that is the logo of the CFC 2017. Further below is mentioned “Van Anusandhan Sansthan, Dehradun” (in
Hindi) and “Forest Research Institute, Dehradun (in English). On the top right
is a 500 Paise or Rs.5/- stamp commemorating the Tadoba National Park and
(Tiger) Reserve. The cancellation hand-stamp is titled “19th
Commonwealth Forestry Conference, 3-7 April 2017” and “Van Anusandhan Sansthan, Dehradun” (in Hindi) and “Forest Research
Institute, Dehradun (in English).on the upper and lower peripheries. In the

About
the Forest Research Institute:
In 1878, the Forest
Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun was set up as a small forest school
to impart training to forest rangers.
In 1884, this
school was taken over by the Central Government and named the “Imperial
Forest Research Institute” which formed the nucleus of the present FRI.
By the beginning of the 20th
Century, the school became an institution with a fine museum, herbarium
collections, labs and an instructive arboretum.
In 1906, research
departments were added to the school and its name was changed again to “Imperial
Forest Research Institute and Colleges” – by this time it was having
several centres located at different parts of the country administering
research and imparting training to Forest Officers and Forest Rangers.
In 1928, the
Institute was shifted to another building.
A formal inauguration
of the Institute was done on 07.11.1929 by the then Viceroy of India at
its new location at the New Forest Campus.
In 1938, officers
recruited to the Superior Forest Service by the States and Provinces were
trained there.
After reorganisation of
Forestry Research in the country and creation of Indian Council of Forestry
Research and Education (ICFRE) in 1988, the training and research
centres were given independent status as institutes.
In December 1991,
the Forest Research Institute was brought under the umbrella of ICFRE and
conferred the status of a Deemed University.
The building itself was
built in the Greco-Roman architectural style over a period of seven
years at a huge sum of Rs.90 lacs for those days.
Its Greco-Roman and
Oriental architecture is spread over a plinth area of 2.8 Hectares. The FRI
campus is spread over 500 hectares.
The vast and imposing
corridors of this beautiful building bring back memories of the valuable
observations made by the pioneer forest officers during their tours in the
far-flung forests of India. Their informal and frequent forays into the domain
of scientific forestry provided the foundation on which the edifice of forestry
research has been built in India.
The FRI presently has a museum
on forestry which has six sections situated in the main building –
Pathology Museum, Social Forestry Museum, Entomology Museum, Silviculture
Museum, Timber Museum and Non-Wood Forest Products Museum.
The
main building has been designated as a National Heritage site.
Visitors from all over the
world visit the FRI campus and marvel at the beauty and grandeur of its
edifice.
The FRI celebrated 75
years (platinum Jubilee) of its inauguration day and shifting to its final
location at New Forest Campus (set up in 1929) during 2004.
Our
personal visit to the FRI in 2009:
In 2009, both Sumita and I
visited Dehradun and stayed with our dear friends Mr. and Mrs. Rama Shanker
Sharma whose residence was very close to the FRI, which provided us an
opportunity to go bird spotting in the vast campus of the FRI during our
morning walks every day. We also visited the Forestry museum at the FRI.
I remember that my uncle who
was a Major with the Brigade of the Guards was posted as an Instructor at the
Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun in the 1970s. When we visited him, I
remember that I had got an opportunity to sit in an old captured Patton tank which
was on display at the IMA during our tour of the IMA. Like Calvin & Hobbes
cartoons, I let my imagination run wild while sitting inside the tank,
imagining that I was in a spaceship and exploring “uncharted stars/planets”
destroying aliens whom I encountered along the way.
My uncle also took us to
the FRI where we also got to see the Forestry Museum. I particularly remembered
standing in front of a cross-section of an old tree which was much larger in
size than me.
So, as soon as I entered
the FRI campus museum during our visit in 2009, I went hunting for this huge
tree cross-section. You can imagine my happiness when I actually spotted it in
one of the museums. I wouldn’t move from the spot till I had got Sumita to take
a photograph of me standing before this giant cross section of the tree.

In this picture, you
can see me pointing gleefully at having located the tree cross-section. It was still
in the same spot where I had seen it for the first time in the 1970s, some four
decades ago. An old memory had been supplemented by a fresh one.
The rings on this tree cross-section denote the age of the tree. The description reads - "Section of Deodar Tree (Cedrus Deodara), Age 704 years. Mean radiun 140 cms. From: Balcha Tons Forest Division".

About
the XIX Commonwealth Forestry Conference- 2017 (CFC 2017) held from 03.04.2017
to 07.04.2017 at the FRI:
The Commonwealth
Forestry Conferences have a long history dating back to 1920,
when the first Forestry Conference was held in London.
Since then, these
conferences have been held regularly to discuss various aspects of
management of forests and focus action on the changing priorities of the
forestry sector.
The world today is undergoing
rapid socio-economic and technological changes, which have implications for
the forest and environment sector, in turn affecting the ecological, economic
and social well-being of the people.
The
forestry sector must keep pace and adapt to these changes.
In April 2017,
members of 53 sovereign nations who together comprise the Commonwealth
were represented in the Commonwealth Forestry Conference – 2017, held at the
Forest Research Institute, Dehradun from 03.04.2017 to 07.04.2017 with the
ICFRE and FRI being the focal point of the Conference with the support of the
Ministry of External affairs (MOEF) and CC Government of India and Commonwealth
Forestry Association (CFA).
The participants came
together to share experiences with a view to learn and develop a vision for
the future based on inclusive and sustainable growth and development,
particularly in view of the fact that an explosive growth in the human
population is bringing about degradation, deforestation at an alarming rate,
thereby resulting in drastic climate and environmental changes.
The major theme of
the Conference was “Forests for
Prosperity and Posterity”.
The
key sub-themes of the Conference were:
Biodiversity conservation
and management
Livelihood and economic
security from forests
Diversification, multiple
use and sustainable harvest
Good governance in
forestry
Forests and climate change
Forest and water
The
chief objectives of the Conference were:
To serve as a key forum
for all those concerned with the forestry sector to share their experience and
pave the way for effective translation of forestry research into actions for
its sustainability.
Provide a platform to
encourage and strengthen forestry research and development for the benefit
of the people and industry that depend on forests and related sectors for their
economic and social well being.
Identify and address critical
issues in the management of forests for the sustenance of rural, tribal and
indigenous communities.
To provide a stage
for all the stakeholders to collaborate over the better management of forests
and ensure food, water and energy security, thereby contributing to the global Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs).
The keynote speakers who
addressed the participants were from several countries including Nairobi.
Canada, Jamaica, England/Scotland, FAO headquarters Rome, British Columbia
(Canada), Australia, Kenya, World Bank and India.
