1219) Rijeka (Republic of Croatia) and Galway (Republic of Ireland) declared "European Capitals of Culture - 2020": A Joint-Stamp issue brought out by Croatian Post and An Post celebrating the designation: Stamps issue date: 23.01.2020:

The European Capital of Culture is a city which is designated by the European Union (EU)for a period of one year during which it organises a series of cultural events with a strong pan-European dimension.

Preparing a European Capital of Culture is an opportunity for the city to generate considerable cultural, social and economic benefits and it can help foster urban regeneration, change the city's image and raise its visibility and profile on an international scale.

In 1985, Melina Mercouri, Greece's Minister of Cultural Affairs and her French counterpart Jack Lang mooted the idea of designating an annual "capital of Culture" to bring Europeans closer together by highlighting the richness and diversity of European cultures and raising awareness of their common history and values.

The Commission of the European Union manages the title and each year the Council of Ministers of the European Union formally designates European Capitals of Culture. So far, more than 44 cities have been designated as "Capitals of Culture".

The Cities of Galway, Ireland and Rijeka (Croatia) have been designated as European "Capitals of Culture - 2020":

The two Stamps of 8.40 Euro each issued in the set - representing "GALWAY" and "RIJEKA".

On 23.01.2020, An Post (Republic of Ireland) and Croatian Post (Republic of Croatia) have jointly issued two commemorative stamps to celebrate the designation of Galway (Ireland) and Rijeka (Croatia)  as "European Capitals of Culture - 2020."

Croatia is already presiding over the European Union in 2020, as such, with one of its cities being designated as the "European Capital of Culture", it makes it a double achievement for the country.

The First Day Cover (FDC) is titled "RIJEKA 2020 EUROPSKA PRIJESTOLNICA KULTURE".

The two stamps included in the set are affixed on top right. The Special Cancellation Handstamp is titled likewise on the outer periphery and in the centre are the names of "RIJEKA and GALWAY". The cancellation is of Zagreb Post Office and the Cancellation is dated - "23.01.2020".

The Rijeka Stamp:

The Stamp on Rijeka, shows the mascot wavingtwo flags titled "EOROPSKA PRIJESTOLNICA KULTURE 2020" (meaning "European Capital of Culture 2020").

In the background are historic/ancient sea-front  buildings of Rijeka, and a ship/vessel anchored on the sea. A flock of sea-gulls are seen in flight. The emblem of Croatia is at the top left corner.

The stamp is  of the value of 8.60 Euro.

About Rijeka:

Nestled within the Northern coastal Croatia's stunning landscapes, Rijeka is a city bristling with life and a bastion of free-spirited, peaceful co-existence and progressive thinking.

Having developed under no less than nine countries within the last one hundred years - Rijeka and its residents - look forward to welcoming visitors this year , offering a plethora of cultural and historical heritage sites - testifying to Europe's profoundly turbulent history.

This port of diversity, where the Mediterranean and Central Europe meet, will host a rich cultural programme in 2020 showcasing Rijeka's identity, while at the same time offering a panoply of European culture.

The roads of Rijeka - both physical ones and the metaphorical ones - lead towards the outskirts, where they merge with the natural environment.

Located in the Kvarner Gulf in the Adriatic Sea, Rijeka is the main marine port in Croatia, as well as, the economic, administrative and cultural centre of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.

It is a city often overlooked by tourists in search for a magical vacation under the Adriatic sun, who often stay at romantic historic hotels and villas in Opatija or enjoy the natural beauties of nearby islands. Tourists/visitors to Rijeka are astonished by the complexity of this post-industrial city, which, due to its strategic position, was a site of fierce conflicts between various forces throughout history.

Rijeka has been burdened by a traumatic historical past and it is a divided city formed by force and migration, both voluntary and involuntary.

It lies in a geographic area the borders of which were constantly changed and redefined, causing various politically sensitive situations in the past. The city was governed by as many as nine different countries in the 20th Century alone. Such circumstances have generated a state of mind incorporating typical European values, such as multi-lingualism and tolerance, acceptance of diversity as a common good, focus on the things that unite the city - cooperation and culture.

Rijeka has, by and large, overcome its own misconceptions, and narratives labelling it as a well-developed port and a promising industrial city . The city of Rijeka is no longer the city that in the last century had lost many jobs, leaving only abandoned industrial halls, smokestacks and facilities behind. The vast and epochal industrial heritage of Rijeka now defines its city and citizens.

The "2020 European Capital of Culture" title represents the foundation for building a new future for the city, as it gears up to host several programmes for visitors who will throng the city this year, looking forward to build a lasting bond with them.

About Galway:

The Irish city of Galway also bears the prestigious title of the "European Capital of Culture - 2020". Galway is located on the West Coast of Ireland. Situated on the Wild Atlantic Way, it is known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, the exceptional kindness of its people and for its status as the cultural hub of Ireland.

This year's exciting pan-European programme will bring events to some of the most unexpected places both city and region-wide, including the islands, remote villages, wetlands, fields, mountains and beaches. With all the food, music, dancing, theatrical and visual arts performances, poetry reading, literary and sporting events blending into quite a spectacle, visitors coming to Galway are in for a great fun-filled experience.

As part of one of the biggest cultural events throughout 2020, aiming to empower communities and to unite them through culture, both Rijika and Galway will similarly host a rich cultural programme, this year.

The Galway stamp:

Illustrated and designed by Steve Simpson, the Galway stamp depicts famous landmarks including NUI Galway (National University of Ireland), Claddagh sea-front buildings and the Spanish arch. Also featured are symbols associated with Galway such as the Galway Hooker, the Claddagh Ring Emblem, the Galway City Coat of arms, a Macnas giant puppet representing theatre and a guitar to symbolise Galway buskers.
