(The theme of the International day of Yoga - 2016 is "Surya Namaskar" ("Greeting the Sun"). I have put up a post on 21.06.2016 illustrating the 12 postures of the "Surya Namaskar" exercise through Indian Postage stamps released on 21.06.2016 itself. The link to this post is as follows: "Surya Namaskar"

The Build-up to the UNO Declaration of 21st June as International Day”:

Prior to  June 21st being declared the International Day of Yoga, a Conference was organised at the Art of Living International Centre titled “Yoga: A Science for World Peace” on 4th and 5th December 2011. It was organised by the “Art of Living Foundation and Deemed University, Bengaluru" jointly with the “Portuguese Confederation of Lisbon, Portugal". Though the idea of observing World Yoga Day originated 10 years ago, this was the first time that Yoga gurus from India endorsed it in large numbers.

A proclamation was signed for persuading the United Nations (UNO) and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day.

Excerpts from the Indian Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi’s Address to the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on 27.09.2014:

Yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition. This tradition is 5000 years old. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well-being. Yoga is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with our selves, the world and nature. By changing our life-style and creating consciousness, it can help us to deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day”.

The UN Approves the Draft resolution tabled by India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations:

On 11.12.2014, the 193 member United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) approved the proposal by consensus, with a record 177 co-sponsoring countries, a Resolution (no.69/131) to establish 21st June as the “International Day of Yoga”.

In its Resolution, the UNGA recognised that Yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being and recognised the requirement of wider dissemination of information about the benefits of practicing Yoga for the health of the World population. It also recognised that Yoga also brings harmony in all walks of life and is known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many lifestyle related disorders.

The UN recognised that Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word “Yoga” derives from the Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness. Today it is practiced in various forms around the World and continues to grow in popularity. International yoga day aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing Yoga.

Explaining the initiative Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, the United nations Secretary-General said:

“During a visit to India this year, I had an opportunity to practice Yoga. Yoga is an ancient discipline from a traditional setting that has grown in popularity to be enjoyed by practitioners in every Region. By proclaiming 21 June as the International Day of Yoga, the General Assembly has recognised the holistic benefits of this timeless practice and its inherent compatibility with the principles and values of the United Nations”.

Why 21st June was selected as International Day of Yoga?

From the perspective of Yoga, the Summer Solstice marks the transition to “Dakshinayana”. Dakshinayana is considered to be the time when elements of Nature support all those who are following spiritual practices.

The full moon after the summer solstice is known as “Guru Poornima”. Lord Shiva, the first Yoga Practitioner (or the “Adi Yogi”) is said to have begun imparting the knowledge of Yoga to the rest of mankind on this day and he became the first Yoga Guru (or “Adi Guru”). 21st June is also the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, having special significance in many parts across the World.

Yoga – explained:

Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is an Art and a Science for healthy living.

The word “Yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root “Yuj” meaning “to join”, “to yoke” or “to unite”.

According to the Yogic scriptures, the practice of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with the universal consciousness.

A person who experiences this oneness of existence is said to be “in Yoga” and is termed as a Yogi who has attained a state of freedom referred to as “Mukti”, “Nirvana”, “Kaivalya” or “Moksha”.

“Yoga” also refers to an inner science comprising a variety of methods through which human beings can achieve union between the body and the mind to attain self-realisation.

The aim of Yogic practice (or “Sadhana”) is to overcome all kinds of sufferings that lead to a sense of freedom in every walk of life with holistic health, happiness and harmony.

Yoga – A Science dating back to thousands of years:

The Science or Art of Yoga has its origins thousands of years ago. According to Yogic legend, Shiv or Shiva, the Lord of Destruction in the Hindu trilogy was the first “Yogi” or “Adiyogi” and the first Yoga “Guru” or “Adi Guru”.

Though Yoga is believed to have been practiced in the pre-Vedic times, the great Sage Maharishi Patanjali systematized and codified the then existing Yogic practices, their meaning and the related knowledge through his “Yoga Sutras”.

