799) 100th Anniversary of the Death of Klimt-Schiele-Moser-Wagner: (1918 - 2018): A set (Block) of four stamps of 80 cents each brought out by Osterreichische Post (Austrian Post) on 24.08.2018:
1918 - A fateful year for Viennese Modernism:
In 1918, four of the most important artists of the modern age - Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Koloman Moser and Otto Wagner - passed away.
The period around 1900 was a golden age for art and culture in Vienna.
In 1897, the Association of artists known as the "Wiener Sezession" (meaning the "Vienna Secession") was founded. Its motto was "Ver Sacrum" (meaning "Sacred Spring"), which was the title of an important art journal and symbolised the "hope of a new awakening in art". The group encouraged all styles of art - traditional or innovative and had Pallas Athene, the Greek Goddess of just causes, wisdom and the arts, as its symbol.
In the field of handicrafts, the "Weiner Werkstatte" strove to expand art into an everyday context; the decorative "Jugendstil", with its sweeping lines and floral elements, superseded historicism and expressionism started to develop.
About the four artists -
Otto Wagner: Born in 1841, Otto Wagner's buildings still give Vienna much of its character even today.
Whilst historic buildings still predominate in Vienna's Ringstrabe, his Postal Savings Bank building, the Kirche am Steinhof church and the pavilion on the Karlsplatz demonstrate the emergence of the Jugendstil.
Wagner also designed the Viennese light urban railway, much of which is still in use today as the underground system.
Gustav Klimt: was born in 1862 and was the first president of the Vienna secession. One of his main works - the Beethoven Frieze - is also displayed in the Secession building.
He was a symbolist painter and is noted for his murals, sketches and other "objets d'art" (meaning "works of art"). His primary subject was the female body and his works are marked by a frank erotism.
His best-known works globally include "The Kiss", "the Golden Adele" and his landscapes of the Attersee region.
The Austrian Mint had brought out a Series of five 50 Euro Gold Coins titled "Klimt and his Women" on five of his most famous paintings one each per year from 2012 to 2016 ( 2012 marked Klimt's 150th Birth Anniversary) - "Adele Bloch-Bauer" I (2012), "The Expectation" (2013), "Judith II" (2014), Medicine (2015) and "The Kiss" (2016). Koloman Moser: He was born in 1868 and is mostly known as a graphic designer and an artisan. He designed many posters, book covers, post-cards, bank notes and even stamps.
He also designed furniture, glasses and textiles, as well as glass windows like that for the Kirche am Steinhof.
Egon Schiele: He was born in 1890. He soon turned his back on the Jugendstil and played a significant role in the development of expressionism in Austria. His nude drawings and self-portraits in particular, demonstrate his genius and his characteristic use of colour and form.
