1) Coins of Canada, minted by the Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint has issued its second coin in the 3-Coin Series titled "Canadian Coasts" which will feature references from all three of Canada's coastal lines and includes designs which represent the unique cultural character, history and beauty of each coast - Pacific, Atlantic and The Arctic.

Whether in the East or the west, or the "True North strong and free", there is something magical about Canada's shores - from the polar regions to the often calm South-west jet stream of the Pacific coast, to the unpredictable, but naturally pristine Atlantic shores.

Representing the land, sea and sky, the highly symbolic images included in the designs of these three coins are arranged in a concentric pattern that also resembles the points of a compass. The design is the same even when the coin is turned.

More about the Arctic North:

Northern Canada represents 40% of the nation's total land mass.

Paleo-Eskimos were the earliest to explore and adapt to life in the Canadian Arctic, around 4,000 years ago.

Roughly half of Canada's total Caribou population are barren-ground Caribou, which famously migrate in large herds;their range extends from Yukon through the Central and eastern regions of the Notrh-west Territories and a large part of Nunavat (including Baffin Island).

The Reverse of the 3 Dollar Silver Coin with selective gold plating

A familiar feature of navigational charts, a compass rose lies at the centre of the Arctic-themed Reverse, where it represents a history of exploration in Canada's North.

Two finely engraved icons of the Arctic surround the compass rose - the Caribou and the Inunnguaq - a form of Inukshuk.

The highly symbolic imagery is arranged in a pattern that also resembles the points of a compass. The design is the same, even when the coin is turned.

Seen in profile, the antlered icon of the Northern wilderness is a fundamental part of the traditional way of life for millennia.

Selective gold-plating frames the Reverse and also places special emphasis on the Inukshuk - a stone landmark that has traditionally carried spiritual and practical meaning for the Inuit.
