About the Royal Academy of Arts:

The Royal Academy of Arts (RA) is a charity that serves to promote art and artists. It is an independent body and does not receive funding from the Government, instead it relies entirely/wholly on the support of the visitors, friends, patrons, donors and sponsors.

It was founded in 1768 and its mission is to promote the enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and give a platform for artists. It runs public exhibitions and gives talks, encouraging debates to further these aims.

The RA also funds a post-graduate Art School, which serves to train new generations of artists and which is the oldest art school in the UK.

The RA is based in Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, where building work has been going on to unite the existing buildings and provide a 250 seat auditorium, a learning centre, as well as, new galleries for the RA's art collection. This composite building is due to open sometime in 2018.

Many of the world's most successful exhibitions have taken place at the Academy, attracting up to one million visitors annually.

The Annual Summer Exhibition:

The RA's most famous exhibition - the Annual Summer Exhibition - is the largest open submission of its type in the world, attracting thousands of works from the public. It has been held every year uninterrupted since 1769 and is co-ordinated by a Royal Academician. It provides both emerging and established artists a unique platform to showcase their work in a variety of mediums. Most works are for sale, giving visitors the opportunity to own original art-works. by leading artists of today and tomorrow, with the proceeds allowing the RA to continue providing free, world-class post-graduate tuition in its schools.

During 2018, The Summer Exhibition will run from 12.06.2018 to 19.08.2018 and will be co-ordinated by Grayson Perry.

The Commemorative stamps:

The Royal Mail has commemorated the 250th Anniversary of the establishment of the RA with the issue of a set of six special stamps designed in co-ordination with six RA members, including Grayson Perry, giving their personal portrayal of the annual Summer Exhibition.
