421) Deendayal Upadhyaya: Birth Centenary (25.09.1916-11.02.1968) A Commemorative postage stamp of Rs.10/- brought out by India Post on 29.12.2016:

About Deendayal Upadhyaya (25.09.1916 -11.02.1968):

His Birth and hardships faced turn him into a man of steely determination:

He was born on 25.09.1916 in the village of Dhankia in Rajasthan. His childhood was spent in an ordinary household.

His father Shri Bhagwati Prasad and mother Smt. Rampyari were of a religious bent of mind who believed in the “Sanatan Dharam” (faith).

Deendayal, who was lovingly called “Deenu” by his family, lost his father when he was less than three years old and his mother before he was eight.

He was brought up and educated at his maternal grandfather’s house under extremely difficult conditions.

Deendayal drew strength from the hardships and sufferings around him and rose above his circumstances through sheer grit and determination.

Education:

He received his primary education at Kota and Rajgarh. He matriculated from Sikar.

In 1937, he stood first in the Board examination and Maharaja Kalyan Singh of Sikar presented him with a gold medal and a monthly scholarship of Rs.10/- and Rs.250/- towards his books, as a recognition of his merit.

He went to Pilani to study for his Intermediate course. He topped the Board Examination with distinction in all the subjects and was the first student of Birla College to have fared so well. G.D. Birla presented him with a gold medal, a monthly scholarship of Rs.10/- and Rs.250/- for buying his books.

Thereafter, in 1939, he graduated with First Division from Sanatan Dharma College, Kanpur and enrolled in St. John’s College, Agra for pursuing his Master’s Degree in English Literature.

He passed the Provincial Services Examination but did not join as he had no interest in the British Administrative Service.

Thereafter, he left for Prayag to do his B.T. His special areas of interest were Sociology and Philosophy.

He always had the interest of poor students, who were weak in studies, and assisted them by creating the “Zero Association” in Pilani.

As a person – of charitable disposition:

He was an extremely disciplined and devoted person. Though deprived of the love and guidance of his parents, grand-parents and of any material acquisitions, he with his devotion to serve humanity, modesty and humility earned the respect of everyone who came in contact with him.

Contact and work with the Rashtriya Sweyamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Jan Sangh (the pre-cursor party to the Bhartiya Janata Party – BJP):

While studying for his Graduation in Kanpur, he came in contact with the “Rashtriya Swayemsevak Sangh” (RSS) through his classmate Baluji Mahashabde. He met the RSS Founder Dr. Hedgewar, interacting with him inspired Deendayal to devote his life in the service of the people.

He attended the 40 day summer vacation RSS Camp at Nagpur, where he underwent training in Sangh Education (OTC) in 1939 and 1942.

After completing his education and second-year training in the RSS Education Wing, he became a life-long “Pracharak” (teacher of the thoughts/philosophies of the RSS). He entered politics through the RSS and became the General Secretary of the Bhartiya Jan Sangh and later it’s President.

His writings, magazines and journals:

He was the author of “Samrat Chandragupt” (a legendary King of Ancient India) which appealed to the youngsters as a historical novel with its own distinct literary flavour.

Jagadguru Shankracharya” was his second novel.

His objective was to inspire the youth to look back to the country’s glorious past, take pride in and dedicate their lives to the revival of the glory of Ancient India.

He also started a monthly magazine “Rashtra Dharm” (meaning “National Obligations”), a weekly “Panchjanya” and a daily “Swadesh” (meaning “My country”).

In 1961, when Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Bhartiya Jan Sangh, he became the first General Secretary of its Uttar Pradesh branch. He was also chosen as All India General Secretary of the Party.

Greater responsibilities thrust upon him:

After the passing away of Dr. Mookerjee under controversial circumstances, the entire burden of nurturing the young organisation and building it up as a nation-wide movement/entity fell upon Deendayal’s shoulders.

For 15 long years, he remained the Jan Sangh’s General Secretary. He raised a band of dedicated workers imbued with idealism and provided the entire ideological framework of the party.

The final triumph of his statesmanship and vision came in the historic session of the Party in 1967.

He was active in India’s political life from 1937 to 1968.

Controversy over his tragic death – an unsolved murder?

