The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), (the Central Association which governs and regulates the issue of Banknotes from the three authorised Commercial Banks and issues Currency Banknotes in the City State), has commenced the process of  issuing new Banknotes, in the denominations of 1,000 and 500 dollars and released the themes for the remaining denominations which would be brought into circulation in a phased manner.

The HKMA regulates the issue of Banknotes from the Note issuing Banks (or NIB's), which include the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), the Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) and the Bank of China (BOC) who issue currency notes on behalf of the HKMA.

Interestingly, the Banknotes in the denominations of 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 dollars all share or correspond to the same colour and technical specifications for each denomination, but differ in the design and banking logo (or "trademark"), which allows easy recognition by the users.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the three Note issuing Banks have unified the design concept of each denomination of the  2018 Series of Banknotes and have selected themes that are close to the hearts of the Hong Kong citizens.

The selected themes of the various denominations of Banknotes represent different aspects of Hong Kong as an international metropolis - featuring its rhythm of life, recreation and entertainment - as well as, its rich natural and cultural heritage.

The themes for the five denominations are:

The Front of the HK$1000 Banknotes being issued by the 3 Banknote issuing Banks

The Back of the HK$1000 Banknotes being issued by the 3 Banknote issuing Banks

HK$1,000 - (Theme) : Hong Kong's flourishing financial services industry represented through the  International Financial Centre. The colour of this Banknote is Orange and its size is 81.5 x 163.0 mm; The HK$1,000 Banknotes are scheduled to go into circulation by end 2018.

HK$500 - (Theme) : Hong Kong spectacular UNESCO Global Geopark. The colour of this Banknote is Brown and its size is 79.0 mm x 158.0 mm; The HK$500 Banknotes are likely to go into circulation in early 2019.

(These three denominations of HK$100, HKD$50 and HK$20 are likely to be issued into circulation between 2019 and 2020 and their actual dates of release will be announced sometime in the middle of 2019).

For an aesthetic presentation of the theme, and easy distinction from all the previous Series, the Back of the Banknotes will be printed in a vertical orientation, instead of the traditional horizontal layout.

The 2018 Series of Banknotes will essentially retain the size and colour schemes of the presently circulating Banknote Series, along with the accessibility features for the visually impaired users to differentiate the denominations.

The 2018 Series will incorporate advanced security features, which are effective and easily recognisable.

All existing Banknotes will continue to remain legal tender and will continue to circulate along with the 2018 Series.

Main Security Features:

The new Banknote Series will have the following main Security features:

Dynamic Shimmering Pattern -  When the Banknote is tilted, a shimmering ring in the pattern moves correspondingly.

Windowed Metallic Thread - When the Banknote is tilted, large and small rings on the Metallic thread move correspondingly.

Enhanced Watermark - The theme of the Bauhinia Flower is used ,so that the flower, leaves, bud and denomination numeral can be seen when the Banknote is held up against the light.

Fluorescent See-Through Denomination - The patterns on the Front and Back, which are of a single colour under normal light, will appear as two fluorescent colours, when exposed to ultra-violet light. The patterns on the Front and Back fit perfectly to form the denomination numeral when the Banknote is held up to the light.

Concealed Denomination:  When the Banknote is tilted under the light, the denomination numeral hidden in the background can be seen.

Embossed/Intaglio Print/Feel: Raised printing gives the Banknote a strong embossed feel by touch.

All Banknotes in Hong Kong are printed at the Hong Kong Note Printing Limited (HKNPL) located at Tai Po, Hong Kong, which has printed Hong Kong Banknotes since April 1996.
