423) Legendary Women (of India): A set of 10 post cards issued by Karnataka Postal Circle of India Post in 2015:

This post card is titled “Warrior Queens” and depicts two stamps one on Kittur Rani Channamma (1778 – 1829) and the other on Rani of Jhansi – Laxmi Bai (1857-1957). In the background of the stamp images are their respective territories/forts, which they fought to defend against aggressors.

Kittur Rani Channamma (1778 – 1829:

One of the stamps of 25 Paise denomination (issued in 1977), portraying Rani Channamma on horseback.

She was the Queen of Kittur, a Princely State in Karnataka. She was one of the first Indian female rulers to lead an armed struggle for Independence against the machinations of the British East India Company (BEIC) in 1824 engineered under the “Doctrine of Lapse”. She has become a symbol of the Independence Movement in India. In Karnataka, she is celebrated as being among the foremost women warriors and patriots.

Rani of Jhansi – Laxmi Bai (1857-1957):

The other is a stamp of 15 Naye Paise (issued in 1957) showing Rani of Jhansi on horseback, issued by India Post to commemorate the First War of Indian Independence in 1857.

(For more information of the “First War of Indian Independence” and Rani of Jhansi’s prominent role in it, please visit my post at the following link: Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the First War of Indian Independence in 1857

Rani of Jhansi, Laxmibai was the Queen of the Maratha-ruled Princely State of Jhansi situated in the present day Indian State of Uttar Pradesh. She is celebrated as one of the leading Indian nationalists of the First War of Indian Independence fought in 1857 against the British Raj.

This post card is titled “Women of India’s Freedom Struggle”.

On this postcard are depicted five stamps issued by India Post on - Annie Besant, Bhikaji Cama, Kasturba Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu and Aruna Asaf Ali. In the background is the silhouette of the Indian flag.

Annie Besant (1837-1933):

The image of one of the stamps issued by India Post, which honours her, is of the denomination of 15 Naye Paise.

She was a British socialist, theosophist, women’s rights activist, writer and orator and advocate of Irish and Indian self-rule and Independence from the British.

Bhikaji Cama (24.09.1861 – 13.08.1936):

The image of the 15 Naye Paise stamp issued on her and depicted on this post card was released by India Post on 26.01.1962

She was one of the prominent figures in the Indian Independence movement.

Among her many other activities for Irish and Indian Independence, she raised the above flag on 22.08.1907 at the International Socialist Conference in Stuttgart, Germany. Based on the then Calcutta flag, the green, yellow and red fields represent Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism respectively. The crescent and the sun also represent Islam and Hinduism. The eight lotuses in the upper register represent the eight Provinces of the then British India. The words in the middle are “Vande Mataram” (meaning “We bow to thee Mother India”), the slogan of the Indian National Congress.
The Indian Flag raised by Madame Cama at the International Socialist Conference in Stuttgart, Germany, because of which event, she had to remain in exile from her motherland India

The design was adopted in 1914 as the emblem of the Berlin Committee (later known as the Indian Independence Committee). The original flag raised by her in Stuttgart is now on display at the Maratha and Kesari Library in Pune.

Several Indian cities have streets named after her – Bhikaji Cama or Madame Cama as she is known. The State Bank of India Corporate Centre Building where I have worked for five years is also situated on a street named after her.

In 1997, the Indian Coast Guard has commissioned a fast patrol vessel ICGS Bhikaji Cama after her.

    1. As a matter of fact, I did read the plaque under her statue when we were commuting from Churchgate stn. to Corporate Centre. I do remember that she had raised some sort of an indian Flag in an International forum. While putting up this post I found out the exact nature of her symbolic act, which exiled her from India during her lifetime. She even requested Sir Cowasji Jehangir of Pune, an eminent person of immense clout with the British authorities, but she had to stay out of India till she passed away, such were the British Raj Govt "scared" of her.

    1. Thank you. I have changed both the dates as mentioned by you. Apparently, there was a typographical oversight in the description given on the Post Card on Savitribai Phule.
