Wild India – Mammals: (Part I): A set of 48 Post Cards issued by Karnataka

Bio-Diversity Decade 2011-2020:
“Bio-diversity is
important at every level. We live in a complex system where every living being
depends on every other in some or the other way. It is important that we
actively pursue a clear and current understanding of the system in which we
live, in order to sustain it.”
Mammals:
The Mammals are a class of vertebrate animals characterised by the presence of
mammary glands, the presence of hair or fur, specialised teeth, the presence of
a neo-cortex region in the brain and endothermic or “warm-blooded” bodies.
The brain regulates endothermic
and circulatory system, including a four-chambered heart.
In India, there are 410
species, 168 genera, 45 families and 13 orders of which nearly 89 species are
listed as “Threatened” in the International Union for Conservation of Nature
and Natural Resources (IUCN 2006).
Bovidae:
The
Bovidae are the biological family of cloven-hoofed, ruminant
mammals that includes bison, African buffalo, water buffalo, antelopes,
gazelles, sheep, goats, muskoxen, and domestic cattle. A member of this family
is called a bovid.
The
biological subfamily Bovinae
includes a diverse group of 10 genera of medium to large-sized ungulates,
including domestic cattle, bison,
African buffalo, the water buffalo, the yak, and the four-horned and
spiral-horned antelopes.
Blackbuck
(Antilope cervicapra):
The Blackbuck is an ungulate
species of antelope, native to the Indian sub-continent. The native population
is stable, with an estimated 50,000 individuals.
The Blackbuck is the only
living species of the genus Antilope. They are primarily grazers and avoid
forested areas. They require water every day and may move long distances in
search of water and forage in summer. Usually, they feed during the day.

Tibetan
Argali or the “Asian Wild Sheep” (Ovis
ammon hodgsoni):
This is the largest
species of wild sheep in the world. It is one of the eight recognised
sub-species of the Argali. It is found throughout the Tibetan Plateau,
including in regions of Nepal and Sikkim and Ladakh in India that are close to
the Tibetan border.
In the winter, the Argali
tends to migrate to lower elevations or to less snowy areas. Tibetan Argali
forages on grasses, herbs, sedges and shrubs.

Himalayan
Tahr (Hermitragus jemlahicus):
This is a large ungulate
native to the Himalayas in Southern Tibet, Northern India and Nepal. In the
Himalayas, they are mainly found on slopes ranging from 2,500 to 5,000 metres.
Himalayan Tahr can eat a wide variety of plants. They mostly inhabit locations
where vegetation is exposed for browsing and grazing. During the winter, they
are found on lower-altitude slopes. The life-span of a Himalayan Tahr typically
ranges around 14 or 15 years, with females living longer than males.

Tibetan
Antelope or “Chiru” (Pantholops hodgsoni):
This is a medium sized
bovid, native to the Tibetan Plateau. They are found almost entirely in China,
a few are also found across the border in Ladakh, India. Fewer than 75,000
individuals are left in the wild. They are hunted for their soft and warm wool
which is usually obtained after their death. This wool is known as “shahtoosh” and is used to weave shawls.
At present, international trade in their products is strictly prohibited.

Wild
Buffalo or “Asian Buffalo” (Bubalu amee):
The wild water buffalo is
a large bovine native to the Indian Sub-continent and South-East Asia. The
global population has been estimated at 3,400 individuals of which 3,100 (or
about 91%) lie in India, mostly in Assam. The wild water buffalos are both
diurnal and nocturnal. Adult females and their young form stable clans of as
many as 30 individuals, which are led by old cows, even when bulls accompany
the group.

Chinese
Goral (Nemorhaedus griseus):
This is an intermediate
between an antelope and a goat. Its range extends from North-Eastern India,
Myanmar and North-Western Thailand, through Northern Vietnam and possibly
Northern Laos, to most of China.
It is a mountain species
and is found in rugged, inaccessible areas, on steep slopes and plateaus,
normally staying in rocky areas, but sometimes venturing into nearby
evergreen-deciduous forest and mixed woodland.

Vulnerable (VU)
Markhor
(Capra falconeri):
This is a large species of
wild goat that is found in North-eastern Afghanistan, Northern and Central
Pakistan, Kashmir, Southern Tajikistan and Southern Uzbekistan.
Markhor are adapted to
mountainous terrain and can be found between 600 and 3,600 metres in elevation.
They typically inhabit scrub forests. They are diurnal and are mainly active in
the early morning and late afternoon. Currently, only three sub-species of
Markhor are recognised by the IUCN.
The Astor Markhor (Capra falconeri falconeri) has large,
flat horns, branching out very widely and then going up nearly straight with
only a half turn.
In India, this sub-species
is restricted to a portion of the Pir Panjal range in South-western Jammu and
Kashmir.

