The Mint of Austria has begun a new 100 Euro "Magic of Gold Coin Series" under which, the Mint will release six gold coins which will explore the allure and magic of gold, which since time immemorial has had the unique effect on everyone that beholds it.


No other metal has as much symbolic meaning as gold and no other concrete substance has been linked to so many abstract concepts, including heavenly blessings, immortality, purity and power.

 This Coin Series will trace that meaning through different ancient cultures. The different cultures which will feature on these coins include - Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, the Incas, the Scythians, India and China.

All six coins in the "Magic of Gold Coin Series" will feature ancient art treasures and the word "gold" is engraved on each of them in the respective script of the culture they explore.

Mesopotamia:
The Obverse and Reverse of the first 100 Euro Gold Coin in the Magic of Gold Coin Series, features the culture of Mesopotamia and showcases King Nebuchadnezzar II on the Obverse and a horned bull on the Reverse

The first of those cultures is Mesopotamia -  "the land between two rivers" - the Tigris and the Euphrates, where some of the most important developments in early human history occurred.

The Gold of Mesopotamia Coin features a portrait of the legendary ruler King Nebuchadnezzar II (640 B.C. - 562 B.C.) wearing a horned crown. 

According to the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament, Nebuchadnezzar II erected a huge golden statue and made his subjects worship it on bended knee. As elsewhere, in Mesopotamia, the ownership of gold was associated with high standing. It was reserved for the powerful and all gold had to be handed over to the ruling class and the religious authorities.

Mesopotamia's gold was mainly sourced from Egypt, where it was believed that the streets were paved with the precious metal.
The Obverse of the 100 Euro Gold Coin depicts King Nebuchadnezzar II of Mesopotamia. On the upper periphery is mentioned the name of the country of issue - "REPUBLIK OSTERREICH" (meaning "Republic of Austria"). below which is the denomination of the coin "100 EURO". Towards the lower bottom is mentioned "Gold" in the local language.
The Reverse of the 100 Euro Gold Coin shows a bull's head from a detail found on the Golden Lyre of Ur, which was discovered in 1929 in the Royal Cemetery of Ur, located in present day Iraq.

Created some 4,500 years ago, the lyre is considered to be one of the oldest surviving stringed instruments.

Each Proof Coin is presented in a case, complete with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity (COA) and protective slip-case.
The elegant box in which all the six coins issued in the Series can be placed/housed.
