Did You Know Series (27): Limited Edition Gold and Silver coins issued on Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar hailed as the "World’s Greatest Batsman”, by the New Zealand Mint:



Brief introduction:

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar has been the most complete batsman of his time, the most prolific run maker of all time and the biggest cricket icon the game of cricket has ever known. He holds almost every batting record worth owning in the game, including those for most runs, most hundreds in Test matches and One Day Internationals (ODIs). He also has the most international runs.

With the announcement of his retirement from Cricket in November 2012 and a tearful farewell at his home cricket ground at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, he drew his 24-year illustrious career to an end.

Commemorative Coins issued by the New Zealand Mint:

a) $20 Gold (1 oz) coin titled “Sachin Tendulkar World’s Greatest Batsman” issued by the East India Company on behalf of Niue Island:

The East India Company on behalf of Niue Island, has requisitioned the New Zealand Mint to issue 1 oz gold coin in the denomination of $20 to celebrate “a truly unique individual” who remains, by a distance, the most “worshipped” cricketer in the World.

 This coin is a strictly “Limited Edition”, worldwide mintage of 1000 pieces only and is legal tender.
 Reverse of the 1 oz. $20 Gold Coin showing Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar in  action with his bat.
Obverse of the above $20 Gold coin showing a profile of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian-Rank Broadley, whose initials "IRB" appear below the Queen's bust. Also shown is the name of the issuing country "Niue Island".
 Other specifications:

Metal Composition: 9999 Fine Gold;  Coin Quality: Proof, struck in 24 Carat gold; Certified by individually numbered “Certificate of Authenticity”.

Diameter: 32 mm; Edge: Milled; Year of issue: 2013; Weight:  1 Troy oz.

The coin is beautifully presented in a high-gloss wood veneer presentation box.

b) $1 Gold (1/4 oz) coin titled “Sachin Tendulkar  World’s Greatest Batsman” issued by the East India Company on behalf of Niue Island:

The East India Company on behalf of Niue Island, has requisitioned the New Zealand Mint to issue ¼ oz gold coin in the denomination of $1 to celebrate “a truly unique individual” who remains, by a distance, the most “worshipped” cricketer in the World.

 This coin is a strictly “Limited Edition”, worldwide mintage of 2500 pieces only and is legal tender.
 Reverse of the $1 (1/4 oz.) Gold Coin showing Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar in  action with his bat.

The East India Company on behalf of Niue Island, has further requisitioned the New Zealand Mint to issue ½ oz silver coin in the denomination of $1 to commemorate the achievements of Sachin Tendulkar.

 This coin is a strictly “Limited Edition”, worldwide mintage of 5000 pieces only and is legal tender.
 Reverse of the $1 (1 troy oz.) Coin showing Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar in  action with his bat.
 Obverse of the above $1 silver coin showing a profile of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian-Rank Broadley, whose initials "IRB" appear below the Queen's bust. Also shown is the name of the issuing country "Niue Island".

While, these are limited edition special releases, a small portion of the mintage is being sold to the New Zealand Mint customers. Coming as it does at a time when the 2015 edition of the World Cup is being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, these coin issues are generating tremendous interest around the World as a Collector’s item.
Sachin Tendulkar was also honoured at the time of his retirement from Cricket by IndiaPost with the issue of a Miniature sheet of stamps and a First Day Cover:
  miniature sheet of two Rs.20/- stamps, one showing the young Sachin Tendulkar on  debut and the other showing him just before his 200th and Final Test Match. The miniature sheet also shows him bidding goodbye to Indian cricket in November 2013.

(Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was also honoured by Govt of India with the  'Bharat Ratna', the highest Civilian Award, in 2013. He is also a sitting 'Rajya Sabha' member appointed in April 2012).

    "Thanks for sharing this great NEWS. May I suggest - it would have been better if you mention in the last that 'He was honoured by Govt of India with 'Bharat Ratna', a highest civilian award, in 2013. He is also a 'Rajya Sabha' member appointed in April 2012".

    1. I wish so too, Anand. However, with the Indian Customs "pilfering our coins" in Mumbai and other places, importing coins in India through post/couriers has become very risky for Indian coin collectors. In fact, many International mints have stopped shipping coins to India.
