The National Bank of the Czech Republic has brought out a 200 Koruna Silver coin to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of one of the country's oldest cartographic memories - the Klaudyan Map - whose origin dates back to 1518.

During the period of 500 years, the creation of this earliest map of Bohemia  is considered to be a great source of invaluable information from the beginning of the 16th Century on the territories comprising Czech lands.

This extraordinary map was the work of the versatile scholar Mikulas Klaudyan who lived in Mlada Boleslav at that time. He started his work as a doctor and pharmacist, but then focussed himself on the printing art, which he considered to be a break-through for spreading important ideas.

His work led to the oldest printed map of Bohemia, which was published in 1518. The ratio of the scale is 1:6850000. An interesting feature of this map was that it covered the country's entire area on a one sheet.

This was not an ordinary map, but an allegorical letter enriched with the period reflection of the relations seen by the followers of the Protestant unity of the brethren.

The upper part of the map consists of the picture of King Louis II of Hungary and Bohemia with the emblems of his lands, the allegory of justice, coats of arms of the highest dignitaries and three important royal cities - Prague, Kutna Hora and Zatec. The map itself, which is South-up, records about 280 towns and castles and also depicts forests, mountains, rivers and roads.

The actual map, which served as a guide for pilgrims travelling to Rome, is the focus of the illustrations at the bottom third of the print. The upper two-thirds is dedicated to social, moral and religious scenes.

In the middle of the map sheet is a picture symbolising Czech religious disunity, with the most striking being the graphics of a wagon filled with angry passengers that are depicted facing in both directions -  symbolising the religious division of the country and its tumultuous political climate of the time.
