884) Romania's Centenary Anniversary of the Great Union of 01.12.1918: A 100 Lei Commemorative Banknote issued by the Banca Nationala'a Romaniei (Central Bank of Romania) on 01.12.2018:

The Banca Nationala'a Romaniei has issued on 01.12.2018, a new commemorative 100 Lei Banknote  as part of Romania's year-long celebration of the Nation's Great Reunion on 01.12.1918.

The Great Reunion of Romania after World War I in 1918:

The Great Reunion occurred at the end of World War I in which the United Territories largely populated with Romanians from the former Austrian-Hungarian and the Russian Empire with the rest of the independent Kingdom of Romania were unified  together.

As a result of the War and the negotiations which formally concluded the fighting, the now expanded Nation-State encompassed the majority of territory which included a majority of ethnic Romanians all united into one geo-political state. Through the acquisition of Transylvania and the region of Banat from Hungary, Bukovina from Austria and Bessarabia from Russia - the country's territory almost doubled and its population now numbered more than 16.0 million citizens and included substantial minorities.

The Great Union of all Romanians was made official on 01.12.1918, when all the 1228 duly appointed representatives' signatures were placed on the Resolution of the National Assembly in Alba lulia. The choice of Alba lulia took precedence over other cities as it was an important location during the Revolution of 1848-49 and the first capital of the Romanians when Mihai Viteazul, Prince of Moldavia and de facto ruler of Transylvania managed to unite the three Romanian regions of Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldova for the first time in 1599.

The efforts of Queen Maria of Romania (1875-1938), who attended the Conference were instrumental in securing international recognition of the country's new borders.

Almost four years later, the coronation of King Ferdinand and Queen Maria of Romania took place in the specially constructed Coronation Cathedral in Alba Lulia on 15.10.1922. Although they had succeeded to the throne on 10.10.1914, the formal coronation was delayed because of World War I and the negotiations for expanding the territories of Romania.

The Commemorative Banknote:

The Commemorative Banknote was printed by the National Bank Printing Company at their facility at Bucharest.

The Front of the 100 Lei Commemorative Banknote shows the following representative graphical elements at right - the portraits of King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria, below which on two lines, their names and life spans - "REGELE FERDINAND I 1865-1927" and "REGINA MARIA 1875-1938" in the central area. There is an image depicting the Great National Assembly in Alba Lulia on 01.12.1918.

This face also depicts the Coat of Arms of Romania in the upper left part, the name of the issuing Central Bank "BANCA NATIONALA A ROMANIEI" (on the upper periphery), below which is the National Bank of Romania logo placed in a medallion. Towards the bottom are the years of commemoration - "1918-2018". The face value of the Banknote appears four times on this face, - "UNA SUTA LEI" and "LEI UNA SUTA" (in words - meaning "One hundred Lei") and twice in numerals "100".

The date of circulation of the Banknote is marked - "1 decembrie 2018", printed vertically along the right side.

The Back of the 100 Lei Commemorative Banknote features the arrival of the Royal Cortege in Bucharest on 01.12.1918 and part of the mace of King Ferdinand I, together with four women in folk costumes typical of each united Romanian province - Bessarabia, Romania, Transylvania and Bukovina.

Below the women's image is the inscription - "FALSIFICAREA ACESTOR BILETE SE PEDEPSESTE CONFORM LEGILOR" (meaning "Forgery will be punished according to the Law").

On the upper periphery is seen the name of the issuing Bank - BANCA NATIONALA A ROMANIEI". The National Bank of Romania logo is on the upper right corner and in the lower left corner.

The face value appears in words "UNA SUTA LEI" and in numerals "100".

The serial number of the Banknote is printed in letters and figures, in red and black ink - horizontally in red ink and vertically in black ink.

The specifications of this Banknote are:

Size: 147 mm x 82.0 mm; Predominant colour: Blue; Printed on: Polymer substrate in plane/relief mixed technique, with complete transparent window; Printing Limit: 10,000 Banknotes; Circulation through: Regional branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Lasi and Timisoara.

The security features of this Banknote include:

A transparent window that features the portraits of King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria, the text "ROMANIA 100", a stylised flower and portraits of the Royal Couple are applied into an integrated vertical band of variable colour whose colour changes when held against the light.

See-through Micro-text is seen on the magnetic security thread that reads "1 DECEMBRIE 1918 1 DECEMBRIE 2018".

A colour-shifting ink application used on the text "LEI UNA SUTA" which changes from golden to green when the Banknote is tilted, is shown on the face.

A latent image application of the mace of King Ferdinand I and the numeral "100" becomes visible when the Banknote is tilted and seen on the Back.

An aligned image application depicting part of the "Mihai Viteazul" Military Order, introduced by King Ferdinand I in recognition of acts of bravery during World war I, is shown on both the Front and the Back. The complete image becomes visible when the Banknote is help up against the light.

A laser micro-perforation application in the shape of the face value "100" is placed vertically in the central area.

883) New Circulation Coins Series, Kenya: introduced by the Central Bank of Kenya: on 11.12.2018:

The Central Bank of Kenya has released a new series of circulation coins that updates both the designs and brings the coins in line with a 2010 constitutional provision which legislated the removal of presidential and political portraits from all future circulation type Coins and Banknotes.