After Patanjali, many Sages and Yoga masters have contributed towards the preservation and development of Yogic practices through well-documented postures and literature.

With awareness being created all over the Globe about the benefits of Yoga, many people are attracted to the practices and philosophy of Yoga across Continents.

Philosophies, Traditions, Lineages of Yoga:

The different Philosophies, traditions, Lineages and the “Guru-Shishya Paramparas” (meaning “teacher-student traditions”) of Yoga have led to the emergence of different traditional schools. Each school has its own approach and practices that would lead to the ultimate goals and Objectives of Yoga.

The most widely practiced Yoga “Sadhanas are:

Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyhara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi, Bandhas and Mudras, Shatkarmas, Yuktahara, Mantra-japa, yukta-karma etc.

Co-ordinating the International Yoga day Programmes in India:

The International Day of Yoga Programmes in India was co-ordinated by the Central Government, Ministry of AYUSH (Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy).

For several days prior to the International Day of Yoga, citizens of India received the following Text Message from the Ministry of AYUSH for several days, apprising citizens of the Yoga Day programmes on 21.06.2015:

Rejuvenate with Yoga: It helps to achieve control over the mind and flexibility of the body. Live Life to its full potential. Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India.

The First International Day of Yoga celebrated with great enthusiasm across the World and in India:

The First International Day of Yoga was celebrated all over the World by millions of enthusiasts and in the Indian sub-continent with great enthusiasm as well. In India, more than 250,00,000 persons participated in various programmes organised all over the country.

I participated in the International Yoga Day programme organised at Symbiosis College, Pune. I couldn’t do much because of my bad leg, but I was certainly enthused by the massive response from the residents of Vimannagar. Best of all, I even received a Certificate of Participation from the Organisers.

At the Rajpath, New Delhi, over 35985 participants including the Indian Prime minister Shri Narendra Modi and a large number of dignitaries from 84 nations, performed 21 Yoga Asanas (postures) for about 35 minutes. This event established two Guinness World records:

-Largest Yoga Class having 35985 participants and largest number of Nationalities (Eighty Four in all) participating in the event.

Needless controversies:

The “Surya Namaskar” set of exercises (which in my opinion is one of the most beneficial of Yogic exercises and are the most beneficial in keeping the practitioners fit and healthy & have nothing to do with religion) was taken off due to objections from certain quarters, from the list of exercises included in the official programme as was the chanting of “shlokas”.

A personal interaction from my visit to Ghana during February 2013 with Ahmad, a Ghanaian:

When I was in Ghana on a visit some years ago, I had an interesting interaction with a Ghanaian named Ahmad, who had come to negotiate with us at my friend’s timber/teakwood factory for buying a heap of scrap iron. After several rounds of hard bargaining with him, I settled for a good deal for my friend.

Then, we leaned over the railing like two “cowboys” in the “Old West” and he spoke to me “Rajeev, do you know Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in India? I have a lot of Indian friends in Kumasi (the nearby town) where I have lived for several years and have got a lot of AV Cassettes and literature on him from my Gujarati friends. I have listened to him several times and have been very influenced by his concepts/discourses. I even listened to discussions he had with several prominent Muslim/Sufi thinkers of our time on African TV channels which I thought went 50-50.

I was not convinced about his “religious philosophy” but I have been drawn towards his Yogic practices like the “Sudarshan Kriya”. I even have a lot of Cassettes/VCRs on his meditation/ practices as well as cassettes on yoga taught by other practitioners, which is supposedly an ancient Indian system of staying fit. Should I start doing Yoga and practice Ravi Shankar’s “Sudarshan Kriya”? I have my doubts, however. What do you think?”

