791) 500 Pesos Banknote: issued by the Banco de Mexico under its new G" Series of Banknotes on 28.08.2018:

Banco de Mexico  has launched its new "G" Series of Banknotes with the issue of a new 500 Peso Banknote on 28.08.2018.

The new Banknotes will feature three important changes being introduced in Mexican Banknotes - new designs, colours and themes.

The new Banknotes will also incorporate new and updated security features, which were last introduced in presently circulating Banknotes about 20 years ago.

The Front designs of the new series of Banknotes will emphasise upon the various chapters of Mexican Heritage and history - from its origins as a Spanish colony to an independent Republic whose status was initially achieved in 1810.

The historical chapters will focus on Old Mexico, the Colony, Independence, Reformation and Restoration of the republic, the Revolution and finally Contemporary Mexico.

While the Front of each Banknote will feature historical chapters in Mexico, the Back designs will highlight the six most representative eco-systems of Mexican Geography. Featured on the Backs will be rivers and lakes, temperate and dry forests, thickets or trees and deserts, coasts, seas and islands and rain forests. Each scene or location will be recognised sites on the World Heritage list of UNESCO. Also included on the Back will be an element of fauna and flora identified with each one of the six eco-systems.

Interestingly, the presently circulating 20 Peso Banknotes which presently feature President Don Benito Juarez (1806-1972) are being withdrawn/discontinued and will now circulate only as a bimetallic 20 Peso coin which has already been introduced into circulation since 1996.

The image of President Juarez is however being taken on the 500 Peso denomination in the "G" Series of Banknotes, and will replace internationally renowned artist Diego Rivera (1886-1957) which figures in the presently circulating Banknote series.

While the 20 Peso Banknote is being discontinued, there is a provision for introduction of a 2,000 Peso Banknote in future within the "G" Series of Banknotes, as and when Banco de Mexico deems it necessary depending on the state of the economy.

While the 500 Pesos Banknote has been circulated on 28.08.2018, the Banco de Mexico is scheduling the release of the complete series over a period of five years. The issue of the 200 Peso and 1,000 Peso Banknotes will take place in the second half of 2019 and 2020 respectively.

The new 500 Pesos Banknote:

The Front of the new 500 Pesos Banknote issued under the "G" Series of Banknotes on 28.08.2018

The Front of the new 500 Peso Banknote depicts the effigy of President Don Benito Juarez and is accompanied by a fragment of the engraving from the Mexican artist Alberto Beltran who has portrayed Juarez's triumphant entry into Mexico City on 15.07.1867.

Additionally, it is this date that marks the end of the Second Empire, formally headed by Emperor Maximillian and marks the restoration of the Republic.

The effigy of President Don Benito Juarez has repeatedly been seen on Mexican national currency - on both coins and banknotes - as he is universally remembered and admired for his defence of sovereignty, national, liberal and republican values, as well as, his unrelenting effort to move from a country of confrontations and instability to one of laws and institutions.

The Back of the new 500 Pesos Banknote issued under the "G" Series of Banknotes

The Back of the 500 Peso Banknote depicts the eco-system of seas and islands, represented by the El Biosphere Reserve Vizcaino, which is located on the peninsula of Baja California Sur. This reservation was declared a natural area and has been a protected area/region since 1988. This region and location are   considered a "Natural Heritage of Humanity" site by UNESCO. With its five kilometres of coastal strip, the Reserve of the Biosphere of El Vizcaino is an important sanctuary for the Gray Whale species.

The dimensions of this Banknote are 146 mm x 65.0 mm and its predominant colour is blue with various corresponding colour under-prints.

The Banknote is printed on cotton-based fibre paper and includes the date "19 MAY 2017".

The upgraded security features include:

Watermark - When viewed from the face, a watermark of the portrait of Benito Juarez is placed to the right of Juarez's effigy.

Multi-coloured application - The Banknote's numeral of 500 which is placed in the upper right corner, changes colour when tilted. The Banknote's denomination is also seen within the numbers.

Holographic security strip - A segmented and holographic vertical strip seen near the far left half of the Banknote displays moving numerals of "500" when the Banknote is tilted.

Tactile Features - As part of the identification process for visually challenged persons, a series of horizontal dashes can be felt, which are located on the upper half of the Banknote towards the edges.

790) Indus Valley Civilisation in Daimabad, (Maharashtra): A Special Postal Cover brought out by the Maharashtra Postal Circle of India Post on 15.12.2017:

790) Indus Valley Civilisation in Daimabad, (Maharashtra): A Special Postal Cover brought out by the Maharashtra Postal Circle of India Post on 15.12.2017:

This Special Cover is titled "Sindhu Ghati Sabhyata, Dayamabad (Maharashtra)" (in Hindi) and "Indus Valley Civilisation in Daimabad (Maharashtra)" (in English)

The Special Cover at left displays artefacts excavated in the Archaeological digs by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) viz - a two bullock driven carriage sculpture found in Daimabad (details given elsewhere below), artistically decorated pottery-ware, a seal and a bust of a priest-king with his officious expression and embossed robes.

