Philippines presently has the following coin series which is in circulation: Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Coin Series 1995-present).
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) - the Central Bank of the Philippines has now brought out on 26.03.2018, six new circulation coins under the "New Generation Coin Series (NGC)", which are in the denominations of 10, 5 and 1 Piso and 25, 5 and 1 Sentimo.

The "NGC Coin Series" design features enhanced aesthetic and security to discourage counterfeiters. In particular, micro-printed details using laser-engraving technology have been introduced in the two highest denominated coins - 10 Piso and 5 Piso, which make it difficult for these coins to be duplicated using traditional coin counterfeiting methods/tools. The metallic composition of the NGC coins also discourages the illegal practice of hoarding large quantities of coins for the extraction of their metal content.
The six coins, which appear as "metallic silver" are made from durable nickel-plated steel that possesses a very good wear and corrosion resistance. The change in the material addresses concerns about discolouration, predominantly observed for copper-based metals.
Coins in the NGC Series feature the new BSP logo, three National heroes (Apolinario Mabini (10 Piso Coin), Andres Bonafacio (5 Piso Coin) and Jose Rizal (1 Piso Coin), a stylised three stars and a sun in the 25, 5 and 1 Sentimo and endemic flora consistent with the design of the NGC Banknote Series which highlights Philippine fauna.
The difference between the NGC coins and the existing BSP Coin Series is best appreciated through visual means and tactile familiarisation.
The existing coins (BSP Coin Series) will continue to be legal tender alongside the NGC Coin Series, until such time, it is demonetised by the Central Bank.
The NGC coins will be launched on 03.07.2017 to coincide with the 24th anniversary of the Central Bank - which was established on 03.07.1993.

The Obverse and Reverse of the 10 Piso NGC Coin
On the Obverse of the 10 Piso NGC Coin is a portrait of Apolinario Mabini, the issuing country name "REPUBLIKA ng PIliPINAS", year of issue "2018", mint mark and "Republika ng Pilipinas" microprint.
Apolinario Mabini: (23.07.1864 - 13.05.1903): He was a Filipino revolutionary leader, educator, lawyer and statesman who served first as a legal and constitutional adviser to the Revolutionary Government, and then as the first Prime Minister of the Philippines in the First Philippines Republic. He is regarded as the "utak ng himagsikan" or "brain of the revolution".
On the Reverse of the 10 Piso NGC Coin are seen "KAPA-KAPA' plant, the BSP logo, "Bangko ng Pilipinas" microprint and micro-dots.
Kapa-Kapa plant ("Medinilla magnifica"): is endemic to Philippines and favours cool and shaded growing environment like in Mount Makiling. Kapa-Kapa has become exceedingly rare in its natural environment/habitat and is included in the list of endangered species.
The other specifications of the coin include: Diameter: 27.0 mm; Edge: milled with a reeded edge lettering "Bangko ng Pilipinas"; Colour: Silver.

Andres Bonifacio (1863-1897): He is remembered in Philippine history for instigating the uprising of August 1896 against Spanish Rule .
This was the first coin issued in the NGC Series in 2017 on Andres Bonifacio's 154th birthday.
Tayabak ("Strongilodon Macrobotrys") plant: is commonly known as the jade vine and is a native of the tropical forests of the Philippines, with stems that can reach 18 metres in length.

Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (19.06.1861 - 30.12.1896): was a Filipino Nationalist and polymath during the fag end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. An ophthalmologist by profession, Rizal was a writer and key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement which advocated political reforms for the colony under spain.
He was executed by the Spanish colonial government for the crime of rebellion after the Philippine Revolution broke out, inspired in part by his writings .

It is an excellent material for the bearing or stern bushing of a steam-ship's propeller shaft. Its other uses are rollers, shears, saw guide blocks, tool handles, novelties, poles and piles for wharves and bridges and posts for houses. It is threatened by habitat loss. and its present status is rare and endangered.
