Legendary Singers of India: A set of ten stamps issued by India Post on 30.12.2016:
The Miniature Sheet
containing 10 stamps of 500 Paise of Rs.5/- each honouring the legendary
singers – (clock-wise from left bottom) T.M. Soundararajan, Bhupen Hazarika, Talat
Mahmood, Manna Dey, Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, Geeta
Dutt and Shamshad Begum. In the centre of the Miniature Sheet is an old time hand-cranked
gramophone belting out popular songs from a 78 RPM record.
The First Day Cover (FDC)
showing the ten 500 Paise or Rs.5/- stamps released on the 10 legendary
singers. On the left is a stylised microphone with musical notes. Below the
Stamps is inscribed “Bharat Ke Vikhyaat Gaayak” (in Hindi) and “Legendary
Singers of India” (in English).
The Cancellation hand-stamp used thrice to
cancel all 10 stamps, shows a musical note in the centre and is titled around
the periphery - “Bharat Ke Vikhyaat Gaayak” (in Hindi) and “Legendary Singers
of India” (in English). The Cancellation is of New Delhi GPO and is dated “30.12.2016”.

About the individual legendary singers:
Shamshad
Begum (14.04.1919 -22.04.2013):
She was a popular
personality who was one of the first playback singers in the Hindi film
industry. She had a distinctive voice and was a versatile artist, who sang over
6,000 songs in Hindi and the Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil and Punjabi
languages. Her significant break-through came when she began singing on All
India Radio (AIR) in Peshawar and Lahore from 1937.
Soon after, she became a
well known artist in the Hindi Film industry and was at the peak of her career
from 1940 to 1955 and, then again, from 1957 to 1968.
She was an artist of
extra-ordinary talent and abilities and the songs she has left behind in her
long career continue to enthral music lovers even today.
Geeta
Dutt (23.11.1930-20.07.1972):
She was a prominent singer
in the Hindi film industry who found particular prominence as a playback singer
in Hindi cinema. She also sang many Bengali songs. She got her first break in
1946, in the mythological film “Bhakt Prahlad”.
However, it was the film “Do Bhai” in
1947, where her fresh and melodious voice combined vivacity and pathos in a way
that touched the pulse of thousands of music lovers.
Geeta Dutt was blessed
with a rich voice that was like an interacting instrument that at once
mesmerised and charmed her listeners. She sang numerous songs, some of which
are extremely popular even today.
Talat
Mahmood (24.02.1924 – 09.05.1998):
He is considered to be one
of the greatest male non-classical and semi-classical singers of India who
conquered innumerable hearts and stirred countless souls with his beautifully
soft silken voice and profoundly artistic subtle method of singing.
Even though he is
particularly admired for his rendition of soft and sombre semi-classical and
non-classical ghazals, the film songs
sung by him are also considered critically flawless and outstanding.
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1992, in recognition of
his profound artistic contributions in the spheres of cinematic and ghazal
music.
Mohammad
Rafi (24.12.1924 – 31.07.1980):
He was one of the most
popular playback singers of the Hindi film industry. He was notable for his
versatility and he sang a wide range of songs including classical numbers,
patriotic songs, sad lamentations, highly romantic numbers, qawwalis, ghazals and bhajans.
Between 1950 and 1970, he
was the most sought after singer in the Hindi film industry.
His style was smooth and
easy and his range varied from bhajans
and ghazals to light hearted romantic
songs. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1967.
Mukesh
(22.07.1923 – 27.08.1976):
He is known for his
rendition of soulful and melodious songs and was one of Hindi film industry’s
most celebrated figures in the field of playback singing.
Mukesh Chand Mathur,
popularly known as Mukesh, created his own singing style. He sang many songs
which became popular when he sang for films like “Anokhi Ada” (1948), “Mela”
(1948), “Andaz” (1949) et al.
He is best known for the
songs that he sung for actor Raj Kapoor. He remained active as a singer for two
decades spanning the 1950s to 1970s, which saw the rise of the man who is immortalised
in the annals of playback singing.