At right is a 500 Paise (or Rs.5/-) stamp of Shrimad Rajchandraji issued in 2017.

The Stamp has been cancelled with a hand-stamp depicting a Indus Valley Civilisation Seal in the centre and "Sindhu Ghati Sabhyata" (in Hindi) and "Indus Valley Civilisation" (in English) on the top.

The Cancellation is of Pune Head Office and is dated "15.12.2017".

In the top centre is the logo of the "Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan" (meaning "Clean India Mission") with its slogan "Ek Kadam Swacchta Ki Ore" (meaning "A Step Towards Cleanliness").
On the Back of the Special Cover is given a description of the theme of this Cover:

"Indus Valley Civilisation in Daimabad (Maharashtra) : (The) Ancient Indus Valley Civilisation was wide-spread - from "Alamgirpur" (Uttar Pradesh) in the East to "Sutkagan Dor" on the borders of Iran-Pakistan in the West and from "Manda" near Jammu in the North to Daimabad, Dist. Ahmednagar, Maharashtra in the South covering an area of 1500 x 1500 kilometres".

About the Indus Valley Civilisation (or the "Harappan Civilisation" or the "Sarasvati River Civilisation" or "Indus-Sarasvati Civilisation"):

The Indus Valley Civilisation was an ancient civilisation located in territories in what is Pakistan today and North-west India on the fertile plains of the Indus River extending far out.

Evidence of Farming Settlements and religious practices in this Civilisation date back to over/around 5,500 BC.

Around 3,000 BC, the signs of urbanisation and an advanced culture have been found. Aridification of this region during this period spear-headed the initial spur of urbanisation associated with the Civilisation.

By 2,600 BC, several large towns  and cities had been well established.

A diorama of life in the Indus Valley Civilisation in the Indian Science and Technology Gallery in the National Science Centre, New Delhi

Between 2,500 and 2,000 BC, the Indus Valley Civilisation was at its peak. At its peak, the Indus Valley civilisation boasted of a population of over five million (50,00,000) inhabitants living in over 1,022 cities and settlements (found so far) mainly in the general region of the Indus and Ghaggar-Hakra Rivers and their tributaries - of which 406 sites are in present day Pakistan and 616 sites are in India.

The major urban settlements/centres of the Civilisation excavated so far include -  Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro (UNESCO World Heritage site), Dholavira, Ganeriwala and Rakhigarhi.

Archaeological ruins of Mohenjo-Daro, a well planned urban city

Two cities, in particular have been excavated at the sites of Mohenjo-Daro on the lower Indus and at Harappa, further upstream which have unearthed evidence of a highly developed city life with large residential buildings.

The Indus Valley Civilisation cities are noted for their urban planning, baked brick houses, while, many houses had wells and bathrooms, water supply systems, as well as, an elaborate underground drainage system.

The social conditions of the citizens were found to be much superior  than  those of their contemporaries living in Sumeria, Babylon and Egypt. These cities of the Indus Valley Civilisation display a well-planned urbanisation system.

A well-planned brick lined pool with steps leading to the bottom excavated in Dholavira

Along with ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley Civilisation was one of the three early cradles of civilisation of the Old World and of the three, the most wide-spread.

There is evidence of contact between the Indus Valley Civilisation and the Near East. Commercial, religious and artistic connections have been recorded in Sumerian documents, where the Indis Valley people are referred to as "Meluhhaites" and the Indus Valley is called "Meluhha".

The Indus Civilisation had a writing system which today is a subject of mystery and much research, as all attempts to decipher it have failed. This is one of the reasons why the Indus Valley Civilisation is one of the least known of the important early civilisations of antiquity.

Examples of this writing/language have been found in new techniques in handicraft (carmelion products, seal carvings) and metallurgy (copper, bronze, lead and tin). Excellent examples of pottery, amulets, carved stamp seals, weights and copper tablets have been found. Children's toys were found in the cities, with a few weapons of war, suggesting peace and prosperity.

The trade seals are decorated with animals and mythical beings and indicate a thriving business/trade with lands as far away as Sumer in Southern Mesopotamia.

Trade Seals of the Indus Valley Civilisation

                                    A jar excavated at Harappa

Whether the cities and towns of the Indus Valley civilisation were in the nature of independent city-states or part of a larger kingdom, because their language has remained undisciphered. Further, as no sculptures of rulers nor depictions of battles and military campaigns have been found, evidence in regard to their warfare/battle capabilities/campaigns has not been found/substantiated.

