The Ministry of Minority Affairs and Ministry of Culture have organised a two-month long cultural spectacle in co-ordination with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and ParZor (Parsi-Zoroastrian Foundation for Preservation of Vulnerable Human Heritage) titled “The Everlasting Flame International Programme”.

The Programme has commenced on 19.03.2016 and will last till 29.05.2016.

Some other National and International partners participating in the Programme are SOAS, University of London, British Library, British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Ancient India and Iran Trust, UK, The State Hermitage Museum, Russia, National Museum of Iran, Tehran, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS), Mumbai, Tata Central Archives, Pune, Bombay Parsi Punchayet (Alpaiwala Museum), Mumbai and several private lenders across the World, particularly members of the Parsi communities, who have made important contributions.

The Programme saw three exhibitions being organised, titled:

“The Everlasting Flame: Zoroastrianism in History and Imagination” at the National Museum (inaugurated on 19.03.2016),

“Painted Encounters: Parsi Traders and the Community and No Parsi is an Island” at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) (inaugurated on 20.03.2016) and,

“Threads of Continuity: Zoroastrian Life and Culture” at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) (inaugurated on 20.03.2016)

The three exhibitions narrate the story of the beginning of Zoroastrian culture, its spread across the world and the continuity of traditions among communities through historic, artistic and civilizational objects from India, UK, Iran, Russia, Uzbekistan and other Institutional and private donors.

The exhibitions showcase the emergence of Zoroastrianism as the foremost religion of Imperial Iran. From the shores of Iran to the West Coast of India, the maritime journey of Zoroastrians is followed to their settlement in India where they came to be known as Parsis. The exhibitions examine their growth as an immigrant community under the British Raj in India and the later expansions. The narrative is divided into ten sections – The Ancient World, Sacred Texts, The Silk Road, Central Asia and China, The Judeo-Christian World, Imperial and Post-Imperial Iran, Post Arab Conquest, Journey and Early Settlement in India, Parsi Salon and Fire Temple, among other initiatives. The exhibitions have drawn on the rich collection of the National Museum, New Delhi which enhances the narrative and makes a connection with the Indian Heritage of Zoroastrianism.

 The exhibitions will also celebrate “Navroze” (the Zoroastrian New Year), an international  a conference on “Zoroastrianism in the New Millennium (ZITNM) 2016” and are accompanied with many cultural and educational programmes and publications – Panel Discussions with the curators of the three Exhibitions, “Udvada” – a Photographic exhibition along with other Photographic Exhibitions, Talks on the Zoroastrian Diaspora, personal experiences of Parsis in India, Art Collections, ParZor Film Festival – “Pir-e-Chak Chak”, “Zoroastrian Motifs in Parsi embroidery”, “Café Irani Chai” and “Glimpses from the Bahrot Caves”, “Homi Bhabha” et al.

Over generations, Parsis not only stayed having adapted to the Indian context, preserved their culture, identity, endured their core beliefs, lived with dignity but have also become role models for others.

All the Parsi-Zoroastrian cultural events were sponsored by Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla in the memory of his late wife Villoo Poonawalla.

In addition, there are Parsi food stalls every day and “Muskil-e-Asan” Participative Prayer Rituals every Friday at IGNCA.

Some interesting facts about the Programme:

-This is the first exhibition on this theme ever held at the National Museum, New Delhi

-This is the first time that British Library, UK has lent its relevant collection to India

-This is the first time that the National Museum of Iran, Tehran has lent objects to India

-This is the first collaboration between the Ministry of Minority Affairs and Ministry of Culture

-Zoroastrianism is one of the oldest religions of the world. Ancient Avestan (the language of Zoroastrians) and Sanskrit belong to the same group of languages

The oldest object in the exhibition attributed to early Zoroastrianism is the cuneiform tablet from the historic Royal Library of Ninevah (Mesopotamia) where the names of Gods inscribed on the tablet include an early form of the principle Zoroastrian deity “Ahura Mazda”. This object is presently in the custody of the British Museum.

Concept of an “Eternal” or “Everlasting Flame”:

The “Eternal Flame” or “Everlasting Flame” is a flame or lamp or torch that burns continuously for an indefinite period.

Most Eternal Flames are ignited and tended intentionally, but some are natural phenomena caused by natural gas leaks, peat fires and coal seam fires, all of which can be initially ignited by lightning, piezoelectricity or human activity and all of which can burn for an indefinite period of time – for decades or centuries. In ancient times, human-tended eternal flames were fuelled by wood or olive oil, but nowadays a piped gas supply of propane or natural gas is used.

Eternal Flames generally commemorate a person or event of national or religious significance or serve as a reminder of commitment to a common goal, such as International Peace or the tenets of the religious faith.

The “Everlasting Flame” in Zoroastrianism:

The “Eternal Flame” or “Everlasting Flame” is a long-standing tradition in Zoroastrianism. In Ancient Iran, the “atar” was tended by a dedicated priest and represented the concept of “Divine Sparks” or “Amesha Spenta” as understood in Zoroastrianism. (“Amesha Spenta” is an Avestan language term for a class of divine entities in Zoroastrianism and literally means “immortal” or “holy”. Later Persian variations of this term include “Ameshaspand”, “Mahraspand” and “Amahraspand”.

In Zoroastrian tradition, “Amesha Spenta” refers to the Great Six “Divine Sparks” of the “Ahura Mazda” (the Avestan name for the Creator and sole God of Zoroastrianism – Ahura standing for “Mighty” or “Lord” and Mazda standing for “wisdom”).

The six Divine Sparks stand for:

“[Vohu] Manah” meaning “Good Purpose”

“Asa [Vahista]” meaning “[Best] Truth/ Righteousness”

“Xsa0ra [Vairya]” meaning [Desirable] Dominion”

“[Spenta] Armati” meaning “[Holy] Devotion”

“Haurvatat” meaning “Wholeness”

“Ameretat” meaning “Immortality”

The doctrine between “Ahura Mazda” and the “Amesha Spenta” believes that “Ahura Mazda” created the Universe with his “Thought” and gave to the world the six “Divine Sparks”.

Veneration for the “Divine Sparks” through the living world is still present in modern day Zoroastrian tradition and is evident in every religious ceremony, where each of the “Amesha Spenta” is symbolised by objects of which they are the Guardians.

In addition, the first seven days of the month of the Zoroastrian calendar are dedicated to the “Great Heptad” and to “Creation”, thereby acknowledging the pre-eminence of the “Amesha Spenta” and ensuring the inculcation/imbibing of this doctrine/belief.

Zoroastrianism and Rig Vedic Hinduism are like sister cultures that share linguistic and cultural commonalities. The most important, however, is the Eternal Flame – “Agni” or “Atash” that burns in everyone’s heart and symbolises the battle of light and darkness in the mind and heart of every human being. This was also realised by the Prophet Asho Zarathustra in the Bronze Age.

Followers of the Bronze Age Prophet Zarathustra of Iran, the Parsi-Zoroastrians are one of the distinct threads in the tapestry of multi-cultural India. With the central tenet “Humata, Hukta, Huvarsta” (Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds), Zoroastrianism has lived from pre-history with its core beliefs still intact.

“ParZor” a UNESCO Parsi Zoroastrian Project,

The Preservation of Culture and Heritage in an increasingly mono-cultural modern world is the challenge which communities face today. As such, UNESCO, New Delhi, has initiated the ParZor Project” for “Preservation of Parsi-Zoroastrian Heritage.

As a driving force that impels its followers to excel in all fields of human endeavour and contribute vastly for the benefit of humankind, the community in India is found to be declining at an alarming rate.

The Project endeavours to arrest the declining trend in Parsi-Zoroastrian population and also aims at reviving the multi-cultural ethos that makes the unique ethnic and cultural identity of the Parsi-Zoroastrians. “Jiyo Parsi” is a scheme to arrest the decline in the population of the Parsi Zoroastrian community in India. This scheme, supported by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India, Bombay Parsi Punchayat and Tata Institute of Social Sciences has two components – the Advocacy component   and the Medical component. 

The Project also, envisages at creating awareness about the urgency of preserving the tangible heritage of the Parsis for posterity.

Tangible heritage material like manuscripts, paintings, photographs and personal libraries to heritage sites, embroidery, jewellery, silver, old traditional furniture and artefacts, old post cards and toys etc. are proposed to be preserved.

In addition, ParZor archives contain Play/Theatre scripts under the initiative “Preserving Parsi Theatre” with several hand-written scripts of several plays in the archives.

Furthermore, the Project aims to re-establish contact with Iran, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan where the Zoroastrian links are being seen as a part of culture and history of the Region.

The Parsi-Zoroastrian Project, also, intends to generate awareness in this miniscule community of its core objectives.
