ii) A Combo Presentation Pack from India Post containing 1 Miniature Sheet, 1 First Day Cover (FDC), 1 Brochure, 1 Commemorative Coin issued by SPMCIL and 1 booklet issued by the Ministry of Culture: Issue Date 2019:
The India Government Mint, Mumbai has issued a Silver Coin in the denomination of Rupees 150.00, on behalf of the Reserve Bank of India, as part of the 150th Anniversary Celebrations of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (popularly known as "Mahatma Gandhi" ("great or venerable soul" all over India and abroad).
Mahatma Gandhi's method of peaceful protests "Satyagrah" (Insistence of a right, through peaceful demonstrations/gatherings"), caught the imagination of the Indian public fighting for its independence from the "British Raj" yoke and economic exploitation among other atrocities. His Quit India Movement begun in 1942, in which he gave the "mantra" - "Do or Die" - which resulted in India gaining its Independence on 15.08.1947.
A Brief:
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 02.10.1869 in a coastal town in the Indian State of Gujarat as part of a business/merchant class family ("Bania"). His father Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi (1822-1885) served as the "Diwan" (Chief Minister) of Porbandar State.
As was the custom of the day, 13-year old Mohandas was married to 14-year old Kasturbai Makhanji Kapadia (1868-1944) in an arranged marriage in 05/1883. They remained separated, though, for thye next three years. Leaving his young wife and new-born son Harilal (born in 1888), the young Mohandas studied Law in London, where he was called to the Bar and became a practicing attorney at the age of 22.
By 1893, Mohandas moved to Cape Town, South Africa, to represent an Indian merchant in a law-suit and where his other three sons were born. Here, Gandhi became involved in non-violent resistance in a campaign for civil rights. The discriminative policies of the Apartheid government in terms of race in South Africa had a profound effect on him and led him to become more involved in civil rights.
In 1915, Gandhiji and his family returned to India, where he joined the Indian National Congress Party (INC) that espoused Independence for India from the "British Raj". He became one of the prominent leaders of the INC by 1920.
On 26.01.1930, the INC declared the independence of India and raised the Indian Flag. The British Raj did not recognise this Declaration of Independence, but could not prevent the INC responding to Gandhiji's call and intensified the peaceful agitations/gatherings/Independence Movement.
In the late 1930s, the INC played a prominent role in Provincial Government.
In 1939, a pivotal stance was taken, when Gandhiji and the INC withdrew support from the British Raj, when the viceroy declared war on Germany in 09/1939 and pledged the support of Indian men and materials, without consulting the Indian leaders.
In 1942, in the face of impending action and the involvement of India in World War II, Gandhiji initiated the "Quit India" Movement, which was responded to by every Indian and led to thousands of citizens being imprisoned in overcrowded prisons, including Mahatma Gandhi.
Nevertheless, the Muslim League, which was only interested in the Muslim population within India co-operated with the British Raj, against strong opposition from Mahatma Gandhi. At this time, the Muslim League also petitioned for a separate Muslim State, which subsequently emerged as the "Islamic State of Pakistan" in 1947, when the British partitioned India into two countries, on terms that Gandhiji disapproved of.
On 30.01.1948, Gandhiji, known world-wide for his stance on non-violent protest and passive resistance ("Satyagrah") fell to an assassin's bullets shot at close range by a pistol. The "Father of the Nation" passed away about 30 minutes later at Birla House, his residence. He was cremated in accordance with Hindu religious customs and his ashes distributed in urns and sent all over India.
A short distance from my residence in Pune, is the Aga Khan Palace (AKP), where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned during the 1942 Quit India Movement. The "Samadhi" (Memorial) of his wife Kasturba has been built here, as she had passed away in Pune and her last rites were performed at the AKP. A memorial also stands to Mahatma Gandhi in the AKP where an urn carrying his ashes has been kept.
The Commemorative Coin:
The above is a stylised representation of the Mahatma Gandhi 150 Years logo, which shows an aged Mahatma Gandhi, walking with the support of a waking stick, which transforms into the numeral "1" in the "150 Years of Celebrating the Mahatma" logo, in which the numeral "0" is represented with the "Charkha" (or traditional "spinning wheel"), which was Gandhiji's favourite pastime. He always wore "Khadi" clothes after his return to India in 1915 on seeing the poverty stricken Indian farmers and labourers and forsake British/European origin clothes and the "Charkha" became the symbol of making Indians self-reliant by making their own clothes. Gandhiji believed that every indigenous cloth spun/worn "drove a nail in the coffin of the British Raj" as it would strike at the heart of the British Raj economy.
At right is seen the Reverse of the Rupees 150.00 Silver Coin being brought out by the IGM Mumbai, booking for which are still open.
The Reverse of the Silver Rupees 150.00 Coin is titled on the upper periphery " 150th ANNIVERSARY OF MAHATMA GANDHI - 1869-2019" (spelt in both Hindi and English) and shows the logo of the celebrations described above.
On the lower half of the Coin design is inscribed "150 YEARS OF CELEBRATING THE MAHATMA" (in English).
On the lower periphery is seen the letter "M", the Mumbai Mint Mark reserved for Proof Coins only. Uncirculated Quality Coins carry the usual "Diamond" Mint mark of the Mumbai Mint.
On the Obverse of the Silver Rupees 150.00 Coin is seen the three Lion Capitol of Ancient India's Samrat (Emperor) Ashok the Great, which has been adopted by the Government of India as its emblem., which also carries the slogan "Satyamev Jayate" (in Hindi) - meaning "Truth will always Prevail".
