Excerpted from the Introduction:

"After Independence, the medium of postage stamps was initially used to highlight the country's achievements in science and technology, as well as, its socio-economic development.

Subsequently, the country's rich cultural and natural heritage came to be showcased and many beautiful stamps were issued on Trees.

Man belongs the Earth, which has unstintingly given myriad gifts to him. One of the gifts it has entrusted to man's care is trees. In the Indian sub-continent with its varying climatic zones, there are so many trees, both indigenous and exotic, with flowers of myriad colours and shapes that can transform the landscape. These are not mere objects of visual delight, but also play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance in nature. With clockwork precision, trees - the Sentinels of Nature, notice the change of seasons, come to flower, bear fruit and set seed.

Nature's most efficient producers of biomass, their green leaves absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release life-giving oxygen. A tree is a natural air conditioner. It also helps reduce ozone levels in urban areas. Its roots perform an important function as soil binders. On hillsides or stream slopes, trees slow run-off and hold soil in place. Trees provide important habitats for numerous bird, insect and animal species. They provide nourishment and are also a constant source of medicine for the human race. 

In sub-urban and rural areas, trees can be selectively harvested for fuel and craft wood. So many trees - Deciduous Trees, Evergreen Trees, Woods Landscaping Trees, Fruit & Nut Trees, Forests and their conservation etc. are commemorated on Indian postage stamps".

 This booklet traces the evolution of the stamps released by India Post covering Trees under various heads from 1954 onwards. The following presentation covers 12 stamps - the first image is a representation of how the stamps photos are placed in the booklet, while the second image is of actual stamps issued by India Post, some of which are in my Philatelic Collection:

1) 46th World Forestry Congress, Dehradun:

This stamp of 2 Annas was issued to commemorate the "Chauthi Vishwa Van Vigyan Congress, Dehradun" (in Hindi) or the  "4th World Forestry Congress" (in English) held at the Forest Research Institute, (FRI) Dehradun in December 1954.

This stamp features a view of the Forest Research Institute.

The above Special Postal Cover (from my Philatelic Collection) was issued during the 19th Commonwealth Forestry Conference held at the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun from 03-07  April 2017

This is a photograph of me visiting the FRI. I had stood before this tree cross-section during the 1970s. It was an old memory which was rekindled durin our last visit to the FRI in 2009.

2) "Forest Centenary" - (1861-1961):

This Postage stamp of 15 N.P. (Naye Paise) was issued by India Post on 21.11.1961 to commemorate the "Forest Centenary (1861-1961)". Notice that this stamp is inscribed only in English, which is the subsidiary official language of India.

"The stamp commemorated the 100 years of Scientific Forestry in India. The seventh decade of the 19th Century saw the formulation of a scientific forest policy and since then legislation, demarcation and conservation have made great strides". 

 The motif of the stamp shows a view of the forest growing against an ice-clad mountain range and a river flowing nearby.

 Fact File: How many of us know that the "International Day of Forests" or "World Forestry Day" is celebrated on 21st March every year, as proposed by the Conference of States Members of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and approved by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in its meeting held on 28.11.2012.

 Nature Research: 
3) Coconut Research (Cocos nucifera):

This postage stamp of 25 Paise was brought out by India Post on 27.12.1976 to commemorate  the Diamond Jubilee of "Coconut Research" (1916-1976) in India.

 " The Coconut tree is a member of the family Arecaceae (Palm family) and the only species of the genus Cocos. Every part of the coconut tree, rightly termed the "Kalpavriksha" by the literary classics of India, finds a variety of uses for mankind. 

 The oil and milk derived from it are commonly used in cooking and frying, as well as, in soaps and cosmetics. The husks and leaves can be used as material to make a variety of products for furnishing and decorating.

 The coconut tree also has cultural and religious significance in certain societies, particularly in India, where it is used in Religious rituals. In Kerala, where literally means the "land of the coconuts", a large percentage of the population is dependent on coconut for their livelihood. India was the first country to take up Systematic Research on coconut."
This is a Miniature Sheet (MS) of two stamps  of 1500 Paise (or Rs.15/-) and 500 Paise (or Rs.5/-) brought out by India Post (from my Philatelic Collection) on 08.01.2008

 It  commemorates 100 Years of Coconut Research in India (1916 - 2016) at the ICAR - Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CPRCRI), Kasargod in India.

Flowering Trees:
4) Rhododendron ("Rhododendron arboretum Smith"):

An image of the 50 Paise stamp brought out by India Post on 01.07.2017 depicts the Rhododendron flower.

 "More than 110 species of Rhododendron are found in the wild in India, particularly in the Himalayan region. 

 An evergreen tree, Rhododendron arboretum attains a height of 14.0 metres in the Himalayan belt at altitudes of 1,200-4,000 metres. The leaves are robust, lanceolate, 10-20 centimetres long, shiny above and silvery beneath. The flowering season is from January to April. The bell-shaped flowers, up to 20 in dense showy trusses, are normally deep-red, with black flecks. Many other tints, including pink and white, sometimes spotted, are also known".

5) Kadamba (Anthocepholus chinensis (ex Lamarck) Richard  ex Walpers):

"The Kadamba, a tree associated with the childhood of Lord Krishna, is one of India's most ancient shade-giving ornamentals.