The Central Bank of Kenya invited public participation for submitting their views on the elements that they wished to see depicted on the coins. The most popular/appropriate designs which met the Bank's and user's technical requirements were taken, which were in keeping with the public's aspirations.

The President of the Republic of Kenya - Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta, who made his first visit to the Central Bank since taking office in 2013, presided over the introduction of the coins to the Nation.

The Central Bank presented a video of the new coins to the assembled audience of invited guests and the media. Thereafter the Governor of the Central Bank - Dr. Patrick Ngugi Njoroge, presented a specially struck set of the four new coins to the President.

The new coin designs bear significant aspects of the country and are positioned to serve as a means of passing knowledge, conserving culture and promoting Kenya's global uniqueness.

The new coin series retains the same diameters/sizes, weights and composite metals as the presently circulating series of coins, but unlike the older generation coins which included portraits of former presidents - Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Arap Moi, the new legal tender coinage features images of Kenya's wildlife heritage:

882) State Bank of India, Hyderabad Branch celebrated the 150th Anniversary of its setting up with the issue of a Corporate Stamp of 500 Paise (or Rs.5/-) by India Post on 19.12.2018:

882) State Bank of India, Hyderabad Branch celebrated the 150th Anniversary of its setting up with the issue of a Corporate Stamp of 500 Paise (or Rs.5/-) by India Post on 19.12.2018:

State Bank of India's Hyderabad Main Branch was established on 18.12.1869 as a branch of the Presidency Bank of Bengal.

In 1921, the three Presidency Banks - Bank of Bengal (Est. 02.06.1806), Bank of Bombay (Est. 15.04.1840) and Bank of Madras (Est. 01.07.1843) - were merged to form the Imperial Bank of India on the recommendations of the Committee of Direction, All India Rural Credit Survey.

In 01.07.1955, the Imperial Bank of India was nationalised by the Government of India to form the State Bank of India which became the main banking arm of the Government spearheading the development of the rural economy.

The early days of Hyderabad Main Branch:

The Hyderabad Main branch was opened principally to extend the business of the Bank and also to undertake the local treasury business of the government.

Initially, while the government used the branch for financing the heavy requirements of the local treasury business of the government, the European residents and rich Indians used it for all purposes of ordinary banking.

For the common man, a minimum initial deposit of Rs.200/- was required to open a current account and no credit or loan on deposit of Government paper or goods could be granted for a sum below Rs.500/-. The needs of the entire trading community were  being met by the shroffs and thus, there was little profitable employment.

The surplus funds were initially invested in government securities. However, it was soon found out that it was more profitable to lend funds to the Head Office for deployment elsewhere.

Loans were granted in the form of overdrafts or demand loans only for military of civilian officials of the Princely State or to the British Government/military officials.

Slowly and steadily, the business of the Branch began to grow. Savings Bank deposits soon became the most popular product offered with the locals and Europeans.

Presently, with state of the art technology and communications and an excellent ambience in its workplace, the Hyderabad Main Branch takes pride in serving its customers. The ties of Hyderabad Main Branch with the city of Hyderabad and its people extend to over 150 years. Based on solid foundations of trust and dependability and backed by traditions of excellence in strategy and innovation this association is poised to become even stronger in the days/years to come.

The 150th Anniversary celebrations:

The Hyderabad Main Branch celebrated the150th Anniversary milestone by felicitating customers, retired officials and staff who have banked with/worked at  the Branch.

To mark the occasion, a documentary on the evolution of State Bank of India pieced together by the Branch/Bank staff was screened and cultural activities and other programmes were also organised.

A "Mystamp" set of 12 stamps of 500 Paise (or Rs.5/-), depicting the State Bank of India, Hyderabad Main Branch

Visitors were taken round the Heritage Room of the Hyderabad Main Branch, which has been set up in the Branch to celebrate 200 years of evolution of State Bank of India (in 2006), where several historical documents like old ledgers, the ties of SBI with Hyderabad's history, emblems of the Presidency Banks, old coins/banknotes bank accounts of important customers etc are showcased.

Other activities included - inauguration of a picture gallery at Gunfoundry Branch, donating a Maruti Eco vehicle to the Association for Urban and rural Needy (ARUN) of Rainbow Homes NGO, Hyderabad, under the Community Services Banking initiative of SBI.

Shri Praveen Kumar Gupta, Managing Director (Retail & Digital Banking), SBI, Corporate Centre participated in the celebratory activities.

Post Script

I was posted at Hyderabad Circle of the State Bank of India (2004-2007) and headed two branches - Old MLA Quarters and HAL Hyderabad Branch, while my wife Sumita was posted at State Bank Institute of Information and Communication Management (SBIICM) during the same period.

We have very fond memories of our stay in Hyderabad, the friendly SBI Branch Chiefs, the staff, the glorious history of Hyderabad (the Charminar Heritage walks, the Rock Walks, the Bird Watching Society of Andhra Pradesh (BSAP),  and the Golkonda Fort, Qutub Shahi tombs, the Hussain Sagar Lake, the Durgam Cheruvu, the Necklace Road, the KBR and Vengala Rao Parks where we used to go for our morning walks, the Light & Sound shows, the IMAX theatre etc are all very fresh and indelible in our mind.
