1273) US State of Maine, USA: Bicentenary Celebrations (1820-2020): A Forever Stamp issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS) commemorating the milestone: Date of Stamp issue: 15.03.2020:

The U.S. Postal Service is celebrating the 200th Anniversary of Maine statehood with a new stamp. Maine became the 23rd State of the US Federation on 15.03.1820.

The picturesque rocky coastline of Maine has long inspired the imagination of writers and artists.

American painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967) was among the many prominent artists who sought tranquility of the state's coastal towns during the summer. His painting "Sea at Ogunquit" (1914) captures the rugged beauty which is characteristic of Maine.

As the Pine Tree State, Maine is known for its natural beauty, including iconic Acadia National Park, forest preserves and wildlife areas that provide endless opportunities for four-season adventures.

The state is also home to world-renowned museums, a thriving local food movement, amateur sports, microbreweries, theatres, lighthouses and much more.

Local craftspeople, fishermen and woodpeckers exhibit the indomitable spirit of independence and self-sufficiency that has long characterised the people of Maine.

Tourism is Maine's leading industry. Unofficially nicknamed "Vacationland", Maine receives over 36.0 million visitors every year. They come to experience its charming fishing villages, gorgeous landscapes, abundant seafood, vibrant cultures and quieter pace of life.

During the colonial period, Maine territory was disputed between Massachusetts Bay Colony and French Acadia, who sought allies among and warred against Native Americans. Following the Revolutionary War and ratification of the US Constitution, the District of Maine remained part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Maine became an independent State on 15.03.1820, with Portland as its capital, until 1827, when the capital was shifted to Augusta, which is a more geographically central location.
