1) Planet Earth: The World's first "Tri-material" Coin - with an outer ring, inner core and an embossable blue polymer ring: An innovative 5 Euro Polymer coin issued by the Federal Republic of Germany in 2016

On 09.11.2016, the Federal Republic of Germany planned to mint a 5 Euro Collector's coin with the theme "Sub-tropical Climate Zone" with an orange polymer ring to be issued in April 2018. This coin is the second in a five-part "Climates Zones of the Earth" Coin Series, with one coin being issued every year from 2017 to 2021. The  first 5 Euro Collector's coin with the theme "Tropical Climate Zone" was issued on 27.04.2017, under this Coin Series.

Like the first coin in this innovative Coin Series, this coin too is linked to the very first innovative 5 Euro Coin "Planet Earth", (which marked a global premier with its translucent, coloured polymer ring in 2016).

The five coin series includes:

2017 "Tropical Climate Zone" - Red Polymer ring

2018 " Sub-tropical Climate Zone - Orange "  "

2019 " Temperate Climate Zone" - Green   "  "

2020 "Sub-polar Climate Zone" - Turquoise "   "

2021 " Polar Climate Zone" - Violet           "    "

As with the earlier coin, this 5 Euro Polymer Coin consists of three components - outer/external metallic ring, an inner metallic core and an embossable orange polymer ring.

The Obverse and Reverse of the "Tri-material" Sub-tropical Coin

The Orange ring is partially translucent and is permeable to light. The ring has beeninserted between the metal components and forms a permanent bond. At the same time, the ring evokes the coin's motif "SUBTROPISCHE ZONE" ("Sub-tropical Climate Zone") on the lower periphery in a striking way.

The Obverse of the 5 Euro coin shows a depiction of the Sub-tropics with their wet winters and Mediterranean climate. The flora and fauna typically found in this climate zone, like domesticated goats and the shrub-land which is shaped by their activities are convincingly shown.

The orange ring surrounds a typical Mediterranean pasture with a view of the coast-line and the sea. The centrally positioned tree represents the many "umbrella-crowned" species prevalent in this climate zone.

The Reverse of the 5 Euro Coin shows the German Eagle emblem, the country name "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" (in German) on the lower periphery, face value "5 EURO" on the upper periphery, the 12 stars of the European Union (EU), representing the countries which had initially joined the EU and the year of issue "2018" below the Eagle emblem.

The coin is legal tender in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The specifications of this coin are:

Year of issue: 2018; Coin Quality: Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof; Metal composition: Copper, Nickel, Polymer; Diameter/Size: 27.25 mm; Weight: 9.00 grams; Minted By and Mint Mark: Berlin (A), Munich (D), Stuttgart (F), Karlsruhe (G), Hanburg (J).