By 1800 BC, the Indus Valley civilisation began to decline. Their writings started to disappear, standardised weights and measures used for trade and taxation purposes fell out of use and the connection with the Near East became sparse.

Although the reasons for this decline are not entirely clear, but it was possibly due to the drying up of the "Sarasvati River", a process which began around 1800 BC. There is also the possibility of a great flood in this area. Either one of these events would have had catastrophic effects on the agricultural activity, making the economy no longer sustainable and disrupting the civic order of the cities.

Around 1,500 BC, a large group of nomadic cattle-herders - recorded as the Aryans - is said to have migrated into the region of the Indus Valley Civilisation, who crossed the Hindu-Kush mountains and came in contact with the Indus Valley Civilisation. This was possibly a large-scale migration (which used to be seen as an invasion and the reason for the collapse of the Indus Valley Civilisation, but this hypothesis is not accepted by many researchers today, who do not believe that the Aryans came as an invasion force, but came as peaceful settlers).

Be that as it may, the great Indus Valley Civilisation came to an end.  The new settlers in the region introduced Indo-European languages in the Indian sub-continent, religious practices and the caste division.

Daimabad (Dist. Ahmednagar), Maharashtra:

Daimabad is a deserted village and an archaeological site on the left bank of the Pravara River, a tributary of the Godavari River in Shrimampur Taluka in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.

Daimabad is the largest Chalcolithic or Copper age site (2,200 - 1,000 BC) in Maharashtra, discovered by archaeologist BP Bopardikar in 1956 and the site has been excavated three times in all. Evidence suggests that the last inhabitant who lived there deserted the site at the beginning of the 1st Millennium BC. The site has been untouched by human habitation since then.

Discoveries in Daimbad suggest that Late Harappan culture extended into the Deccan Plateau. Daimabad is famous for the recovery of many bronze items, some of which were influenced by the Harappan culture (1,800 BC-1,600 BC).

During the Harappan  period the walls of the houses were made of black clay with their foundations in black soil. Large patches of finely plastered floors were found in some of the houses. The houses were arranged on either side of a 30-50 centimetres thick wall made of clay.

The main ware was a fine red ware with linear and geometric designs painted on it in black pigment. Its shape included dishes-on-stand, bowls-on-stand, dishes and vases. The most significant discoveries from this period were two terra-cotta button-shaped seals with Harappan writings and four inscribed potsherds.

Other artefacts found included stone tools such as microlithic blades, beads of gold, stone and terracotta, bangles of shell and a terracotta measuring scale.

A very interesting discovery was made in 1974, when a local farmer, while digging at the base of a shrub for firewood, found four bronze objects :

An image of the sculpture of a chariot driven by a man with two oxen yoked to it

- a sculpture of a chariot, 45.0 cm long and 16.0 cm wide, yoked to two oxen, driven by a man 16.0 cm high standing on it. (Bullock cart races featuring similar participants, are still being held in Maharashtra and are quite popular)

- a sculpture of a water buffalo, 31.0 cm high and 25.0 cm long standing on a four-legged platform attached to four solid wheels

- a 25.0 cm high sculpture of an elephant on a platform 27.0 cm long and 14.0 cm wide similar to the water buffalo sculpture, but axles and wheels missing

- a sculpture of a rhinoceros 19.0 cm high and 25.0 cm long standing on two horizontal bars, each attached to an axle of two solid wheels.

The sculpture of the man riding an elaborate chariot drawn by two yoked bulls has been the subject of much debate:

The two wheels of the chariot are solid and there is a dog standing on the central pole just in front of the man. The platform on which the man is standing is truncated and oval in shape and on either side of the man is a pair of birds facing opposite directions. Stylistically, these items are related to the terracotta bird whistles found in Harappan sites.

It is believed that the man himself is a proto-Australiod, similar to the terracotta figurines found in Kalibangan - a contemporary Harappan site. The man has a broad, snub nose with wide nostrils and a thick protruding lower lip. His hair is gathered at the back in a sort of elongated roll, but he looks more like a bald man with thick masses of hair on the side and at the back of his head - probably a hair-style prevalent in those days.

Interestingly, he is wearing no garments, in the style of athletes in the ancient Olympics and there is a vertical projection in his lower abdomen suggesting a representation of a proto-phallic cult ("linga") perhaps even an early depiction of a deity that later became Lord Shiva.

There are theories that suggest that the Daimabad sculpture of a man riding a bull driven chariot is the precursor of "Pashupati" (meaning "the "Lord of the Beasts"), similar to the one found in a seal from Mohenjo-Daro. Another suggestion/aspect that links the Daimabad man to Shiva is the fact that his chariot is driven by bulls - just as Shiva is associated with Nandi, his Bull.

The mysterious sculpture of the Daimabad Man riding his chariot gives us a view into the life and beliefs of an advanced civilisation which have been fascinating researchers  no end, without letting them onto its "secrets".