Mukesh received Filmfare
Best Male Playback Singer awards for his songs in the films – “Anari”, Pehchan”, “Beimaan” and “Kabhie Kabhie”.
Manna
Dey (01.05.1919 – 24.10.2013):
He was a legendary figure
in Indian music. He started his career in playback singing with the film “Tamanna” in 1942.
He established his
versatility between 1948 to 1954 by singing not only classical based film
songs, but also such film songs which were a fusion of Indian classical music
and pop music.
From 1953, he had begun
singing ghazals in Hindi films. He turned into an independent music composer in
Hindi films with “Maha Pooja” in
1954.
His experimentation with
western music too produced many unforgettable melodies resulting in an increase
in singing offers in films from 1955 onwards.
His peak period in Hindi
film industry is considered to be from 1953 to 1969, during which he recorded
758 Hindi songs, of which 631 came between 1957 and 1969.
His music has enthralled
the audience throughout the world. He was honoured with the “Padma Shri” in 1971, the Padma Bhushan
in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007.
Kishore
Kumar (04.08.1929 – 13.10.1987):
He was an Indian film
playback singer, actor, lyricist, composer, producer, director and
screen-writer.
He is considered to be one
of the most successful playback singers of the Hindi film industry. Apart from
Hindi, he sand in many Indian languages including Bengali, Marathi, Assamese,
Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam, Oriya and Urdu.
He was famous for singing
upbeat light songs and light comical acting roles. He was not afraid to borrow
unusual techniques. He was inspired by “yodelling” and he adapted and used it
in a number of films, such as “New Delhi” (1957) and “Pyar ka Mausam” (1969).
Hemant
Kumar (16.06.1920 – 26.09.1989):
He was a singer, composer
and producer in the Hindi and Bengali film industry. Even though he is most
known for his Hindi film songs from the 1950s and 1960s, he also sang in Bengali,
and other Indian languages.
He is known to have
recorded about 2,000 songs during his career.
His first film song was in
the Bengali film “Nimai Sanyas”
(1941) and his first compositions for himself were the Bengali non-film songs “Katha Kayonako Shodhu Shono” and Amar Biraha Akashe Priya” (1944).
His first Hindi film songs
were in “Irada” (1944).
He is considered to be a
foremost exponent of “Rabindra Sangeet”.
In the Hindi film industry, he is known for his work in films like “Bees Saal Baad” (1962), “Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam” (1962 and “Anupama” (1966).
T.M.
Soundarajan (24.03.1922 – 25.05.2013):
He was popularly known as “TMS”
and was a playback singer in Tamil films for over six decades. He sand over
20,000 film songs and over 3,000 devotional and classical songs, in a career
spanning over six decades, during which he recorded film songs in eleven
languages including Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam.
He also composed music for
several of the evergreen devotional songs that he recorded. He was the most
popular male playback singer in South India from the 1950s until 1991. He also
acted in a few films.
His robust and
full-throated singing perfectly suited two mega stars of South Indian Cinema –
M.G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganeshan, who had their roots in Tamil theatre. A
versatile singer, he modulated his voice to suit the two stars perfectly.
Bhupen
Hazarika (08.09.1926 – 05.11.2011):
He was a poet, music
composer, singer, actor, journalist, author and film-maker of high repute, born
in Assam.
He began his career in
films as a child actor in the second talkie film to be made in the pioneering
year of 1939 “Indramalati”.
After completing his
education and leaving his job as a teacher, he went to Kolkata where he
established himself as a successful music director and singer. During that
period, he made several award winning Assamese films like ”Shakuntala”, “Pratidhwani”
etc. and composed evergreen music for many Assamese films.
He was also considered as
a trend-setter in Bengali music. As a singer, he was known for poetic
compositions and parables which touched on themes ranging from romance to
social and political commentary and as a composer for his use of folk music. “Ek Pal” (1986), “Rudaali” (1993) and “Daman:
A Victim of Marital Violence” (2001) are some of the major Hindi films to his
credit.
He also composed music for
films from Bangladesh which won him an international acclaim.
He was awarded the “Padma Shree” in 1977 for his outstanding
contribution to the field of culture in India.
