Evolution of Chess as a game:

Chess originated in India, where its early form in the 6th Century was "Chaturanga" (meaning "four divisions of the military") - infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariots, represented respectively by pawn, knight, bishop and rook. In Persia, around the 7th Century, the name of the game was "Shatranj". In Spanish the game is called "Ajedrez" and in Greek "Zatrikon" The game reached Western Europe and Russia in the 9th Century AD and by the next century had spread all over Europe.

Around 1200 AD, the rules of Shatranj began to be modified and by about 1475, major changes had taken place in the game which have carried on to the present day.

By the 18th Century, Chess had become a rgage all over Europe and several European Cafes became centres of chess games as a pastime. Later many chess clubs, chess organisations, journals popularised the game all over the world.

Chess is today a very popular sport. Millions of people on the Globe play this ancient, intellectual game.

About the Chess Olympiad and FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs):

The first Chess Olympiad was an unofficial one. In 1924, an attempt was made to include Chess in the Olympic Games being held in Paris, but did not succeed because of problems with distinguishing between amateur and professional players.

As such, an unofficial Chess Olympiad also took place in Paris. FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs)was formed on 20.07.1924, the closing day of the fist unofficial Chess Olympiad, which has been recognised by the International Olympic committee as an International Sports Federation in 1999. This day (20th July), is also recognised as the "International Day of Chess".

FIDE organised the first official Chess Olympiad in 1927 which took place in London. There were 16 participating nations in the 1st Chess Olympiad. Another unofficial Chess Olympiad was held in Budapest, Hungary in 1926, while the second official Chess Olympiad was held in Netherlands in 1928. The rest is history.

The general promotion of Chess in the world owes a great deal to competitions officially known as the "Tournament of Nations" and more popularly as the "Chess Olympiads". This later title has been accepted so widely, that the official name has been almost forgotten. This is quite understandable, given the fact that Olympiads date back over 3,000 years.

Today FIDE has 188 member federations and is among the biggest sports organisations in the world and organises championships for all ages, including youngsters, men, women and seniors.

Chess is an affiliate member or fully recognised by the National Olympic Committees in 117 countries and chess as a sport is recognised in 107 countries.

FIDE aims at assisting the best chess players to continue to achieve new peaks of excellence and to increase the pool of talent from which new champions would emerge.

The world Chess Federation (FIDE) has since 1950 conducted the official Chess Olympiads once every two years.
