The "American Innovation $1 Coin Programme" is designed to highlight creativity and resourcefulness and encourages each State or Territory to define its place in the country's history of innovation.
Under the Coin programme, each of these States or Territories is required to identify concepts emblematic of an innovation, an innovator, or a group of innovators unique to that location and significant to the country's progress.
The final designs to be struck on the State or Territory's representative coins will be decided by the Secretary of the Treasury.

The "American Innovation $1 Coin Programme" is a multi-year coin series designed to honour innovation and innovators by issuing $1 coins for each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia and the five US Territories - Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands.
A coin is issued for each of the States, coins will be released for the District of Columbia and the Territories.
Four new $1 coins with distinctive Reverse designs will be released each year from 2019 through 2032 (a 15-year initiative) in the order in which the States ratified the Constitution of the USA or were admitted to the Union.
The first release in this coin Series which will be the cornerstone for this new collection is scheduled to go on sale on 14.12.2018.

The introductory 2018 coin commemorates the first patent approved by George Washington in 1790 - issued to Samuel Hopkins for his process of making potash, an ingredient in fertilizer.
The 2019 issues will highlight Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Georgia during the second half of 2019.
The 2018 Coin:
A special American Innovation $1 Coin is being minted to be issued in 2018. The 2018 designs reflect those recommended by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

For collectors, the coins are also being issued in Proof, Uncirculated and Circulation Coin Quality finish by the Denver and Philadelphia Mints and as a single Proof Coin struck at the San Francisco Mint.

In addition, these coins are being retailed in 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags separately by the Denver and Philadelphia Mints.
The stylised gears represent industry and innovation. The design also includes the inscription "SIGNED FIRST PATENT" under Washington's signature.
The inscription is "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" (which will be also seen on all the coins issued under this programme).
The Reverse design was made by Donna Weaver and sculpted/engraved by Renata Gordon.
On the Edge of the coin is incused with the year of minting (or issuance), the mint mark and the motto "E.PLURIBUS UNUM" - (meaning - "One Out Of Many").
The Obverse of the American Innovation $1 Coin depicts the same common Obverse deign as in all the coins being issued in the Series. There is a representation of the Statue of Liberty and the inscriptions are - "$1" and "IN GOD WE TRUST".
On the Edge of the coin is incused with the year of minting (or issuance), the mint mark and the motto "E.PLURIBUS UNUM" - (meaning - "One Out Of Many").
The image of the Statue of Liberty is in accordance with the mandate under the authorising legislation, Public Law 115-197.
The common Obverse was designed by Justin Kunz and sculpted/engraved by Phebe Hemphill.
