About the History Museum of Armenia:
On 09.09.1919, the History Museum of Armenia was set up by the Parliament Law No. 439. It was then called the Ethnographic - Anthropological Museum - Library.
On 20.08.1921, the Museum started receiving visitors.
Thereafter, the Museum underwent a series of name changes - "State Central Museum of Armenia" (1922), "Cultural-Historical Museum" (1931), "Historical Museum" (1935), "State History Museum of Armenia" (1962) and finally "History Museum of Armenia" (2003).
The museum was formed on the basis of the collections of the Armenian Ethnographical Association of the Caucasus, Nor Nakhidjevan Museum of Armenian Antiquities, Museum of Antiquities of Ani, Vagharshapat Repository ofAncient Manuscripts (15,289 objects).
In 1935, based on the collections of this museum, separate museums were established:
a) The Museum of Art of the Armenian SSR (the present day National Gallery of Armenia) - 1660 objects were sent to this Museum.
b) The present day Charents Museum of Literature and Art - 301 objects and 1298 manuscripts were sent to this Museum.
In 1978, the State Museum of Ethnography received 1428 objects and 584 photographs.
The Museum presently has over 400,000 objects which are distributed into the following sections - Archaeology (35% of the main collection), Ethnography (8%), Numismatics (45%) and documents (12%).
In 1935, based on the collections of this museum, separate museums were established:
a) The Museum of Art of the Armenian SSR (the present day National Gallery of Armenia) - 1660 objects were sent to this Museum.
b) The present day Charents Museum of Literature and Art - 301 objects and 1298 manuscripts were sent to this Museum.
In 1978, the State Museum of Ethnography received 1428 objects and 584 photographs.
The Museum presently has over 400,000 objects which are distributed into the following sections - Archaeology (35% of the main collection), Ethnography (8%), Numismatics (45%) and documents (12%).
The Museum replenishes its collections through finds from excavations at archaeological sites in Armenia, or by purchases and donations.
The Museum represents an integral picture of the history and culture of Armenia from pre-historic times (over one million years ago, till the present day). It presents the rare traces of cultural inter-relations with the countries of the Ancient East - Egypt, Mitany, the Hittite Kingdom, Assyria, Persia, the Seleucid State, Rome and the Byzantine Empire in the Armenian Highland.
The Museum owns an enormous and exceptional collection of bronze specimens of the 3rd-2nd millennia BC, which belong to the world treasury of masterpieces.
The Museum possesses the historical - cultural heritage of Urartu, the powerful Armenian State in the Ancient East - exceptional cuneiform inscriptions, bronze statuettes, wall paintings, painted ceramics, arms and weapons with sculptural ornamentation, unique specimens of gold, silver and bone, excavated from Karmir Blour, Arin-Berd and Argishtikhinili.
The Museum possesses, the cuneiform inscriptions of 782 BC about the foundation of the city of Erebuni (Yerevan) by the Urartian king Argishti Iowns, a collection of the most ancient evidence of the history of transport, 15th-14th Century BC wooden carts and chariots, excavated from Lchashen and their miniature models in bronze.
The Museum owns a rich collection of Armenian coins, consisting of coins of Tsopk, Artaxiad dynasty, Kiurike kingdom and Armenian kingdom of Cilicia and foreign issues of mints like Dvin, Ani, Yeravan etal), functioning in Armenia in different periods.
The Museum presents valuable specimens of a peculiar transformation of the Hellenistic culture in Armenia - sculptures, architectural details, jewellery and pottery, excavated from the archaeological sites of Garni, Artashat and Oshakan.
The Museum has published works on Armenian architecture, archaeology, ethnography, history, series and reports on archaeological excavations since 1948. The Museum carries out educational and scientific programmes on Armenian history and culture as well.
The Mission:
"The Mission of the History Museum of Armenia is to preserve, replenish, study and publicise the Museum objects and collections, which represent the history and culture of Armenia and the Armenian people."