On 11.02.1968, he was found dead in the early hours near Mughalsarai Railway station while travelling on a train.

His murder remained unsolved and it is believed that the ruling Central Government dispensation hampered the investigation at all stages, till ultimately it was consigned to police records as an “unsolved case”:

The facts:

He was killed while he was travelling by train from Lucknow to Patna.

It has been often claimed in a “cover-up” investigation by the CBI that he had been pushed out by robbers just before the train entered Mughalsarai Station.

The CBI did arrest two persons who confessed to pushing the Jan Sangh leader out when he caught them stealing his bag and threatened to report the matter to the police, but they were acquitted for lack of evidence, as CBI did not pursue the case whole-heartedly. Neither was the then Government dispensation interested in “finding out” what really happened.

It was also reported that none of Deendayal Upadhyaya’s co-passengers were identified by the CBI as they had reportedly furnished false IDs and addresses – Was it the work of “robbers” or a “cover-up” of a well-planned murder?

I remember that in 1968 itself, in a séance by a well known person who claimed contacts with the otherworld beings, the spirit of Deendayal Upadhyay was contacted and it was brought out that while sleeping in the train, he was hit on the head with a blunt object like a jack-hammer and when he got up, through a stream of his own blood, he could see faint profiles of two of his attackers whom the spirit could not identify.

His personality and concept of a resurgent India:

He was a deep and original thinker. In the field of politics and economics, he was pragmatic and down-to-earth. He visualised for India a decentralised polity and self-reliant economy with the village. He was open to the use of modern technology but wanted it to be adapted to suit Indian requirements.

He placed National interests above all else.

The background of Integrated Humanism is the harmonisation on Indian and western thoughts. According to him, man should be at the centre of our entire system.

The system in which there is a mediocre development of a man’s body and mind, the soul is incomplete and human beings are driven by cunningness and self-interest, whereas, when the emphasis is on the “complete development” of a human being, man rises above this pettiness and evolves into a “power-house of harmonised strands of thought and culture”.

Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY):

This Scheme, which has been named to honour Shri Deendayal Upadhyaya on his birth anniversary, is a key initiative of the Narendra Modi Government aimed at providing continuous power supply to the whole of rural India, particularly with the help of renewal energy like solar power.

This scheme will replace the existing Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY).

The DDUGJY focuses on feeder separation (rural households & agriculture) and strengthening of sub-transmission & distribution infrastructure including metering at all levels in rural areas.

This will enable provision of 7 x 24 power to rural households and adequate power to agricultural consumers.

A new App GARV II has been launched to provide real-time data of all 600,000 villages of India. The App. is envisaged to ensure transparency in the implementation of this huge Rural Electrification Programme. The new App also enables citizens to participate in the developmental works and give their feedback and inputs related to the rural electrification programme, which is designed to create public scrutiny at all levels.

In addition, the village-wise works sanctioned under the DDUGJY Scheme has been mapped to scrutinise the progress of the works carried out under the project in each village.

Benefits of the Scheme:

- All villages and households will be electrified

- There will be an increase in agricultural yield due to mechanisation

- Businesses of Small and Household Enterprises will grow and result in new avenues for employment

- Improvement in Health, Education, Banking (ATM) services will take place

- Improvement in accessibility to Radio, Telephone, Television, Internet and Mobile facilities will grow by leaps and bounds

- Betterment in Social security due to availability of electricity

- Accessibility of electricity to schools, “Gram Panchayats” (village councils), hospitals, police services etc.

- Rural areas shall get increased opportunities for comprehensive development.

This scheme is envisaged in keeping with the vision of Deendayal Upadhyaya

"It's good that the present Govt has issued such a 'First-day Cover' and Rs.10/- postal stamp to commemorate 'Birth Centenary' of Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay, an ideologue of Jan Sangh. I have seen him personally and had occasion to hear his 'Boddhik' - nee speech when I was young. Very much dedicated 'simple' personality. I offer my 'pranam' to this unique personality on this occasion !!"

    1. It was indeed a privilege to have heard and seen him in person, Lalingkar sahab. I remember that I was about 10 years old when the shocking news of his passing away came. He was a very simple and down to earth person and everyone who came in contact with him was very impressed by him.
