738) Three-toed Sloth: "Wildlife of Nicaragua" Coin Series: Second Coin in the Series: 100 Cordobas Silver Proof Coin issued by the Banco Central de Nicaragua on 08.06.2018, minted by the New Zealand Mint:

The Banco Central de Nicaragua has issued its second coin in their exciting new on-going Collector Coin Series titled "Wildlife of Nicaragua" launched in April 2018. This coin imaginatively combines the coloured, indolent three-toed Sloth amongst a detailed engraving of its native forest habitat.

About the Three-toed Sloth

The Three-toed Sloth is an indigenous species found in many countries in Central America, particularly in Nicaragua.

The Sloth is the slowest mammal in the world, so sedentary that algae grow on its fur. Its height varies between 40 cm to 75 cm.

It is a solitary and nocturnal animal, whose life revolves around sleeping on tree branches, hanging on with its long, curved claws and feeding on leaves, stems, buds and fruit from the tree-tops it inhabits. Its greenish colour, a result of the tropical climate in Central America and slow movements provide an effective camouflage in the Nicaraguan forest canopy.

However, their slow movements leave them vulnerable to other animals in the forest who hunt them as a source of food.
