1244) University of Turku, Finland: Celebrating the Centenary Anniversary (1920-2020) of the University: A 100 Euro Gold Commemorative Coin being issued by the Finnish Mint: Date of issue: 28.02.2020:

The Finnish Ministry of Finance has authorised the issue of new Collector Gold Coins on 28.02.2020 to mark the Centenary Anniversary of the University of Turku, one of Finland's premier institutions of higher learning.

The University of Turku, established in 1920, is located in Turku in South-western Finland and is the third largest university in Finland measured by student enrolment, after the University of Helsinki and Tampere University. The University also has facilities at Rauma, Pori, Kevo and Salo.

In 1640, the first University - the Royal Academy of Turku - was established in Turku. The faculty of the Royal Academy of Turku, was however, shifted to Helsinki, after the Great Fire of Turku in 1827, which destroyed more than 75 percent of the city.

With Finland having declared their independence from the remnants of the Russian Empire after the abdication of Czar Nicholas II in 1917, the need for a wholly Finnish University, the first of its kind, was felt. A funding campaign was carried out to which 22,040 Finns contributed to.

In recognition of these 22,040 contributors, the new University commissioned a special liquor, developed by the University faculty, specially named "22,040", with the recipe containing some distinctive fruits of Finland - the Cloudberry, the Rowan and the Sea Buckthorn

The new University opened in 1920 and commenced its academic teachings thereafter.

The University's motto "Vapaan Kansan lahja vapaalle tieteelle" (meaning "From a free people to free science and learning") - recognises the gift of learning to the people of the nation.

The location of the first University was initially in the city's Central Market Square, but as the scope and teaching disciplines expanded, a new purpose-built campus was relocated to present day University Hill.

In 01/2010, the Turku School of Economics merged with the University of Turku forming a seventh faculty of the University.
