1) Leeuwarden, Netherlands: "European Capital of Culture- 2018"

The European Capital of Culture is a city which is designated by the European Union (EU) for a period of one year during which it organises a series of cultural events with a strong pan-European dimension.

Preparing a European Capital of Culture is an opportunity for the city to generate considerable cultural, social and economic benefits and it can help foster urban regeneration, change the city's image and raise its visibility and profile on an international scale.

In 1985, Melina Mercouri, Greece's minister of cultural affairs and her French counter-part Jack Lang mooted the idea of designating an annual "Capital of Culture" to bring Europeans closer together by highlighting the richness and diversity of European cultures and raising awareness of their common history and values.

The Commission of the European Union manages the title and each year the Council of Ministers of the European Union formally designates European Capitals of Culture. So far, more than 40 cities have been designated "Capitals of Culture".

The City of Valletta, Malta - designated as European "Capital of Culture - 2018", along with Leeuwarden, Netherlands:

The Valletta - 2018 Foundation is responsible for the implementation of the Cultural Programme. As per ECoC regulations set by the EU, the Cultural Programme is to promote a European dimension and encourage citizen participation. Valletta - 2018 will enable the participation of the citizens of Malta and Europe and will form an integral and sustainable part of the long-term social, economic and cultural development of Malta. The Cultural Programme is built around four themes - Generations, Routes, Cities and Islands. In conjunction with the Cultural Programme, the Foundation will embark upon a programme of consistent, accessible and comparable research and evaluation directly linked to culture.

Despite a limited budget of 10 million Euros, the Maltese cultural calendar is full with 140 projects and 400 events planned for the entire year in and around Valletta.

Valletta's Baroque architecture and the Mediterranean are the main themes of the cultural programmes.

The programme is designed in a manner, that its impact will be felt throughout the whole Maltese territory.

The "European Year of Cultural Heritage - 2018" is also being celebrated in Malta, with the "unique heritage of the Maltese islands".
