The Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Casa Real de la Moneda has brought out commemorative coins on 20.11.2019,  that celebrate the Bicentenary of one of the world's most renowned and respected museums - the famed Prado.

The Reverse of the 30 Euro Silver coin, placed against a background image of the "Nacional Museo del Prado"

On 19.11.1819, the "Museo del Prado" first opened to the public, when it was conceived as the Royal Museum of Painting and sculpture. At this time, it was having a collection of over 311 paintings from the Royal Collection, all of which were made by Spanish artists.

By 1868, the Royal Museum became known as the National Museum of Painting and Sculpture, and later as the "National Museo del Prado".

Over the many decades, this extraordinary institution has become one of the main repositories of Western pictorial memory and recording, a fundamental point of reference for Spanish culture and art.

It is uniquely rich in paintings by many European Masters from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Its primary attraction lies in the vast presence of Velazquez, El Greco, Goya - who is the most widely represented artist in the museum.

Tiziano, Rubens, Bosch, Munillo, Ribera, Zurbaran, Fra Angelico, Rafael, Veronese, Tintoretto, Patinir, Antonio Moro, Van Dyck and Poussin are some of the other painters/artists, whose works are prominently displayed in the museum.

The year 2019 celebrates the Bicentebary Anniversary of the establishment of the Museum.

The Museo del Prado after crossing this important milestone is reflecting on what the future brings and the forthcoming challenges for it and the other great museums of ancient paintings, as well as, the crucial  level of awareness and interest in both the preservation and public display of some of the world's most beautiful works of art.

The Commemorative Coins:

On the occasion of the Bicentenary milestone of the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, new collector Silver Coins have been brought out by the Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Real Casa de la Moneda.

On the Reverse of the 30 Euro Silver Coin is seen a reproduction of a fragment of Diego Rodriguez Silva y Velazquez's "Las Meninas" painting, which is part of the Museo Nacional del Prado's collection.

To the right, there is a QR digital Code, which can be read by a mobile device with a specific reader, cleverly linking to a web page with information about the characteristics of the coin. Below the QR Code is the mint mark of the Madrid Mint - "M" below a crown.

To the left of the primary design is the inscription - "MUSEO DEL PRADO 200 ANOS" (meaning "Prado Museum 200th Anniversary"). The denomination of the Coin "30 Euro" appears above the primary design.

The outer periphery is beaded with uniformly placed dots.

On the Obverse of the 30 Euro Silver Coin are the conjoined effigies of King Filipe VI and Queen Letizia, facing left. On the upper periphery is inscribed "FELIPE VI Y LETIZIA", while on the lower periphery is inscribed the country name - "ESPANA" and the year of issue "2019.

The specifications of this coin are:

Denomination: 30 Euro; Metal Composition: .925 Silver (Ag); Weight: 18.0 grams; Diameter/Size: 33.0 mm; Coin Quality: Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) with applied colour on the Reverse; Mintage: 5,000 pieces; Year of issue: 2019.
