The above is an image of a
miniature sheet of stamps depicting two stamps Rs.5/-, depicting a Warli
Painting and Rs.20/-, depicting a Shekhawati painting.
The Miniature sheet bears
the inscription “Shekhawati region of Rajasthan is famous for frescos depicting
a gamut of subjects from mythological stories to local legends of battles and
hunts.
The tribal homes in
Maharashtra are decorated with Warli paintings depicting symbolic patterns
drawn on a background of red mud to seek the continued benevolence of gods.”
I have acquired the following two Special Covers from the epostoffice, New Delhi, which have reached me today (02.02.2017):
This is a Special Cover released at the "SHEKHAWATIPEX - 2016". On the left it shows Frescoes from the Painted Haveli of Shekhawati and is inscribed as such "Shekhawati Haveli Par Fresco Painting" (in Hindi) and "Frescoes - Painted Haveli of Shekhawati" (in English). In the background of the entire face of this envelope can be seen paintings from the Haveli (Bungalow).
The 500 Paise or Rs.5/- stamp at the top right is from a set of Stamps released in 2015 titled "Women's Empowerment". The Special Cancellation handstamp is inscribed "SHEKHAWATIPEX - 2016" and depicts Fresco Paintings. The Special Cancellation is of Jhunjunu GPO. The Cancellation is dated "04.11.2016".
The Back of the Special Cover is inscribed "Vishesh Aavaran:"Shekawati Haveli Par Ki Gayi Fresco Painting Ka Vihangam Drishya" (in Hindi) and "Panoramic View of Fresco Painted Haveli of Shekhawati (in English).
The Special Cancellation on the stamp depicts Fresco Paintings. In the background of the entire back face of this envelope can also be seen paintings from the Haveli (Bungalow).
This Special Cover has been approved by the Rajasthan Postal Circle of India Post. Only 1000 Special Covers depicting this design have been printed.

Shekhawati paintings – Origins:
Shekhawati paintings originated
from an erstwhile district or “nizamat”
of pre-Independence State of Dhunar or Jaipur. Wall paintings influenced by
Shekhawati styles were found in the palaces, forts and bungalows of the
Rajputs, Businessmen and Nawabs, as early as the 17th Century AD.
The earliest known paintings
in the Shekhawati style was the “Jaipur fresco” works, which involved
thick layers of pigment being applied and worked onto a wet plaster surface.
The
Shekhawati Styles over the centuries:
The painting styles found in
17th Century buildings show winged-head cherubs (from Baroque
Europe which have come through Europeans travelling to Goa and Surat), hatted
Persian angels, the pheasant-like simurgh (a mythical flying creature), cypress
trees, lotus bud decorations and the Sufi tales of the fabled lovers – Laila
and Majnu which have all been inter-mixed/intergrated with popular Hindu
religious and folk themes. Most of the early murals are painted in red, yellow
and green ochres as well as, they exhibit the use of copper carbonate and red
and white lead. The painters were mostly gifted and self-taught men who began
their careers as “chiretas” (potters)
and “chejaras” (masons). The
paintings were depicted in bright two-dimensional artwork. The chejaras used
natural colours for their art, like “kajal”
(lamp black) for black colour, “safeda”
(lime) for white, “neel” (indigo) for
blue, “geru” (red stone powder) for
red, “kesar” (saffron) for orange, “pevri” (yellow clay) for yellow ochre et
al. Mixed with limewater and made into a plaster, these colours remained
vibrant and lustrous for ages.
In the 18th
Century, several rulers and influential businessmen had temples and “chhatris” (which were mostly memorials
to war heroes who died in battle) erected which were richly decorated in the
Shekhawati painting styles and figurative paintings. There were painted frescos
in several rooms of Rajasthani forts depicting themes of stylised portraits,
hunting scenes, folk tales and historic battles, particularly the Battle of
Maonda and Mandholi (fought between the Jat rulers of Bharatpur and the Rajput
rulers of Amer, Jaipur in 1767). Among religious themes depicted in these
paintings were incarnations of Lord Vishnu (mostly Lord Ram and Lord Krishna)
or Lord Shiva, Ganesh and Goddess Durga. A few local deities were also
represented.
During the 19th
and early 20th Centuries Shekhawati wall paintings were at their
zenith and were routinely being depicted in wall frescos in the Buildings or “Havelis”, in temples, in “Chhatri” memorials, in “Caravan Sarais” (inns). Stylised plants
or plant-like arabesques, architectural features and geometric patterns were
often infused in the panels and friezes. Muralists began to add motor cars,
trains, bicycles, horse driven carriages, gramophones etc to the older themes. Photography
also assisted the painters who drew inspiration from photos in their artwork. Around
this time, Shekhawati paintings also acquired three dimensional characters with
the use of shadow.
The
techniques:
At
the initial stages:
The pigment was
very often incised scraperboard-like
(scraper-board or scratchboard is an illustrative technique which uses sharp
knives and tools for etching into a thin layer of white China clay, coated with
black India ink. Sometimes, several layers of multi-coloured clay are applied)
with geometric and floral designs. The interior work is usually painted secco (this is a wall painting
technique where pigments mixed with an organic binder and lime are applied onto
a dry plaster), using tempera (tempera
is a permanent fast-drying painting medium consisting of coloured pigments
mixed with a water-soluble binder medium – which is usually a glutinous
material such as egg yolk) onto dry
plaster.
At
the later stages:
Fusion techniques
developed during the later part of Shekhawati paintings evolution and in the 18th
Century, artists experimented with chemical dyes instead of natural ones, which
resulted in much finer work. Oil murals
were produced by a series of impressions of stone or metal plates (through a lithographic process), with the
impression of each plate being in a different colour. The finished product
resembled oil paintings on canvas.
The fusion of these two
mediums – natural and chemical – and the integration of modern themes into
old school Shekhawati paintings really turned this style of painting into a
unique school of art.
