The "Gates of Jerusalem Coin Series" is struck in Gold and Silver in strictly limited mintages, which takes us on an amazing tour of the Walls of Jerusalem, over thousands of years of history.
The Walls around the Old City of Jerusalem were built in the 16th Century by the Sultan of Turkey, known as Suleiman the Magnificent.
Eight Gates were constructed within the walls:
There are eight gates within the walls of Jerusalem. The gates are open and serve as passageways to the sacred and historic sites and markets of the city, with the exception of the Golden Gate or Mercy Gate, as it is known, which remains closed. It is said that this gate will be opened miraculously, when the Messaih comes and the dead are resurrected.
About the Lion's Gate:
Lion's Gate is one of the eight gates in the Walls of the Old city of Jerusalem. It is situated in the Eastern Wall, close to the Moslem Quarter, facing the Mount of Olives. Also in the Eastern Wall is the Golden Gate which remains closed.
Lion's Gate is so called, because of the two sculpted lions that decorate either side of the Gateway. It is said that at the time of Ottoman Rule in the Land of Israel, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent requested that the lions be sculpted, following his dream in which he was warned that if he did not defend Jerusalem by building a wall around the city, he would be devoured by lions. Accordingly, he built the Lions Gate in 1538-39.
Among other names, Lion's Gate is also known as "Jehoshaphat Gate", as it faces the Valley of Jehoshaphat, the Kidron Valley.
The Paratroop Brigade of the Israel Defence Forces entered the Old city of Jerusalem through Lion's Gate, when they liberated the Western wall in the Six-Day War fought between 5-10.06.1067 between Egypt, Jordan, Syria (forming the United Arab Republic) and Israel.
On the Obverse of this Gold Coin is seen the Lion's Gate.
