1101) 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi: A set of six octagonal stamps of 2500 Paise (or Rs.25/-) each, issued by India Post on 02.10.2019: Octagonal stamps have been issued for the first time by India Post:

02.10.1869 is a red-letter day in the history of India, as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on this day into a Modh Baniya (trader/businessman) family as the last child of his parents - Karamchand and Putlibai, at Porbandar in the present day Indian state of Gujarat.

The Indian classics, especially the stories of Shravana and King Harishchandra had a great impact on him. The virtues o penance, patience and discipline were passed onto Mohandas by his mother.

In 05/1883, Mohandas was married to Kasturbai Makhanji Kapadia in an arranged marriage, according to the local customs. They had four children - all of them boys.

In 11/1887, the 18-year old Gandhi graduated from High School, in Almedabad. The next year, he enroled at Samaldas College in Bhavnagar State, then the sole degree-granting institution of higher education in the region. However, Mohandas dropped out and returned to his family in Porbandar.

Gandhi was keen to study Law at London. After much persuasion, his mother finally let him go, but only after he had made a vow of abstinence from meat, alcohol and women.

Studying law and jurisprudence in London:

In 1888, he sailed to England and attended University College, London (UCL), which is a constituent college of University of London. At UCL, he studied law and jurisprudence and was invited to enroll at Inner Temple with the intention of becoming a barrister. His time in London was influenced with the vow he had made to his mother. He became active member of the London Vegetarian Society (LVS).

He was called to the Bar in 06/1891 after which left London for India. His attempts at establishing a law practice in Bombay (present day Mumbai) failed.

Leaving for South Africa on a legal assignment:

In 1893, a Muslim merchant in Kathiawar offered him a lawyer's assignment in South Africa.

He arrived in South Africa , in the same year, where he spent 21 years during which time, he developed his political views, ethics and politics. Gandhi faced discrimination because of his skin colour - he was not allowed to sit with European passengers in the stagecoach; he was thrown off a train at Pietermaritzburg after refusing to leave the first class compartment, for which he had purchased a proper ticket.

In 1894, the Abdullah case that had brought him to South Africa was concluded, however, he decided to stay on and helped found the Natal Indian Congress, through which, he moulded the Indian community of South Africa into a unified politicl force.

In 1906, the Transvaal government promulgated a new Act compelling registration of the colony's Indian and Chinese populations. At a mass protest meeting held in Johannesburg on 11.09.1906, he adopted his still evolving methodology of "Satyagrah" (insistence of a right being recognised through peaceful means/protests) or "non-violence" for the first time.

Return to India at the invitation of freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gokhale:

In 1915, at the request of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, he returned to India and brought with him an international reputation as a leading Indian nationalist, theorist and community organiser.

In India, he soon joined the Indian National Congress (INC).

In 1917, Gandhiji's first major achievement came with the Champaran agitation in Bihar. The peasantry was forced to grow indigo, a cash crop whose demand had been declining over two decades and the farmers were forced to sell their crops to the European planters at a fixed price, which was ridiculously low, through middlemen appointed for the purpose by the Europeans.

Gandhiji pursued a strategy of non-violent protest/agitation - "Satyagrah" (for the first time in India), took the administration and the British Raj courts by surprise and won major concessions from the authorities.

In 1918, Kheda was hit by floods and famine and the local farmers were demanding relief from taxes. Gandhiji initiated a signature campaign where farmers pledged non-payment of revenue, even under the threat of confiscation of  their lands.

In 1919, the British Raj administration passed the Rowlatt Act. Gandhiji opposed this vehemently. "Satyagrah" was organised at many places, with people assembling to protest peacefully.

On 30.03.1919, the British Law officers opened fire on an assembly of unarmed people, peacefully gathered, participating in the "Satyagrah" in Delhi. This led to rioting in retaliation. Many persons, including Gandhiji were arrested. Along with the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Indian public was inflamed against the British Raj and there was mass public anger, a kind which had not been witnessed before.

In 1920, Gandhiji took leadership of the INC and began to escalate demands.

On 31.12.1929, the Flag of India was unfurled at Lahore.

On 26.01.1930, the INC celebrate India's Independence Day in Lahore.

Gandhiji then launched the Salt Satyagrah in 03/1930. He undertook the famous Salt March from Ahmedabad to Dandi on 12.03.1930 to 06.04.1930, in which, together with 78 participants, he marched 388 kilometres, to make salt himself, with the declared intention of breaking the Salt law.

In the late 1930s, he led the INC to withdraw their support to the British Raj, when the then Viceroy declared war on Germany in 09/1939, without consultation and pledged India's resources - men and materials - to the Allied War effort.

Tensions escalated and in 1942, Gandhiji declared the Quit India Movement and demanded the British Raj to immediately leave India. Thousands of Indians, including Gandhiji were imprisoned by the Raj.

The Muslim League, on the other hand, cooperated with the British government and demanded a totally separate Muslim state of Pakistan.

In 08/1947, the British Raj partitioned the country into two nations - when Nehru and Jinnah reached an agreement during discussions in Shimla, in the Indian State of Himachal Pradesh. This partition was against the wishes of Gandhiji and many other Indian leaders.

In 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse and his funeral procession was attended by over 2.0 million persons from all over the world.

Mahatma Gandhi's legacy:

Mahatma Gandhi's invaluable legacy, besides his contribution to the National Movement, was the upliftment of the lower castes/depressed classes - he coined the term "harijan" (meaning "God's people") for them. His work in this field, later led to the banning of "untouchability" in the Indian Constitution.

Three Wise Monkeys representing the principles of "See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Speak No Evil" epitomise Gandhian principles of truth and non-violence.

According to him, if good speech and action are practised, hatred and violence shall vanish leading to a more peaceful world.

The Swadeshi Movement of the 1920s and 1930s resulted in Indians taking pride in indigenously made  goods and Khadi emerging as the national fabric of India.

Gandhiji set an example which other world leaders followed - Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi to name a few, who all drew inspiration and motivation from his principles and strategies of non-violent transformation. "Be the change you wish to see in the world" - sums up his legacy.

The British Empire over which the "Sun Never Set" at one time, is now reduced to a few islands, with other British colonies/nations also fighting for their Independence from the British, on seeing the Indian example and Gandhiji's success through "Satyagrah"  - British Overseas Territories (BOTs) as they are now called.

Britain is now headed on  a crash-course with the European Union too, with "BREXIT" looming large on 31.10.2019, and the British Isles is in danger of disintegrating further.

Swachh Bharat Mission (conceived on Mahatma Gandhi's ideals of sanitation):

The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched by the Indian Government  on 02.10.2014 with the objective of achieving an open defecation free (ODF) India by 02.10.2019 (Mahatma Gandhi's 150th Birth Anniversary). The Mission reports that over 99% of 100,00,000 (10 crore) toilets have been built in around 599963 villages, 699 districts and 35 States and Union Territories have since been declared ODF.

A massive behavioral change has been brought about in the citizens and strengthened delivery mechanisms at all levels. Not only ODF, awareness has been created all over India about keeping their localities clean and not to dump garbage in the open. There is awareness on a mass scale now to do away with single-use plastics and to use cloth bags etc. It is heartening to note that school kids and youngsters are participating in the cleanliness drive.

The design of the First Day Cover recognises the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission and the relentless efforts of everyone who has contributed to achieving Mahatma Gandhi's ideals of sanitation.

The Commemorative Stamps:
