Indian Naval Air Squadron 300: A Special Cover issued by Maharashtra Postal

Indian
Naval Air Squadron 300 (INAS 300) has its Base at INS Hansa:
The Indian Naval Air
Squadron (INAS 300) is an Indian Naval Air Squadron based on INS Hansa. INS
Hansa is an Indian Naval Air Station located near Dabolim in Goa, in the Indian
State of Goa. INS Hansa is the Base for the following Squadrons:
INAS 300, “White Tigers” operating Mikoyan MiG
– 29 K fighters,
INAS 303,”Black Panthers” operating Mikoyan
MiG-29K fighters,
INAS 310, “Cobras”,
operating Dornier Do 228 aircraft in electronic warfare roles,
INAS 315, “Winged
stallions”, operating the II-38 anti-submarine warfare aircraft,
INAS 321, “Angels”
operating HAL Chetak helicopters for search and rescue,
INAS 339, “Falcons”,
operating Kamov Ka-31 AEW Helicopters,
INAS 551, “Phantoms”
operating HAL HJT-16 Kiran jet trainers,
INAS 552, “Braves”,
operating Harrier T-60 trainers.
The
“White Tigers” (INAS 300) over the years:
Induction
of Hawker Sea Hawk Aircraft:
On 7.07.1960, the “White
Tigers”, as the Indian Naval Air Squadron 300 (INAS 300) is called because of
its White Tiger insignia, was commissioned at RNAS Brawdy, UK.
The Commissioning Warrant
was read out by Lt. Cdr. B.D. Law, the first Squadron Commander at a ceremony
attended by the then Indian High Commissioner to UK.
The Squadron was initially
equipped with the “Hawker Sea Hawk”
aircraft.
On 18.05.1961, for
the first time, Lt. Cdr. R.H Tahiliani carried out the first deck landing on
INS Vikrant on a Sea Hawk IN 156.
On 31.07.1961, the
Squadron left RNAS Brawdy, with eleven “Hawker Sea Hawks” and joined INS Vikrant
off the Isle of Wight. From the time of their raising, the “White Tigers” (so
called because of their distinctive “White Tiger” logo/insignia) have brought
about a transformational change in the concept of Indian Naval Operations. The Squadron
stands for excellence, determination and aggressive spirit and it heralded the
era of carrier borne aviation into the Indian Navy.
During
the next ten years the Indian Navy inducted fifty-four Sea Hawks in a phased
manner, with the last aircraft being delivered in December 1971.
In the 1971 Indo-Pak
War, the Squadron’s “Sea Hawk” Aircraft were deployed in action from INS
Vikrant and this premier carrier borne fighter squadron achieved iconic status
in the India Navy with its distinguished service. When the War ended, INAS had
not suffered a single loss and won one Maha Vir Chakra, four Vir Chakras and
one Nau Sena Medal and four Mentions in Despatches.
Induction
of Sea Harriers into the INAS 300:
In
1983, after the Sea Hawks had provided outstanding service for over two decades, the Squadron
was equipped with Sea Harriers
replacing the Sea Hawks which flew their last missions in active service.
Sea Harriers have been used with telling effect
by World Navies in combat – for example, during the Falklands War, Gulf wars
and the NATO intervention in Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Over the years, the Sea
Harriers acquitted themselves with distinction in Indian Naval Service and
matched their performance, with the best aircraft in US, British and French
navies.
Recently, the ageing Sea
Harriers were given a weapon and avionics upgrade to keep abreast with evolving
technology. The upgraded Sea Harrier was christened LUSH (Limited Upgrade
Sea Harrier) which came as a major boost to the capabilities of INAS 300.
The Sea Harriers in their
new “avatar” were a formidable force to reckon with. LUSH Aircraft fitted with Beyond
Visual Range Missiles (BVR) could hold their own in any combat situation.
INAS
300 with its potent Sea Harriers formed the teeth of Naval Combat Power and
consequently was at the centre of Naval Operational strategy.
The
Sea Harriers bow out from active duty in an impressive ceremony:
On 11.05.2016, the
Sea Harriers were replaced by MIG-29K fighters after they were retired in a
ceremony held at INS Hansa.
The
illustrious and unique Sea Harriers of the INAS 300 were given a befitting
farewell at a function organised on INS Hansa.
The function was attended
by Admiral R. K. Dhowan, Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba,
Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command, Serving and Retired
Officers and men of the Indian Navy and personnel who have served in the INAS
300.
The Squadron has played a
stellar role in the defence of the country with the professionalism of the
pilots, maintenance crew and personnel associated with the Sea Harriers keeping
the aircraft in peak efficiency levels during their active operations.
MiG-29K
Aircrafts are inducted in INAS 300:
The
baton had now been passed on to the proud young pilots of the MiG-29K Squadron
who have been successful in seamlessly integrating the fighter aircraft with
INS Vikramaditya in the shortest possible time.
The
Farewell to Sea Harriers:
The Sea Harriers flew one
last time in an impressive ceremony, with the Mig-29K Squadron flanking them
and ceremoniously taking the place of the Sea Harriers which have rendered
yeoman service to the nation ever since their induction. After 33 years of
sterling service to the Nation, the Sea Harriers were being de-inducted from
the Indian Navy and undertook their last flight in active service.
The air display included
supersonic passes by MiG-29Ks and formation flying by two each Sea Harriers and
MiG-29Ks.
The
composite air display symbolised a smooth transition from the old to the new
aircraft in continuance with the proud legacy of the INAS 300. On completion of the Air Display, “washing
down of the Sea Harriers” was carried out in a traditional manner.
The Sea Harrier flies for the last time in active service. This picture shows it flying above the Indian flag as a symbolic reminder that the Aircraft protected the country 24 X 7 while it was in active service.
The
legacy of the “White Tigers” lives on:
The MiG-29Ks have now
shouldered the responsibility of carrying on the legacy of the proud “White
Tigers”. INAS has been reequipped with the more lethal supersonic MiG-29K
fighter Aircraft giving the Squadron enhanced combat power and offensive
capabilities.
For the versatile “White
Tigers” the induction of the MiG–29Ks marks a full cycle from commissioning the
“Tail Hooking Sea Hawks” to the “Vectored Thrust” Sea Harrier era. The
induction of MiG-29Ks, to this elite squadron, marks the return of the “Tail
Hooking” Aircraft.
With
their professionalism, the White Tigers have assured control of the Skies and
by assuring air dominance for the carrier Battle group are a force to reckon
with. Their skills have been appreciated by many including foreign Navies as
well as the Indian Air Force.

released a First Day Cover (FDC) on behalf of the Maharashtra Postal Circle
Department of Posts, India commemorating the induction of the MiG–29 Ks and the
de-induction of the Sea Harriers in the INAS 300.
The Front of the Special
Cover on the top left shows the “tiger leaping above the waves” Insignia of the
INAS 300. A Flight of three MiG–29K aircraft are flying a sortie with the clouds
in the background and the Sea below them. A white Tiger looks at the viewer alert
and ready. The Rs.5/- stamp is from the International Fleet Review 2016 and
shows the aircraft Carrier Vikrant with a Naval Aircraft and a submarine
keeping a watch. The Cancellation stamp is inscribed “Bhartiya Nau Sena Jatha
300” (in Hindi) and “Indian Naval Air Squadron 300” (in English). The insignia
of the INAS 300 which shows a Tiger leaping across the waves is in the centre
of the Cancellation Stamp. The Cancellation
is of A.P. Dabolim and is dated “11.05.2016”.
The Back of the Special
Cover shows the “Tiger leaping over the waves” insignia of the INAS 300. There
is an inscription “INAS 300 Ke MiG-29K Ke Aavagaman tatha Sea-Harrier Ki Seva
Samapti Ke Avsar par” (in Hindi) and “To mark the induction of MiG-29K and
de-induction of Sea Harrier – INAS 300” (in English). The logo of India Post is
at the bottom left. In the centre is mentioned the issuing authority: “Dak
Vibhag, Maharashtra Dak Parimandal (in Hindi) and “Department of Posts, Maharashtra
Postal Circle” (in English). The approval for the Special Cover is given on the
top right: MH/18/2016.
