918) "Flamingo", St. Lucia: Eighth and last coin to be issued in the Eastern Caribbean Gold and Silver Bullion and Commemorative Coin Programme: (EC8 Programme)- all coins were released with the issue date as 2018: Gold Bullion Coins (10 Dollars) and Silver Bullion Coins (2 Dollars):

Scottsdale Mint in collaboration with the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) had initiated for the first time, a Gold and Silver Bullion and Commemorative Coin Programme titled - the "EC8". (Sottsdale Mint had earlier brought out popular coins like "Cayman Islands Marlin", "Hokusal" and "The Great Wave").

The "EC8" Coin Programme consists of four coins minted with the release date as "2018" on behalf of each of the eight Caribbean Island Members (CIM) that comprises the ECCB - Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent & the Grenadines.

Some of these nations have never had a gold or silver bullion coin issued for them, but the present series has a unique design for each country being released/issued throughout the year.

The ECCB is the official issuer of the Eastern Caribbean Dollar - the currency of the "EC8 2018 Coin Programme".

All coins are legal tender in the territories of all 8 members that comprises the ECCB.

The eighth and last coin is titled "Flamingo" and is from St. Lucia:

St. Lucia is a sovereign island country in the West Indies, in the Eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located North/North-east of the island of Saint Vincent, North-west of Barbados and South of Martinique. It covers a land area of 617 sq. kms (or about 238 square miles) and has a population of about 170,000 - present day. Its capital is Castries.

In 1500, Juan de la Costa, first mentioned this island on his map calling it "El Falcon".

In 1511, a Spanish Cedula mentions the island within the Spanish domain.

In 1520, a globe in the Vatican shows the island as "Sancta Lucia.

A 1529 Spanish map shows "S. Luzia".

One of the Windward Islands, Saint Lucia was named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse. It is the only country in the world to be named after a historical woman (Ireland is named after the Celtic Goddess of Fertility - Eire).

The French were the Island's first European settlers. It is believed that the French sailors were shipwrecked here on 13th December, the Feast Day of St. Lucy and named the island in honour of "Sainte Lucie".

In 1660, they signed a treaty with the local Caribs.

From 1663 to 1667, the British took control of the Island.

Later, the British fought a series of 14 wars with the French and control of the island changed frequently (it was ruled 7 times each by both the countries). Because it switched control so many times between Britain and France, Saint Lucia was nicknamed "Helen of the West Indies".

In 1840, Representative government was set up.

In 1953, universal suffrage was established.

From 1958 to 1962, the Island was a member of the West Indies Federation.

On 22.02.1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.

St. Lucia is also a member of "Organisation internationale de la Francophonie".
