Sky during the day
on his horse-driven chariot.
The above is an image of
the Trundholm Sun Chariot, which is dull/unpolished, representing darkness of
the night as the Sun’s chariot has traversed beyond this face of the Earth and
night/darkness has fallen.
In Norse Mythology, a reference to the sun being drawn by a
chariot is found.
The Nordic myths were
preserved orally for several thousands of years, similar to the oral traditions
of the Hindu Mythology (“Shruti” – meaning “heard” and passed on
through generations through oral traditions till they were written down in the
Vedic texts).
In Norse Mythology, the Sun Goddess “Sol” personifies
the Sun, who rode through the sky on her chariot
pulled by two horses – “Arvak” and “Alsvid”.
The Trundholm Sun chariot may represent an even earlier form of the Sun which
predated the Sun Goddess, Sol.
Similarly in Celtic Mythology, the Sky God "Taranis" is typically
depicted with the attribute of the spoked wheel.
The Rig-Veda, a Hindu text also mentions the Sun God’s “Surya’s”chariot passing
through the heavens, with seven horses (representing the seven colours of the
rainbow or the seven chakras in the human body), yoked to his chariot
named – “Gayatri”, “Brhati”, “Usnik”,
“Jagati”,
“Tristup”,
“Anustup”
and “Pankti”,
driven by the charioteer Aruna.
The Sun God has been described as traversing a distance
of 95,100,000 yojanas or 760,800,000 miles in his orbit around the “Bhu-Mandala” in his horse-driven chariot
at a speed of 2,000 yojanas and two kosas (16,004 kms) in a moment.

Surya temples exist all over India, the most famous being the Sun Temple, at Konark, Orissa. "Surya" is also described as “Mitra” (meaning “friend” for its life nourishing qualities).

This kind of an alignment
of the Sun & the Konark
Temple also takes place.

ReplyDelete"Thank you Rajeev for this very informative post. Have you visited Konark? If not, please plan a visit. A nice place between Bhubaneswar and Puri. If you go, take the marine drive between Konark and Puri. It is very scenic and enjoyable."
Thank you so much. This is one of the few places which we are very keen on visiting but have missed doing so somehow. Still on our "bucket list".

Thank you so much Vineeta. Bookings for such personal stamps are going on under the "MyStamps project" of epostoffice through the National Philatelic Museum, New Delhi. In case you are interested, you can book online for a stamp album . It is a very simple procedure. The people at the epostoffice are extremely helpful and efficient.

Thank you Lalingkar sahab.
DeleteHi, can you please check the last three images depicting alignment with the sun of the Konark temple.. Konark does not have multiple spires.. these images look like the Ankot Wat temple, Cambodia
ReplyDeleteThese images and information were carried on a website which was ostensibly the official website of the Konark Temple a few months ago, so I had placed them on my post on Banknotes of Denmark in July 2015. In any case, they illustrated how a Sun Temple is aligned to the path of the Sun.
DeletePhanom Rung Castle in Thailand are those pics not Konark...
ReplyDeleteThank you. These images were given as a representative sample of how a Sun Temple is aligned to the movement of the Sun. Such alignments take place in many temples around the World.
DeleteThe place is incredible for picture takers and is a noteworthy community for angling and salt creation in Konark.

Very methodical. The write up reflects your passion for your hobbies. I too has a small collection of stamps yet to be sorted out.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for visiting my blog and writing to me. All the best with sorting out your stamp collection. I have given up cataloguing my stamps a long time ago. I just know that a particular stamp is somewhere there in my collection.
