The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has issued a 100 Dirham Commemorative Banknote won 28.11.2018 which celebrate the Centenary Anniversary of the birth of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918-2004), the ruler of Abu Dhabi for 38 years.

The Front of the 100 Dirham Commemorative Banknote depicts the Al Fahidi Fort in Dubai, which is seen on the right side of the Banknote.

Al Fahidi Fort:

Some of the old cannon kept outside the Fort/Museum

The Al Fahidi Fort was built in 1787 as the residence of the monarch and a fort of defence, as it sat on the border of the urban Dubai at that time.

Later on this fort turned into an arsenal for artillery and weapons. It was also used as a prison for outlaws.

During the reign of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, this fort was renovated.

In 1971, (the year the United Arab Emirates Federation was formed), it was converted into a museum that displays the history of Dubai and its original heritage.

In 1995, another underground museum was established and added to the old fort.

The Back of the 100 Dirham Commemorative Banknote differs from the ordinary circulation type 100 Dirham Banknote and includes an image of the Sheikh Zayed Bridge designed by the late Zaha Hadid.

The Sheikh Zayed bridge: is a suspension bridge known for its intricate construction and dramatic lighting. The bridge  construction began in  2007. The 842 metre-long, 64 metre-high and 61 metre-wide bridge between Abu Dhabi Island and the mainland was completed in 2011.

Its structure consists of several arching waves of reinforced concrete which support a four-lane highway.

The year of issue is shown below the depiction of the Zayed Bridge in Western numerals.

Other features of the Banknote:

The predominantly red Banknote with dimensions of 155 mm x 66 mm was printed at the Central Bank of the UAE's  new printing facility located at Khalifa Industrial Zone of Abu Dhabi, which is operated by the Oumolat Security Printing Company.

The Commemorative Banknote resembles the same Banknote introduced into circulation earlier this year, but also includes the logo celebrating the Centenary of the Zayed Birth Anniversary. The logo is placed above the image of the Al Fahidi Fort.

The year of issue is mentioned in Arabic numerals and is placed just below the denomination of the Banknote.

About Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918-2004):

He was the founding father and the principal driving force behind the formation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and became the Union's first President, a post which he held for almost 33 years.

Sheikh Zayed is popularly referred to as the "Father of the Nation".

At the time of Sheikh Zayed's birth, the sheikhdom of Abu Dhabi was one of seven "Trucial States" or "Group of Tribal Confederations" located along the lower coast of the Persian Gulf and was a British Protectorate from 1820 until 01.12.1971.

In 1968, the United Kingdom ended its protectorate status over the Trucial Coast.

The principle of the Union was first agreed between the ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who had succeeded as Ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966 and the Ruler of Dubai.

Bahrain and Qatar dropped out of the discussions, leaving only six emirates to agree on the union on 18.07.1971.

On 02.12.1971, Abu Dhabi, together with Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah joined in the Act of Union to officially form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The seventh emirate - Ras Al Khaimah - joined the Union on 10.02.1972.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was elected the Emirate's first President of the Union by the Federal Supreme Council on the same day the treaty took effect

The term of office lasts for five years, but as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi customarily also holds the Presidency of the UAE, the office is de facto hereditary and as such, upon the passing away of Sheikh Zayed,  Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan succeeded his father on 03.12.2004 to the post.

A circulation type one-Dirham coin was also issued by the Central Bank, which includes the stylised effigy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan on the Obverse and is modelled on the official logo celebrating the centenary anniversary.

The specifications of this coin are the same as the currently circulating Dirham.

The Reverse Design has remained unchanged.
