The National Bank of Kazakhstan has issued 5,000 Tenge silver kilo coins along with 500 Tenge Silver coins and 100 Tenge Cupro-Nickel coins to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the inauguration of Kazakhstan's capital city - Astana, which came into effect on 06.05.1998.

Astana was originally established as a settlement called Akmoly (in Russian it was called "Akmolinsky prikaz"), located on the banks of the Ishim River within the Agmola Region, when it served as a fortification for Siberian Cossacks.
In 1932, the Settlement was granted the status of a town and renamed Akmolinsk.
On 20.03.1961, the city was renamed Tselinograd to mark the city's evolution as a cultural and administrative centre of the "Virgin Lands Campaign".
This was part of a project initiated by the then General Secretary - Nikita Khrushchev in 1953 with a view to dramatically boost the Soviet Union's agricultural production in order to alleviate the food shortages plaguing the Soviet population.
In 1992, after Independence, when the USSR disintegrated into independent states, the city was again renamed Agmola, which was the modified original name meaning "white grave".
On 10.12.1997, Agmola replaced Agmaty as the capital of Kazakhstan.
On 06.05.1998, the city underwent another hange in its name and got its present name - Astana - which translates as "capital city" in the Kazakh language.
The modern city of Astana has developed in the nature of a planned city and it is a community that was carefully constructed since its inception and has developed on previously undeveloped green space. After Astana became the capital city of Kazakhstan rapidly developed rapidly as the seat of the government of Kazakhstan, which includes the Parliament House, the Supreme Court, the Agorda Presidential Palace and several other government departments and agencies. Modern Astana is also, home to several futuristic buildings, hotels and sky-scrapers, apart from its excellent and extensive healthcare facilities, sport and institutions of higher learning.

The Commemorative Coins:
The Obverses of 100 Tenge Cupro-Nickel Coin and 500 and 5,000 Tenge Silver Coins show a collage of some famous Astana buildings and its skyline.
In the upper half of the coin design on the upper periphery is inscribed "ACTAHA" (In Kazakh language, standing for "ASTANA") and is depicted a stylised sky, which is created with a holographic image seen on the silver coins.
In the lower half of the coin is the numeral "20". The design also includes a traditional geometric pattern within the number. The words "XKBIA" (meaning "years" is placed below the numeral. On the lower periphery is mentioned the commemorative years "1998-2018".
The Reverse of the 100 Tenge Coin and 500 Tenge and 5,000 Tenge Silver Coins shows the emblem of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
On the coin's periphery is the denomination of 100 Tenge, 500 Tenge or 5,000 Tenge in the national language. Also mentioned is the name of the issuing country "REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN".
The silver coins contain additional text which denotes their weight and fineness at the top of the design - Ag 925 1 Kg or Ag 925 31.1 grams.
