To mark the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA), these commemorative coins feature a design inspired by an ornament discovered at a 4,000 year old archaeological site in the UAE (United Arab Emirates), representing the country's rich heritage and deep roots.

The Al Wasl Plaza:

The Al Wasl Plaza is described as the "crown jewel" and "beating heart" of Expo-2020.

Al Wasl means "connection" in English is also the historical name of Dubai. The steel trellis is the centre-piece of the site, where all roads meet, and reflects the world fair's aim to bring people together.

It connects the three main zones - Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability - the central sub-themes of the Expo.

The expansive dome is one of the most easily identified structures at the Dubai South side.

Thousands of visitors are expected to crowd the plaza, which is near the prominent falcon-wing inspired UAE pavilion, Dubai Metro and the seven entrances and exits to the World Fair.

The Al-Wasl Plaza's trellis design was inspired by an ancient golden ring found in Saruq Al Hadid site by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and ruler of Dubai.

The moulded steel dome is 130 metre wide, 67 metre tall and weighs more than 500 tonnes. It required expert engineers with precision heavy lifting equipment to raise it and fit it into place.

It is taller than the Leaning Tower of Pisa and one of the largest single structures at the site. Al Wasl will remain a permanent installation here even after the World Fair ends on 04/2021.

The world's first look at the expo, the 360-degree dome will be the main staging area for the opening ceremony on 20.10.2020. It will host performances, concerts and events throughout the six month long expo and also the closing ceremony.

Striking images, films and dazzling lights will be beamed on to the translucent dome through over 200 projectors, already fitted within it.

A total of 192 nations, States and territories have confirmed their participation and will include the theme "Connecting Minds, Creating The Future", with sub-themes being "Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity.

Important Note: Because of the Chinese Wuhan Virus pandemic, the event has been postponed to 01.10.2021, but the name of the Expor will continue to be Expo-2020 for branding and marketing purposes. This is the first time that the World exposition has been postponed, rather than cancelled.

The Expo-2020 Dubai Mascots:

Rashid, Latifa and Salama the Ghaf Tree are the mascots of Expo-2020, Dubai.

The wise Ghaf Tree Salama:

About the Ghaf Tree: The beautiful Ghaf Tree is an evergreen tree of the desert! In 2008 it was declared the National Tree of the UAE because of its great cultural and traditional significance. The Ghaf is a drought-tolerant tree, able to withstand the harsh desert environment and still remain green. It can be found on low sand dunes and its presence is an indicator that there is water underground. The Ghaf can live upto 120 years.

The Ghaf is a keystone species having multiple beneficial uses from combating desertification and improving soil fertility in arid environments to being an essential food source, as well as, fuel, shelter and medicine for both humans and animal species. Many birds build their nests on the Ghaf - like, Desert Eagle Owl, Brown-necked raven, Yellow-throated sparrow and Long-legged Buzzards.

It is sought by the Bedouins for its seeds and its leaves were once used instead of rice, its extended pods provide food for animals which in turn supply milk, butter, cheese and meat. The Ghaf woodlands also support large populations of insects, which in turn provide food for reptiles, birds and small mammals.

This sturdy, evergreen tree can withstand prolonged drought and high salinity, tapping water deep in the sands. The seedpods of the Ghaf contain a sweet pulp, locally known as "khoka", which are also eaten by nearly all livestock and humans and salads can be made from the leaves - a delicacy in the UAE.

Other important uses include providing wood for construction and medicinal properties.

About the Ghaf Tree Salama: If each of the Ghaf Tree Salama's leaves could speak, they would fill the wind with magnificent tales. A beacon of life against the vast barren desert, Salama, the wise and powerful Ghaf Tree, has been a place of refuge for travellers for countless years.

Her branches bore witness to the formation of the UAE and now it is time for her to pass the knowledge on to the next generation.

Now it is up to Rashid and Latifa to complete Salama's challenges and unlock her ancient secrets.

Rashid, Latifa and Salama the Ghaf Tree passing on her wisdom to the two siblings

Rashid, Latifa & the three robots

About Rashid:

Nine year old Rashid might have his head in the clouds, but when it comes to saving the environment, there is no one more grounded.

His younger sister Latifa might be better at science and technology, but Rashid would much rather pitch a tent in the desert, stare into the night sky and imagine himself soaring among the stars.

Rashid also loves family stories and has memorised tales that have been passed down from generation to generation.

About Latifa:

Latifa is the next Einstein in the making. She is always reinventing the world around her.

Passionate about science and technology, she doesn't believe in the word "impossible" and neveraccepts "no" for an answer - even when Rashid thinks she probably should.

Always racing to take on the next challenge, if you cannot keep up with her, then you will definitely be left behind.

Alif - Mobility Pavilion Guardian:

Alif is definitely the leader of the Guardians - or at least he thinks so.

But one thing is for sure, in terms of getting you where you need to go, he cannot be beat.Whether you are digging to the core of the Earth or surfing stardust on cosmic waves, this shapeshifting robot will take you there.

Opti - Opportunity Pavilion Guardian:

Wherever this friendly robot's little wheels take him, opportunity and hope follow closely behind.

But one should not be fooled by his dimunitive stature, because laying in his core is a portal through space and time.

Terra - Sustainability Pavilion Guardian":

The sharpest and smartest of the guardians, you will definitely not want to get on Terra's bad side - especially when she turns invisible.

Always ready with a retort, it may take a little while for her to warm up to you, but once she does, she will be your fiercest and most loyal guide.

It is the same loyalty that she uses to protect nature and instantly unearth its deepest secrets.