 An occasional specimen of this magnificent tree scattered between Mathura and Bharatpur is all that is left of the vast Kadamba forests that once thrived in the Brindavan Region.

 A tall, deciduous tree, the Kadamba has a clean cylindrical stem, horizontal branches and glossy ovate-oblong leaves, often 30.0 centimetres long and 15.0 centimetres wide. The many small, scented, cream-orange flowers are combined in compact spherical heads of the size of golf balls. They come in great profusion in August."

  Nature Research:
6) Conservation of Forests & 7) Afforestation: 

A 100 Paise (or Re 1/) stamp issued by India Post on 15.06.1981, titled "Van Parirakshan" (in Hindi) and "Conservation of Forests" shows stylised trees.
"Environmental Conservation involves protection, as well as, enhancement of the quality of our natural environment. Natural resources are the basic building blocks for national development. 

 The air, water, soil, flora and fauna have to be used with care and wisdom to sustain development and to provide for improved quality of life for the people.

 India is one of the few countries to have specifically referred to the need for environmental protection in its Constitution. 

 This stamp issue highlights the need for conservation of forests which form an integral and significant component of environmental conservation.

 7) Afforestation: Definitive Stamp issued on 24.02.1984: is shown on the top image on the picture taken from the booklet and depicts a lush green forest due to Afforestation efforts.

 Flowering Trees:
8) Flame-of-the-forest [Butea monosperma(Lamarck) Taubert]:

A set of two stamps in my Philatelic Collection, when I was studying in the Law Faculty in Canning College (Lucknow University) in 1981. as I was still studying and not earning, I did not have enough money to buy a Block of four stamps

 "A slow growing tree seldom reaching a height of 15 metres, the frost-hardy, drought resistant Flame-of-the-forest occurs throughout India and is considered useful for reclaiming saline lands. 

 By February, it sheds its trifoliate, hard, leathery leaves. It announces the advent of hot weather by bursting into a blaze of flowers, produced on great, stiff clusters. The flame-orange, red or vermillion petals are covered with soft hair that glimmer in sunlight, contrasting vividly with the jet-black or bottle-green velvety sepals. 

 One of the few hosts on which the lac insect can be reared, it also yields a ruby-coloured gum used in tanning leather. The seed is valued as an anthelminthic."

Flowering Trees:
9) Golden Shower (Cassia fistula Linnaeus):

This stamp issued by India Post on 01.09.1981, is of 100 Paise (or Re.1/-) and depicts the "Amaltaas" (in Hindi) and "Golden Shower" (in English)  flowers and the 2000 Paise (or Rs.20/-) Definitive Stamp issued by India Post on 20.11.2000

"When most flowers are past their spring-time best, the Golden Shower decides to brighten up the summer morning. It does so by displaying a profusion of 5-petalled golden or sulphur-yellow fragrant flowers, hanging gaily on delicate, thread-like pedicels. 

 Draped in streaming clusters of golden sprays, the tree is a striking beauty from April to June. Though never entirely leafless, the deciduous Golden Shower sheds most of its leaves between March and May. The newly formed foliage has a rich copper or chocolate colour.

 A charming, slow-growing, about 9.0 metres high tree with a spreading, open crown, it produces durable wood used for making agricultural implements, carts and grain-pounders.

 10) "Amaltaas" (Golden Shower): A Definitive stamp of 2000 Paise (or Rs.20/-) was also issued on 20.11.2000 and features in the booklet.

 Flowering Trees:
11) Crateva (Crateva nurvala Buchanan-Hamilton):


This 50 Paise Stamp was issued by India Post on 01.09.1981 and depicts the "Verna" (in Hindi) and Crateva" (in English) flowering tree.

"A moderate-sized tree attaining a height of over 10.0 metres, it is named after Cratevas (Krateuas), a Greek naturalist and physician of the 1st Century BC.

  Common throughout India, the much-branched tree with a head of glossy trifoliate leaves looks very majestic when in full bloom from March to May (even earlier in the South).

 The beauty of the flowers is enhanced by a burst of prominent purplish-violet stamens that contrast well with white lilac tipped petals that slowly turn yellow. 

 The bark of the tree is used as a demulcent, anti-pyretic, sedative, alterative and tonic".

 12) Flowering Trees:
Bauhinia (Bauhinia variegate Linnaeus):


This is a 200 Paise (or Rs.2/-) stamp issued by India Post on 01.09.1981. It is titled "Kachnar" (in Hindi)and "Bauhinia" (in English).

" Stocky and medium sized, with smooth trunk and thick foliage Bauhinia is a beautiful ornamental tree that produces showy, fragrant flowers in a range of colours - lavender, pink, mauve and purple with mottles, splashes and streaks of white and crimson. 

 There is another variety with porcelain-white flowers, often with a mother-of-pearl gleam.

 Bauhinia variegate is often confused with the purple Bauhinia (Bauhinia purpurea Linnaeus) which also produces variegated, though not white, flowers. The time of flowering is a distinguishing feature between the two - Bauhinia Variegata is in bloom in spring while Bauhinia perperea comes to flower in autumn.

      This booklet was brought out on my suggestion to India Post , Anoopda. I suggested to the philatelic museum, New Delhi/epostoffice that they should trace the stamps brought out after independence under various heads - temples, freedom fighters, important events and the environment, beaches, etc.