Himalayan
Goral (Naemorhedus goral):
The Himalayan goral is a
bovid species found in most of the Southern slopes of the Himalayas from Jammu
and Kashmir to Eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
In India and Nepal they
are present at elevations from 900 to 2,750 metres.
This animal is
crepuscular, being most active in the early morning and late evening. After a
morning meal, it often drinks and then rests on a rock ledge through the day.
It feeds on leaves and associated softer parts of plants, mainly grasses.

Nilgiri
Tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius):
This is endemic to the
Nilgiri Hills and the Southern portion of the Western Ghats, in the states of
Tamil Nadu and Kerala in Southern India. It is the state animal of Tamil Nadu.
It is more closely related to the sheep of the Ovis genus than the Ibex and wild goats of the Capra genus.
The Nilgiri Tahr inhabits
the open montane grassland habitat of the South-western Ghats, locally known as
“Sholas” at elevations from 1,200 to
2,600 metres surrounded by dense forests at the lower elevations. The current
population is around 3,000 individuals.

Gayal
or “Mithun” (Bos frontalis):
This is a large
semi-domesticated bovine distributed in North-east India, Bangladesh, Northern
Burma and in Yunnan, China.
Gayals are essentially
inhabitants of hill-forests. In India, semi-domesticated gayals are kept by
several ethnic groups living in the hills of Tripura, Mizoram, Assam, Arunachal
Pradesh and Nagaland. Gayals play an important role in the social life of the
people of Arunachal Pradesh.
Marriages are not fixed
until the bridegroom’s family gives at least one Gayal to the bride’s family.

Chinkara:
The Chinkara is known as
the Indian gazelle and is native to Iran, Pakistan and India. It stands at 65
cms (or 26 inches) tall and weighs about 23 kg (or 51 Lbs).
Chinkara live in rid
plains and hills, deserts, dry scrub and light forests. The Chinkara population
stands upwards of 100,000 individuals, with around 4/5th of them
living in the Thar Desert. Chinkaras are shy and avoid human habitation. They
can go without water for long periods and can get sufficient fluids from plants
and dew. Although most are seen alone, they can sometimes be spotted in groups
of up to four animals.

Mishmi
Takin (Budorcas taxicolor taxicolor):
This is an endangered
goat-antelope native to India, Myanmar and the People’s Republic of China. It
is a sub-species of takin. It eats
bamboo and willow shoots. It has an oily coat to protect it from the fog. In
India, it is found in Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh.

Red
Goral (Naemorhedus baileyi):
This is a species of
even-toed ungulate in the sub-family Caprinae
in the family Bovidae. It is found in
Northern Myanmar, China (South-east Tibet and Yunnan) and North-east India
(Arunachal Pradesh). This species is found at higher elevations than most
gorals, between altitudes of 2,000 to 4,500 metres.
Red gorals are most active
during the day and tend to retreat to inaccessible cliffs at night, where they
sleep on sheltered ledges. They are strong climbers and jumpers and seek safety
from predators by fleeing up cliffs. The predators of the red goral are jackals
and leopards.

Tibetan
Gazelle (Procapra picticaudata):
This is a species of
antelope that inhabits the Tibetan Plateau. Small populations exist in the
Ladakh and Sikkim Regions of India. In Ladakh, they live at high altitudes
(15,580 – 16,570 feet), but prefer relatively flat areas with an affinity for warmer,
South facing slopes. They co-exist with domestic yaks and kiang. The population
in Ladakh is less than 100 individuals.

Bhuran
Takin (Budorcas taxicolor whitei):
This is a goat antelope native
to Bhutan, North Eastern India, Western part of China and Tibet. In Bhutan,
they are found in bamboo forests at altitudes of 1,000 to 4,500 metres, where
they eat grass, buds and leaves. They are active in the day, resting in the
heat on particularly sunny days. Takin gather in small herds in winter and
herds of up to a hundred individuals in the summer. In winter, they move to
lower elevations and split into smaller herds of 10-50 individuals.

Nilgai
(Boselaphus tragocamelus):
Nilgai is the largest
Asian antelope. It is one of the most commonly seen wild mammals of Central and
Northern India., often seen in farmland or scrub forest.
The mature male appears
ox-like and is also known as the “blue bull” Nilgai are diurnal and tend to
form single-sex herds outside of the breeding season. Nerds are not of fixed
composition, with individuals joining and rejoining throughout the year. Female
herds typically contain 3 to 6 adults, together with their calves, whereas
bulls form herds of 2 to 18 individuals.
