The Garden of Destiny National Monument/Freedom Project:

The Freedom Monument honours the 600,000 citizens of  Latvia who suffered and perished under totalitarian regimes during the 20th Century.

On 07.06.2005, a group of dedicated persons assembled to establish a foundation to pursue further initiatives for the purpose of setting up the monument. The Koknese Foundation, was set up with an initial capital of 640,000 Euros to create a memorial site to symbolise the country's grief for the victims, commemorating their lives and resilience and also to serve as an inspiration to everyone to stand up and fight for a better life for all.  Since then, more than 2.5 million Euros have been invested in the project.

The Garden of Destiny is emerging on an island in the Daugava River near Koknese. This picturesque area is a cross-roads of cultural and historical diversity of the peoples of Zemgale, Selija and Vidzeme, where threads  of Latvian history and mythology are woven together and intersect.

The designer of the Garden of Destiny concept and winner of the international competition held to design the project was Shunmyu Masuna - a Japanese architect.

The landscape envisaged by him gradually transforms the visitor's grief and sorrow into a reflective healing of the soul, encouraging people to readily meet and embrace the promise of the future, embodied by timeless light, wind, water and earth.

The Island, steeped in historic significance is marked by a section of the ancient Riga-Moscow road that became scarred by the dugouts of World War I. The remains of the medieval Koknese Castle, once built by German Knights, emerges over the river and the medieval trade route.

The observation terrace and amphitheatre have now been completed and are surrounded by 40 oak trees and a canal. The site is reached by a cobblestone avenue, which is lined with apple trees on both sides nd 2,600 other trees donated by the Latvijas valsts mezi and the Latvian Plant Growers Association.

Since the concept was first proposed, tens of thousands of persons have contributed to creating up of the Garden of Destiny - either by donating funds or lending a hand.

The number of project supporters now exceeds 500,000 and visitors from over 55 countries have come to the memorial site.

The Garden of Destiny is being nurtured as the country's present to itself on its Centenary Anniversary as an independent state being celebrated in 2018.

The Freedom Monument is Latvian's legacy from the generations of the previous century and is also a legacy for Latvia's future generations.

The Reverse of the 5 Euro Silver Coin shows the graphic design  titled "LIKTENDARZS 2018" (meaning "The Garden of Destiny") which is inscribed on the lower periphery. The design is inspired by the amphitheatre of the Garden of Destiny - which is the primary focal point of the project and is enclosed by the Daugava River waters.

The denomination of the coin "5 EURO" is seen on the top right periphery.

The design is highlighted with colour printing emphasising the blue of the water and the green of the actual garden.

The  Obverse of the 5 Euro Coin reflects human faces with an array of their stylised representations spaced around the overall surface, somewhat resembling the leaves on a tree, emphasising the greenery and array of trees in the garden. The country name "LATVIJA" appears on the lower periphery.
