693) "The Earth and Beyond Series": Royal Australian Mint (RAM) issues the first coin in the Series, a Silver Coloured Five Dollars concave-shaped (Domed) coin - the Earth - on 03.04.2018:

The Royal Australian Mint (RAM) has launched a new coin series which features the planets in our solar system. The first coin in the series highlights our own home planet - the Earth - and how it may appear to observers in outer space. Apart from the eight planets, a coin on the Sun is also proposed to be brought out, making the total coins issued/to be issued in the series - nine.

Since ancient times humans have been fascinated with the objects in the skies, wondering and marvelling at their sheer spans - the Moon, planets, comets, asteroids etc - and pin-pointing/discovering the planets in our very own solar system. We now have a greater understanding of our own solar system thanks to the extra-ordinary explorer spacecraft launched into outer space that relay interesting information and vital findings about our planetary neighbours.

The Reverse of the 5 Dollars Silver Coin as it would be seen from near outer space from a nearby planet

As a species, humans alone have observed their home planet in its entirety from space - Earth - the pale blue shimmering cradle of life.

As humans look to send a manned landing craft on the planet Mars within the next decade or so, the "space race" and the ability to develop an "Earth Colony" on the "red planet" gets more and more realistic and exciting.

The Coin issued by the Royal Australian Mint:

The Reverse of the Concave (Dome shaped) 5 Dollars Silver Coin

The Reverse includes a vivid colour depiction of the Earth, along with a representation of a satellite in orbit around it. The Earth is surrounded by star shapes and directional co-ordinates. The text on the outer periphery reads - "2018. THE EARTH AND BEYOND - THE EARTH - FIVE DOLLARS".  The layers of the atmosphere are also labelled starting from the outer circle - " EXOSPHERE, THERMOSPHERE, MESOSPHERE, STRATOSPHERE and TROPOSPHERE".

(The Exosphere extends from 700 to 10,000 kilometres (or 440 to 6,200 miles), the Thermosphere extends from 80 to 700 kms (or 50 to 440 miles), Mesosphere from 50 to 80 kms (or 31 to 50 miles), Stratosphere extends from 12 to 50 kms (or 7 to 31 miles) and Troposphere from 0 to 12 kms (or 0 to 7 miles).
The Obverse of the Concave (Dome shaped) 5 Dollars Silver Coin

The Obverse of the coin depicts an effigy of Elizabeth II designed by Ian-Rank Broadley, whose initials "IRB" appear below her neck. The effigy is placed in a central motif around which the eight planets are seen in orbits. The Central motif represents the Sun.

The inscription in the centre of the design are - "ELIZABETH II . AUSTRALIA. ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER".

The specifications of the coin are :

Denomination: 5 Dollars; Metal Composition: .999 Silver (Ag.); Weight: 31.1 grams or 1 Oz.; Diameter/Size: 39.62 mm; Coin Quality: Proof with applied colour; Maximum mintage: 5,000 pieces.