I leaned over the railing like a seasoned “Old Cowboy” and pondered over his “loaded” question. I am not much into following the teachings of any Guru in particular and really can’t sit through “anybody’s lectures”, but for a whole month in Ghana, I had been studying the “Adinkra symbols” which are the ancient symbols of the “Ashantis” (who were always fighting with this tribe or that – I wondered whether they would find peace if they were called the “Shantis” (which means “Peace” in Hindi/Devnagri).
Although Ahmad was a “Northerner” and the Ashantis were “Southerners” in Ghana, I had found out that “social teachings” and respect for the spirits of their ancestors was deeply rooted in the Adinkra Symbols.

So I answered Ahmad thus, “You see this mango tree, Ahmad? It is laden with fruit which can be enjoyed by the people, as well as, by future generations!! You see those women chopping wood for using as firewood for cooking food tonight? For them, cooking a meal tonight is the “larger picture”.

But, for a Guru, who need not be a religious teacher, but looks to the welfare of a Society at large, the “larger picture” in this example would be to somehow save the mango tree from being chopped, so that everyone can eat its fruit for posterity. So how does he save this tree? If he tells you “the spirits of your ancestors” live on this tree, then you would think twice before chopping this tree.

Now you decide whether you are looking at the short term picture or the long term picture. Arguing about whether you need to chop the tree down for firewood today or to enjoy its fruits in perpetuity.”

There was a long silence, before Ahmad answered “I never looked at this issue in that light. I am going to follow the Yogic practices and visit India, to see Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in person.”

He wanted me to come the next day to Kumasi to see his literature on Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and other spiritual leaders, as well as, the Yogic practices he wanted to follow, but as I was leaving for India the next day, I could not meet Ahmad again.

The above is an image of a 100 stamps sheet titled "Yoga" in the denomination of 25 Paise each, printed by India Security Press, Nasik Road, under the 11th Definitive Series Programme. Definitive stamps are used for day - to - day postal mailing purposes and are available in various ascending denominations from 25 paisa onwards at all postal counters.

Mr Ramchandra Lalingkar has explained the use of "Definitive Stamps" as follows:

"These 25 paise stamps are being used regularly every week, fortnight or month by 'Registered periodicals' which are in hundreds through out India (including our monthly magazine 'Samvad'). Because such a concession in postage is being granted by Postal Authorities as per Postal rules only.

For upto 50 grams weight per 'article' this concession is granted. If the weight exceeds 50 grams, then an additional 25 paise stamp is required to be affixed upto 100 grams, and so on.

For getting this concessional postage facility the publisher has to apply on prescribed forms every three years to renew the facility along with enclosures of proper records which are maintained by the publishing office. This is a very cumbersome job & we as a Pensioner's Association (being Publisher of our monthly magazine "Samvad") are following this
procedure for the past decade or so.

Saving huge sums on account of postages:

To save thousands of rupees on a/c of postages, we have to do this. Otherwise we have to pay Rs.4/- as postage per issue of "Samvad" every month. And our membership is at present more than 12500 & increasing every month. So calculate the amount of postage that would have been incurred by us every month.

There is another facility also granted to us by postal authorities as per rules that we can dispatch Samvad without affixing 25 paise postal stamps as our number of articles to be posted every month is quite large & it is not possible for the post office to provide us that many number of stamps every month. So they give us a bill of postages every month & we have to pay it and show their receipt next month when we go to Market Yard PSO (Postal Sub-Office) on 25th of the month.

In India, there are periodicals like India Today, The Week, and so on....... who have been granted such concessions "Without Prepayment of Postage".

You will observe that on last page on top, there is printed this authorization granted by postal authorities."

An International Yoga Day emblem "Rangoli" ("Rangoli" is an art form of India in which patterns are created on the floors, in living rooms, courtyards, at the entrance of a building, park or house etc. using materials such as coloured rice, dry flour, coloured sand, powder , or flower petals).
This Rangoli was created by a group of young students outside the "Jogger's Park" venue where the third International Yoga Day activities were being held on 21.06.2017, in which we were all taking part.
