a) About Vietrenica Cave:

Vjetrenica is the largest and most well-known cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the South-eastern part of the country, on the very West end of the Popovo Firleds in Ravno municipality.

The beauty of the underwater water-courses and water-falls, chambers and passages is quite spell-binding. The Cave is also unique in the sense that it has a forceful "wind" or an "air flow" through which the interior and exterior air temperature remains equalised.

The Myth:

The mythological stories of Vjetrenica relate to the Vilino Guvno ( meaning "Fairy plain"), where fairies would sing and dance the fairy dance. All the dancing activities centred around the most prominent of the fairies named - Vjetrenica.

Written records of the Duke of Ston, Duke Sorkocevic from 1582 testify that - "People of the land say that in that cave live nymphs, in our language they would be called fairies that during the night  arrange dances" and that the " Fairies are girls of unspeakable beauty and noble attributes and they made bonds with young people, protected them and cured them with therapeutic herbs".

b) The Heather (Calluna vulgaris):

This is an evergreen bushy plant with white, pink, purple or red flowers. It blooms from July to September and can grow from 20 cm to 50 cm in height.

It is appreciated as a therapeutic plant and in the area around Popovo fields is very prominent/dominant. This much sought after therapeutic honey is usually added to warm tea and is considered to be very healthy.
