945) New Design Circulation Coins in the denominations of Rs.20/-, Rs.10/-, Rs.5/-, Rs.2/- and Re1/- being issued by the Indian Government through the Reserve Bank of India with Braille identification features for the visually impaired persons/users:

The Government of India/Reserve Bank of India has unveiled new design coins in the denominations of Rs.20/-, Rs.10/-, Rs.5/- , Rs.2/- and Re.1/- on 07.03.2019, which will have Braille identification features for the visually impaired persons/users.

The designs for these coins have been prepared in consultation with the National Institute of Design and the coins will have several differentiating features to make it easier for the visually impaired users to easily identify the various denominations.

Apart from distinctive markings, the coins will now get bigger and weigh more with the increase in denominations to make recognising them easier.

The presently Circulating Coins:

The following images have been taken from my post put up on 05.09.2013 on my blog:

The Reverse faces of the presently circulating coins in the denominations of Rs.10/-, Rs.5/- , Rs.2/- Rs.1/- and 50 Paise. These coins are all dated 2011.

This five coin set has been issued as a Collector Set by the Mumbai Mint in the Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Coin Quality. This coin card exhibits the colours of the Indian Flag - saffron, white and green in the background.

The image above shows the Obverse faces of all five coins issued in 2011, together with their specifications.

The Reverse and Obverse images of the new Coin Series - 2019

The Obverses of all the denominations of coins in the new issues will depict the Lion Capitol of the Ashok Pillar (which has been incorporated since 1947 into the Emblem of the Indian Government in honour of the legendary Emperor of Ancient India) along with the legend "Satyamev Jayate" (meaning "Truth Always Prevails") in Hindi, inscribed below.

The Reverses of the new coins will have their denominational values written in international numerals, above which will be positioned the Rupee symbol.

The denomination of each coin will be written in words, in Hindi, on top right and in English on the top right and bottom peripheries

The Obverse of the Rs.20/- coin being introduced into circulation for the first time

For example, the Rs.20/- coin will have "Bees Rupiye" (in Hindi) and "Twenty Rupees" (in English      written on the Reverse. The year of minting in international numerals will figure on the centre of the left periphery of the Reverse face.

All previously circulating coins of the same denomination will remain legal tender.

It is not clear as to what is the fate of the 50 Paise coin which was last minted in 2013. Is it being demonetised, owing to its diminished vale and not being in general use. It will be sad to see this denomination being "officially" demonetised as it is the only "Paise" coin which is legal tender as of now.

  1. Very interesting, and important. In many countries coins can be differentiated easily, but when I was in India I found that it wasn't always the case, and I am happy that there is a change coming to the new coins.

    1. Yes, indeed, Tom. These changes are very important in the present day context. The Government, Reserve Bank of India and several institutions are working to make the coins easily accessible/identifiable to all users. I have written several times to the Reserve Bank of India authorities, India Government Mints, Indian Government on this issue. We are also expecting better tactile features on the recently introduced Banknote denominations in 2016.I am very happy that India is one of the lead countries in this initiative.
