954) The Red Dragon, an issue from Niue Island: minted by the New Zealand Mint: The "Mythical Dragons of the World Coin Series": The first Silver 5 Dollars selectively coloured Coin in the series  features the Red Dragon of Vortigern: Year of issue: 2019:

The fierce and  triumphant Red Dragon features on the first release in this new Dragons Coin Collection.

Legend has it that, following the brutal murders of a large number of Briton leaders by the Saxons, the wise men of King Vortigern advised him to seek out a place where he might build a safe fortress.

After searching what remained of his realm for a suitable site, Vortigern finally chose a rocky, wooded hill near Snowdon, Dinas Ffaraon. The King gave the command for work to commence on building the fortress' walls, but each night, the newly built wall would be destroyed.

Day after day, this would happen, until Vortigern was forced to seek the help of sorcerers and magicians. They advised him that the castle walls should be sprinkled with the blood of a child without a natural father, in order to appease whatever dark power was hindering the construction of the fortress.

A search was launched and eventually a fatherless boy Myrddin Emrys (or Merlin) was found. He was brought before Vortigern who told him of the fate he intended to inflict upon him.

However, the boy, Merlin, managed to convince Vortigern that his advisers were wrong and that it was two dragons under a lake inside the mountain that were destroying the foundations of his fortress. The King commanded his labourers to dig deep into the mountain. They did as they were told and discovered an underground lake, just as predicted.

Once drained, the red and white dragons that lay sleeping there awoke and began a fierce battle, with the red dragon ultimately defeating the white dragon. The boy then prophesised that the red dragon's triumph symbolised the Briton's future victory over the Saxons, who were symbolised by the white dragon.

The boy's life was spared and he became famous as Merlin the Wizard in the tales of King Arthur and the Pendragons. The Pendragons also adopted the Red Dragon as their standard/flag and it has survived to the present day as the representative flag/standard of Wales.
