795) "The Moon": The Earth and Beyond Series": Royal Australian Mint (RAM) issues the second coin in the three-coin Series, a Silver Coloured  Five (AUD) Dollars Concave- shaped (Domed) Coin on 03.09.2018:

The Royal Australian Mint (RAM) has released its second silver collector coin, which is a part of their three-coin Series titled "The Earth and Beyond" that looks at space travel and the wonders of the heavens.

The Silver $5 (AUD)  dome shaped coin placed against the background of deep space as viewed from planet Earth

After their first release of a domed coin in the series which depicted the Earth as seen from space, this new coin celebrates the "Moon" - planet earth's closest celestial companion.

This coin focusses on the Moon, our familiar night companion which has inspired generations for all time. It was on 21.07.1969 that man first stepped on the moon. The first successful team of astronauts was that  of Neil Armstrong (first man to walk on the moon) and  Edwin E. Aldrin (Lunar module pilot and second man to walk on the moon) was  followed by 10 other humans who walked on the moon's surface , until the last manned flight to the Moon took place in December 1972.

This achievement which was essentially the result of a space race between the USA and the then USSR has thrilled and inspired new generations of scientists and astronomers, with a better understanding of our Universe.

India's own lunar mission - the "Chandrayaan" was the first spacecraft to discover water on the moon. Who knows at a later date - humankind may inhabit our closest neighbour, an idea which thrills and may become a reality sometime.

The Coin:

The Reverse of the $5 (AUD) Silver coin depicting the Moon

The "2019" dated $5 (AUD) Silver Proof Moon Coin is the second in the in the coin series titled "Earth and Beyond" and is the first concave coin to include colour in its design.

The peripheral inscriptions are - "THE EARTH AND BEYOND - THE MOON - FIVE DOLLARS".

Together with the convex shape, which adds depth and accuracy to the design, colour has been applied on the convex surface - a first for this particular shape - resulting in a more realistic depiction of the Moon that is also enhanced on a domed convex surface.

The Obverse of the $5 (AUD) Silver Coin

The Obverse show an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right designed by Ian Rank-Broadley whose initials "IRB" appear below the Queen's neck. The effigy is surrounded by the eight planets in their orbits in our solar system. The Central motif represents the Sun.

The peripheral inscriptions are "ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA - ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER".

The specifications of this coin are:

Denomination: $5 (AUD); Metal Composition: .999 Fine Silver (Ag); Weight: 31.1 grams or one Oz.; Diameter/Size: 39.62 mm; Coin Quality: Proof with applied colour; Maximum mintage: 5,000 pieces; Year of issue: 2018 (but engraved as 2019 on the coin).

The coin is displayed in a beautiful presentation case along with a numbered/serialised Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
