2) The Tropics (Climates of Earth) Coin Series: The second "tri-material Coin - with an outer ring, inner core and an embossable red polymer ring: Innovative Coin issued by the Federal Republic of Germany on 27.04.2017

On 09.11.2016, the Federal Republic of Germany planned to mint a 5 Euro Collector's coin with a red polymer ring.

This "tri-material" coin issued by Germany on 27.04.2017, had the theme " Tropical Climate Zone". This coin is the first in a five-part series titled " Climate Zones of the earth" (2017 - 2021, one coin being issued every  year) and is linked to the first innovative 5 Euro Coin "Planet Earth", (which marked a global premier with its translucent, coloured polymer ring in 2016).

The five coin series includes:

2017  "Tropical Climate Zone" - Red Polymer Ring

2018  "Sub-Tropical Climate Zone" - Orange " "

2019   "Temperate Climate Zone" - Green " "

2020   "Sub-polar Climate Zone" - Turquoise " "

2021   " Polar Climate Zone" - Violet       "    "

As with the coin issued in 2016, this 5 Euro Polymer Coin consisted of three components - outer/external metallic ring, an inner metallic core and an embossable red polymer ring. This coin was also the Germany's second ever 5 Euro coin (and the first one in this Series) to be issued by the country.

The Obverse and Reverse of the "Tri-material coin" placed against a background of a tropical island/zone

The red ring is partially translucent and is permeable to light. The ring has been inserted between the metal components and forms a permanent bond. At the same time, the ring evokes the coin's motif "Tropical Climate Zone" in a striking way.

The Obverse of the 5 Euro Coin shows a parrot's special bird's-eye view from above immersing the observer in the tropical zone along with the giant trees. The parrot is a symbol of the bio-diversity of the tropics.

These realistic elements are combined with a distinctive impression of a tropical zone with its perennially damp rain-forest. The red ring defines the transition into an airy open space which makes the coin gleam effectively.

The inscription on the lower periphery is - "TROPISCHE ZONE", highlighting the theme of the coin.

The common Reverse of the 5 Euro Coin shows the German Eagle emblem, the country name "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" (in German) on the lower periphery, face value "5 EURO" on the upper periphery, the 12 stars of the European Union (EU), representing the countries which had initially joined the EU and the year of issue "2017".

The coin is legal tender in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The specifications of this coin are:
